Scottie Scheffler, Amanda Balionis Interview Gets Off to Rough Start
Scottie Scheffler entered the PGA Championship as the betting favorite and showed why during the third round on May 17. After finishing solo-fourth at the Masters in April, Scheffler entered the weekend two shots back of the leader Jhonnatan Vegas. He carded a bogey to start the round, which mimed a rollercoaster until his final five holes, which he played in 5-under to give him a 6-under round of 65 and a three-shot lead over Alex Noren. Advertisement Following the round he sat down with CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis. The interview got off to an inauspicious start when Scheffler sneezed and started coughing immediately after Balionis attempted to ask him a question. "You know I bogeyed the first, I actually thought I hit two pretty good shots in the air. I just battled really hard today. It was tough out there, those greens were really firming up and the wind was really gusty today - I think that was the most challenging part. The greens were firming up as well, but overall did a really good job of staying patient and hit some nice shots." The world No. 1 was later asked about the emotion he showed after birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to close out the round and give himself a three-shot lead heading into Sunday. "Well I guess the qualifier there would be 'big emotion' for me," he said with a laugh. "No, I think it was an important time in the round, you know, I wanted to finish out the round the right way and I was able to gain some momentum there with the eagle on No. 14 and [birdie on] No. 15 and hit some good shots down the stretch. It was nice to be able to take advantage of some good shots." Advertisement In a follow-up, Balionis asked the two-time major winner what it would take to earn his first non-Masters major. "Just more good golf," he said plainly. "Continue to do what I'm doing - staying in the present. Do what I can do. I have some great players chasing me on the leaderboard and it's going to take another really good round." The golf world love the moment between the two after Scheffler's impressive round of golf. "AB is the best. Perfect for a Major," one person said of Balionis. "Easy to get nervous around a Bourbon legend," joked bourbon brand Elijah Craig, of which Balionis has a partnership. Advertisement "Cool as a cucumber. The professional," added a third. Scheffler and Noren will be back out on the course at 2:40 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon. Rory McIlroy snubbed by Amanda Balionis in surprise US Open prediction
Rory McIlroy will be on the hunt for more major success at the US Open this week but CBS star Amanda Balionis has made a surprise tip to find glory in Pennsylvania Amanda Balionis has tipped Sam Burns for success in the US Open later this week, even with competition to come from the likes of Scott Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. The CBS Sports reporter has been said to have a close relationship with McIlroy but it did not prevent her from looking elsewhere for a shout at who could earn glory. And it is Burns who has received her backing following his tense play-off defeat at the Canadian Open on Sunday. The 28-year-old American put in a stunning final round to record an eight-under-par 62 before New Zealand's Ryan Fox matched his 18-under-par score to force a play-off. It took a further four holes to separate the pair with Fox earning a birdie to secure victory. But the outing still shows that Burns is ready to be competitive. At least, CBS star Balionis was convinced enough by his performance. Burns, ranked 22nd in the world, made seven consecutive cuts and finished in the top five twice in the run up to making the trip to Oakmont Country Club. "Fox will tell you it took him longer than expected to settle in here on the PGA Tour, but after a dramatic win a month ago, the Kiwi is playing free and is now a multiple-time winner," said Balionis after Fox's win in Canada. "Sam Burns is playing out of his mind right now. Once again, the LSU talent put himself in the mix, and if I'm you, I'm snagging him early for any US Open pools you might be in." Despite Balionis' faith, Burns has often failed to show his best in major competitions in his career. The Canada Open runner-up has managed just one top-10 finish in 20 majors and tied ninth at last year's US Open at Pinehurst No.2. McIlroy meanwhile has his own issues despite banishing his Grand Slam demons. A change of driver has caused some issues for the 36-year-old, who missed the cut at the Canadian Open. Balionis will not be working in Pennsylvania to see whether her tip pays off. Instead NBC will be in charge of the broadcast for the third major tournament of the year. The 38-year-old reporter is scheduled to return to action the following week at TPC River Highlands for the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. Signing off from her time in Toronto, Balionis said: "We had The Rink, we had the cutest kids visit us on set, we had the New Zealand national football team living and dying by every Ryan Fox shot. "We had an incredible national open. It's time for a week off. In my best Mike Wilbon voice, 'Goodnight Canada!'".

Amanda Balionis snaps back at trolls after interview ignites controversy
A few chirps are not going to get in the way of how Amanda Balionis handles her business. The CBS Sports reporter hit back at critics this weekend after they took issue with how she conducted a third-round interview with Rickie Fowler at the Charles Schwab Challenge, where she spoke to the six-time PGA Tour winner about contending for a title following a duration of play in 'neutral,' according to the Irish Star. 'When we talk about being you instead of trying to be what you think others perceive as 'perfect' or 'good enough'…here is an example of how the latter is simply an impossible and draining task,' Balionis began in a since-expired Instagram Story. Scottie Scheffler admits 'I'm just nervous' in interview with Amanda Balionis
Scottie Scheffler won his third major title as he claimed the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, but he was not as smooth while talking to Amanda Balionis after his third-round Scottie Scheffler did everything to ensure he didn't choke on the course - but the same can't be said for his post-third-round interview with Amanda Balionis. It was a near perfect weekend for Scheffler, who secured his third major title by winning the PGA Championship. The 28-year-old had quite the memorable weekend, though one particular moment that tickled golf fans happened off the green during an interview with CBS reporter Balionis. Scheffler had just cushioned himself a three-shot lead going into the final day with an impressive round of 65. While he was undoubtedly chuffed with his almost faultless game, his chat with Balionis hit unexpected turbulence when something caught in his throat. As she posed her opening question, Scheffler started coughing unexpectedly. The adept reporter had to swiftly improvise, covering the sound of his spluttering with quick wit. Scheffler started coughing just as Balionis said: "Scottie, you began the day at three you have a cough." Thinking on her toes, she quipped: "The allergies here are really bad in Charlotte. That's our first breaking news of this evening." Recognising that Balionis was using her light-hearted approach to keep the interview on track, Scheffler played along with a bit of humour by saying: "Sorry, I'm just nervous." The world No. 1's response made Balionis giggle, before a media coordinator and runner scrambled to find Scheffler a bottle of water. In response to his jest, she retorted with a hint of sarcasm, saying: "You haven't done one of these before." Scheffler, however, didn't falter in the final round. Initially, it seemed like he was in for a tough day, hitting three bogeys in his opening nine holes, while Jon Rahm closed the gap to level at the halfway point. But Scheffler found his stride, hitting three birdies in the back-nine, while the Spaniard crumbled, hitting a bogey and two double-bogeys in the final holes. Upon securing his third major, Scheffler let his emotions flow freely. He said: "It was a long week. I felt like this was as hard as I battled for a tournament in my career. This was a pretty challenging week. The first two days, I did not swing it my best, and I was able to post a score, somehow. "Outside of the last five holes [on Saturday], that's where I really kind of put myself ahead in the tournament. I mean, the back nine [on Sunday] was pretty special as well. "But [on Saturday], the way I finished off that round, I think it was really important for me to have a lead to play with. I played with it a little bit more than I would have liked to. "I think at one point in the tournament, I was tied for the lead on the back nine, but I stepped up when we needed to, and it was a pretty special week."
