Ana De Armas Says European Audiences Differ From American Because ‘They Know About Cinema and They Have Good Taste'
Ana de Armas knows the difference between European and American moviegoers – 'good taste.' During her 'Hot Ones' interview Thursday, host Sean Evans asked the 'Ballerina' star if she noticed a difference between 'what somebody who buys a movie ticket in Madrid is looking for vs. someone in L.A.' The actress said that American cinema has a greater influence in Europe than European cinema does here, but that with European moviegoers, it comes down to taste. 'The influence of American cinema in Europe is stronger I would say,' de Armas began. 'Europeans like European films I would say. I think Europeans also – or Spanish people – have a pretty wide spectrum of, they know about cinema, and they have good taste.' De Armas appeared on the show to promote her upcoming film 'Ballerina,' an action-forward spinoff set in the 'John Wick' universe. The story takes place concurrent to the events of 'John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum.' The trailer teased that Keanu Reeves, who has played the titular John Wick in four films, will also appear in the feature. According to the official synopsis, the story follows Eve Macarro (de Armas), 'a ballerina-turned-assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma, as she seeks revenge for her father's death. ' 'Ballerina' also stars Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Norman Reedus and Ian McShane. It is directed by Len Wiseman and produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski. The film also posthumously features Lance Reddick in his last screen role. The actor died in 2023 at age 60. 'Ballerina' releases in theaters June 6. Watch: Keanu Reeves praises Ana de Armas' 'Ballerina' training
May 30 (UPI) -- Lionsgate released a behind-the-scenes video on Ballerina on Friday. The film opens Wednesday in large format screens and June 6 everywhere. Keanu Reeves, who executive produces and reprises his role as John Wick, speaks over footage of Ana de Armas practicing fight choreography. "Ana's a wonderful actress, so talented and there's really not anything she can't do," Reeves says. "To see her shift into her next gear was really cool. She's like, 'Let's go.'" Some of the behind-the-scenes footage shows Reeves and de Armas practicing a knife fight. She plays Eve, a woman training at the Ruska Roma ballet/assassin school that also taught John. "If I am disciplined, I can get there," de Armas says. "I'm actually surprised that I came out of it in one piece." John Wick director Chad Stahelski also produces the spinoff. He speaks over footage of de Armas shooting an enemy while being pushed in a T-boned car. "We have a practical aesthetic that we try to apply," Stahelski said. "We need somebody to actually be performing that so when you have someone like Ana de Armas, the sky's the limit. How far can we push to give you that visceralness?" UPI will present our review of Ballerina and interviews with the cast next week.

Ana de Armas ‘Hated' Singing in Ron Howard's ‘Eden': ‘I Would Rather Do 100 Stunts'
Ana de Armas prefers to do anything else, even intense stunts, instead of sing onscreen. The actress, who will soon join the 'John Wick' franchise with 'Ballerina,' said during 'Hot Ones' in the below video that any stunt work is better than carrying a tune — something she had to do for Ron Howard's survival film 'Eden.' 'I hated it,' de Armas said. 'I remember when I talked to [director] Ron. And I was like 'Ron, I really think I should lip sync. This is not for me.' And he just didn't want to hear it. He was like 'no, you're singing. You're singing. If you do it bad, it's good for the character.' And I'm like 'yeah but people don't know that.'' More from IndieWire Pete Davidson Uncovers a Retirement Community Serial Killer in 'The Home' Trailer Bella Ramsey Wants 'The Last of Us' Fans to Watch Upcoming Indie Films Like They're 'Game of Thrones' De Armas continued, 'I just couldn't convince him to let me lip sync so I had to learn the song. It was horrible. I was terrified. I would rather do 100 stunts than sing that song. It was terrifying because it's also in front of all the actors. I just felt very exposed and vulnerable and it's not one of my talents for sure.' De Armas previously told Vanity Fair that starring in 'Eden' pushed her to get to her 'craziest' self onscreen, which is no small feat given her past dedication to portraying Marilyn Monroe in 'Blonde.' 'I got a little scared, and I told [Ron] I was nervous because it was really out there,' de Armas said of joining 'Eden,' which also stars Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law, and Vanessa Kirby. 'He was very supportive and excited. There was no question I wanted to do it. I wanted the challenge.' The 'Deep Water' star added, 'Having this crazy threesome relationship, and being a woman of opposites — either she's sweet and tender and fragile and nervous and scared, or she's absolutely crazy and dangerous, it was kind of finding that limit. What was the craziest I could get? How far could I go?' At the time, director Howard praised de Armas' 'creative courage,' saying, 'She's a risk-taker as an artist, and I knew that it was going to take that kind of individual.' The IndieWire review for 'Eden' also deemed de Armas a 'scream in a cast filled with standout performances.' John Wick 5: Ana de Armas on if She'll Return After Ballerina
While fans are eagerly waiting for the arrival of Ana de Armas' Ballerina, the actress has already shed light on her potential return to the franchise in John Wick 5. While Keanu Reeves, who has portrayed the legendary hitman for over a decade now, will be making an appearance in the franchise's first spin-off film, fans have wondered if Ana de Armas will return the favor in the confirmed John Wick 5. During her recent appearance at a recreated Continental hotel lobby at the John Wick Experience in Las Vegas, The Direct's Russ Milheim questioned Ana de Armas about the possibility of featuring in the upcoming installment in the John Wick film series. The actress expressed enthusiasm for the proposition but shied away from providing any confirmation. 'That would be really cool. I would love that. Why not? I mean, they already know each other, right? Like, why wouldn't it? I would love that. That would be amazing.' Taking place between the events of Parabellum and John Wick 4, the upcoming Ballerina will see Ana de Armas' Eve Macarro embark on a perilous journey to avenge her father's untimely death. The final trailer for the film also saw her character face off against Keanu Reeves' deadly assassin. It is currently unknown whether Ana de Armas' character will survive her encounter with John Wick. Additionally, with Reeves' hitman seemingly meeting his end in John Wick 4, fans are curious to know how the creators will enforce his return in John Wick 5, while hopefully adding Ana de Armas to the film's cast. At the time of writing, John Wick 5 does not have a release date window. As fans wait for more updates on the movie's premiere schedule, they can see Reeves' Wick in action in Ballerina, which hits theaters on June 6, 2025.
