Needy Blue Jays pay a steep price for Orioles reliever Seranthony Dominguez — and work on something bigger

BALTIMORE—The Blue Jays bullpen got further exposed by the Baltimore Orioles during Tuesday's doubleheader, so between games the division rivals got together and worked out a trade. After a 16-4 loss to the Orioles in the opener, the Jays kicked off their trade deadline shopping spree by acquiring veteran reliever Seranthony Domínguez. In return, they parted with right-hander Juaron Watts-Brown, their 10th-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler O'Neill, of Maple Ridge, B.C., homered for a fourth straight game, and the Baltimore Orioles tied a major league record with five sacrifice flies on Tuesday in a 16-4 rout of the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a doubleheader. Ramón Urías homered twice, and Gunnar Henderson also went deep for the last-place Orioles, who have outscored the AL East leaders 27-8 in the first two games of this series.

Orioles make curious bit of MLB history in blowout vs. Blue Jays

BALTIMORE — It took eight innings and the appearance of a position player on the mound, but the Baltimore Orioles made a curious bit of history on Tuesday afternoon: They tied a major league record by recording five sacrifice flies in a game. And, on a 97-degree day when the ball was jumping and the Toronto Blue Jays offered up a bullpen game in the opener of a split doubleheader, Baltimore became the first team with four home runs and five sacrifice flies in a single game, coming in a 16-4 throttling of the best team in the American League. They tied three other teams in recording five sacrifice flies, and the safety parade began early: Tyler O'Neill and Cedric Mullins each cashed in runs on fly balls in the first inning. MLB POWER RANKINGS: Yankees' AL East woes worsen with Aaron Judge injury Ramon Urias and Mullins repeated the feat in the third inning off Blue Jays starter Easton Lucas, giving them five innings to break the mark. Trouble is, the deep fly balls they hit kept going over the fence. O'Neill homered in his fourth consecutive game, Gunnar Henderson clouted another three-run shot, Urias hit a pair out of the yard. Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase was placed on paid leave Monday as Major League Baseball investigates sports betting by the players. This comes at the worst timing for the Guardians, as Clase was one of the most sought-after relievers on the trade market. Photo byClase was at the top of many teams' big boards for the trade deadline, and now that he is off the table, the competition to land the rest of the field just got tougher. The Pittsburgh Pirates have another one of the top choices in David Bednar, and the team is reportedly asking for a top five prospect in return, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That is a steep price to pay for a relief pitcher, although Bednar is under team control for next season. The St. Louis Cardinals and Minnesota Twins also carry some of the more coveted relievers this season, and they could capitalize on the Pirates' high price and the Guardians' unfortunate situation. The Cardinals hold Ryan Helsley, who is set to be a free agent this season, and is coming off a season where he led MLB in saves and won the National League Reliever of the Year Award. Helsley could have a higher markup for a deal, now that the Pirates have revealed their asking price. The Twins have been hesitant to deal Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax, but with the market thinning and the perceived value of players holding less value, it could sway the Twins into making a move. This season, it was not a team's acquisition that shook up the market ahead of the deadline but rather MLB's investigation into sports betting.
