Ayrshire restaurant reopens after huge makeover as part of £2.5m renovation

An affordable market menu has also been introduced with two courses on offer for £20. The Brig o' Doon in Alloway has officially reopened its restaurant after a five-month refurbishment and expansion. Now called Tales, the restaurant inhibits a purpose-built wraparound extension which also includes a lounge bar, private dining room and elevated public spaces with views of the River Doon. ‌ Purchased by the RAD Hotel Group from Costley & Costley in 2022, the Brig o' Doon has undergone a number of changes as the new owners invest in the hotel, restaurant and wedding venue. ‌ And the restaurant refurbishment marks the completion of the iconic venue's £2.5 million makeover. Ayrshire Live were invited to the soft launch of the restaurant which took place last week and over the weekend. The interiors have been curated by Lucid Interiors in collaboration with co-owner Vivien Kyle and relaxed, modern feel which is still in keeping with the hotel's past. ‌ An effort has been made to incorporate parts of Alloway's history and heritage with a hand-painted mural by artist Roderick McKenzie featuring a scene from Tam o' Shanter. ‌ The name and concept of the new restaurant is rooted in the poetic legacy of Robert Burns who famously penned many of his greatest works just steps from the hotel on the iconic Brig o' Doon bridge. Tales will operate seven days a week from noon until 10pm offering seasonal Scottish cuisine and sweeping views of the River Doon and gardens below. ‌ The menu features a range of cuisine to suit all tastes including traditional Scottish delights such as steak pie, Japanese-inspired BBQ pulled pork Bao Buns and The Immortal Smashed Burger for the burger aficionados. And it doesn't disappoint while the ample portion sizes leave enough room for a dessert such as the raspberry and white chocolate tiramisu. ‌ On Mondays to Thursdays before 6.30pm, Tales offers a more affordable two-course Market Menu for £20 which includes options from the full menu. ‌ RAD Hotel Group co-owner Vivien Kyle said: 'I wanted Tales to feel like stepping into a storybook. Something rooted in heritage but filled with imagination. 'Each space feels like its own chapter, from the cosy booths to the visual anchor of the riverside views. The palette, textures, and layout are all about creating little moments of magic.'

Vancouver driver's sick reply after killing 9 people and leaving 'bodies everywhere'

A man accused of driving a vehicle into a crowd at a festival, killing at least nine people, had a sick two-word response when he was confronted by bystanders at the scene. Police said the vehicle entered the street at 8.14pm on Saturday and struck people attending the Lapu Lapu Day festival in Vancouver, Canada. The country's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who cancelled his first event on the final day of the election campaign ahead of Monday's vote, confirmed nine people died and 20 were injured in the incident last night, reports the Mirror . A man was arrested after initially being apprehended by bystanders, Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai told a news conference. Now, video circulating on social media shows a young man in a black hoodie with his back against a chain-link fence, alongside a security guard and surrounded by bystanders screaming and swearing at him. "I'm sorry," the man replies, holding his hand to his head. Mr Rai declined to comment on the video, but said the person in custody was a "lone male" who was "known to police in certain circumstances". Video filmed at the scene shows the dead and injured along a narrow street in South Vancouver lined by food trucks. The front of the driver's SUV was smashed in. Witnesses described seeing " bodies everywhere" in the aftermath of the incident, which was described by the police as a car ramming attack. Yoseb Vardeh, co-owner of a food truck called Bao Buns, told Postmedia: "I got outside my food truck, I looked down the road and there's just bodies everywhere. He went through the whole block, he went straight down the middle." Jen Idaba-Castaneto, who was working as a security guard at the festival, told the local news site Vancouver Is Awesome: "You don't know who to help, here or there. It's so shocking." PM Carney said an investigation is ongoing "to determine how and why this horrific attack occurred." He added: "Authorities have confirmed one person is custody and it is believed they acted alone." The Vancouver Police Department said the arrested man is 30 years old. They added that the department's Major Crime Section is overseeing the investigation. "At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism," the police department posted early on Sunday. Mr Carney said authorities do not believe there is any active threat to Canadians. "Last night families lost a sister, a brother, a mother, father, son or a daughter. Those families are living every family's nightmare," he said, fighting back tears. "And to them and to the many others who were injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver, I would like to offer my deepest condolences." Vancouver Mayor Kenneth Sim said in a social media post that the city would provide more information when possible. "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today's Lapu Lapu Day event," he said. "Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time." The Canadian city had more than 38,600 residents of Filipino heritage in 2021, representing 5.9 percent of the total population, according to Statistics Canada, the agency that conducts the national census. Lapu Lapu Day celebrates Datu Lapu-Lapu, an Indigenous chieftain who stood up to Spanish explorers who came to the Philippines in the 16th century. The organisers of the event - which was in its second year - said it "represents the soul of native resistance, a powerful force that helped shape the Filipino identity in the face of colonization." Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a statement expressing sympathy with the victims and their families. "The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver is working with Canadian authorities to ensure that the incident will be thoroughly investigated, and that the victims and their families are supported and consoled," he said. The country's Department of Foreign Affairs said that "we remember the one-million strong Filipino community in Canada and pray for their continued strength and resilience."

Man arrested and nine dead after car ploughs into crowd at a Vancouver street festival. Here's what we know

Nine people are dead after a car ploughed into a crowded street festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Saturday evening. An unknown number of people were also injured in the mass casualty incident at an event organized by the local Filipino community. While Canadian authorities say they are 'confident' that it was 'not an act of terrorism,' Prime Minister Mark Carney said they are 'monitoring the situation closely.' What happened? According to Vancouver Police, at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday evening local time, a car was driven into the crowd celebrating the annual Lapu Lapu festival, a Filipino community event celebrating Lapu Lapu Day. At least nine people were killed and 'multiple others' were injured as the driver struck pedestrians. The incident occurred at E 41st Avenue and Fraser Street after the final live performance of the day on the grounds of a local high school by a Filipino American rapper and a founding member of the Black Eyed Peas. An eyewitness, Yoseb Vardeh, who is a co-owner of the Bao Buns food truck, told BBC World Service that the driver appeared to be going for 'maximum damage' as he went 'completely straight, right through the crowd' at about 100kph (62mph). He said the car struck several of his customers, adding that the driver tried to flee but was caught by people nearby. 'I just saw bodies underneath people's food trucks, and husbands crying out for their wife, or their kids. It was just horrible,' he said. Some unverified videos and photos show injured people lying on the street amid chaos and a heavy police presence. A black SUV with a crumpled front section could be seen in one of the still photos. Who was the driver? Police have taken a 30-year-old male suspect into custody. Only one vehicle and one suspect were involved. He was initially detained by people at the scene. The police did not clarify whether the suspect had a criminal record. 'It would be inappropriate for me to get into those kind of details at this point,' Steve Rai, interim police chief, said, adding it would be 'unfair' to make comments on whether the suspect was on bail. Authorities have not yet said whether the incident was deliberate. Vancouver police wrote on X late on Saturday: 'At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism.' 'We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds,' police said. An update is expected at 10 a.m. local time (1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. UK). What do we know about the victims? As yet, no details of those killed or injured have been released. It is expected that many will be from the Filipino Canadian community. This year's festivities were part of the broader recognition of 27 April as Lapu Lapu Day in British Columbia, officially declared in 2023 to acknowledge the significance of Filipino Canadians in the province. The day celebrates Datu Lapu-Lapu, an Indigenous Visayan Chieftain from Mactan, Philippines. According to the street party's website, Lapu-Lapu is considered the first national hero of the Philippines. He is described as an 'enduring symbol of unwavering resistance and indomitable spirit during the Age of Exploration,' and 'the first to rise against the tide of Spanish colonisation.' What has been the reaction from Canadian officials The incident comes less than 48 hours before Canada's federal elections. At the moment, there is no suggestion of a connection between the incident and the election. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was monitoring the situation closely. 'I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening,' he wrote. 'I offer my deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, to the Filipino Canadian community, and to everyone in Vancouver. 'We are all mourning with you. We are monitoring the situation closely, and thankful to our first responders for their swift action.' Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada's Conservative Party, called the incident a 'senseless attack,' while the leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, David Eby, said he was 'shocked and heartbroken.' New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, who was at the Lapu Lapu event in Vancouver before the incident took place, said he was 'horrified to learn' that 'innocent people' have been killed and injured. 'As we wait to learn more, our thoughts are with the victims and their families – and Vancouver's Filipino community, who were coming together today to celebrate resilience.' David Eby, the premier of British Columbia, the province where Vancouver is located, said he was shocked and heartbroken. 'We are in contact with the City of Vancouver and will provide any support needed,' he added. Vancouver mayor Ken Sim said in a statement on X that he was 'shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today's Lapu Lapu Day event.' 'Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.' What has been the international reaction? President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines, better known as Bongbong Marcos, said he was 'shattered to hear about the terrible incident' in Vancouver. Mr Marcos said the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver was working with Canadian authorities to ensure that the incident would be thoroughly investigated. In the United Kingdom, King Charles III has said he was 'profoundly saddened' to learn of the incident in Vancouver, extending his 'deepest possible sympathy'. Charles, who is the King of Canada, said: 'Both my wife and I were profoundly saddened to learn of the dreadful attack and utterly tragic loss of life in Vancouver, which took place as the Filipino community came together to mark the celebration of one of their most special festivals. 'Our hearts and prayers go out to all those whose lives have been shattered by such a desperate tragedy and we send our deepest possible sympathy at a most agonizing time for so many in Canada.' British Foreign Secretary David Lammy also said he is 'deeply saddened' by the incident in Vancouver. 'I am shocked and deeply saddened by the terrible events at Vancouver's Lapu Lapu festival last night,' Mr Lammy wrote on X. 'Our thoughts are with all of those affected, their families and loved ones.'
