Rajkot advocates ask for appointment of new district govt pleader, AGPs

Rajkot: A delegation of senior advocates from Rajkot met Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi during his visit to the city, demanding the appointment of a new district govt pleader and expedited appointments of assistant govt pleaders (AGPs). Dilip Patel, senior advocate and co-chairman of the Bar Council of India, said, "The current district govt pleader has been holding the post for eight years and has passed retirement age. The govt should retire him and appoint a successor. Interviews for assistant govt pleaders were conducted three years ago, but no appointments have been made so far." The district govt pleader heads the prosecution and assigns cases to AGPs in all courts. The advocates also voiced concerns about police conduct. They alleged that some junior police personnel behave rudely when lawyers visit police stations on behalf of clients. Additionally, they raised concerns about the city's worsening traffic situation. Vijay Togadiya, a secretary of the Revenue Bar Association, said, "We made a representation on the issue of the Disturbed Areas Act; which some people misuse through certain loopholes." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Sanghavi, while speaking to mediapersons later, said, "We are developing a master plan to resolve traffic issues across all cities in collaboration with municipal corporations. The police will act on suggestions from MLAs and party leaders. This coordinated effort will produce a 50-year roadmap for traffic management." New Cyber Crime police station inaugurated in Rajkot The state-of-the-art Cyber Crime police station for Rajkot range was inaugurated on Friday by senior minister Raghavji Patel in the presence of MoS home Harsh Sanghavi. The facility, built at a cost of Rs 4.41 crore, will handle serious cyber offences in Rajkot Rural, Jamnagar, Morbi and Devbhumi Dwarka districts. Located in a four-storey building, the station has a conference hall, data forensics lab, cyber helpline, monitoring and analysis rooms and a dedicated unit for child pornography cases. Sanghavi also inaugurated police housing projects at Ramnathpara, Vinchhiya and Atkot. 185 Pakistani migrants granted Indian citizenship in Rajkot During his visit, Sanghavi conferred Indian citizenship to 185 Pakistani nationals living in Rajkot, Morbi, and Kutch under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. At a Lok Darbar, Sanghavi also heard grievances from 64 applicants and instructed police officials to resolve their issues promptly.

Month after law college rape, CU may overhaul exam system

1 2 3 Kolkata: The format of the law entrance test is likely to be changed to bring back transparency in the entire process and stop the practice of excess admissions outside the merit list. An examination agency from outside may be introduced for conducting the entrance test from this year. The admission process for 14 law colleges affiliated with Calcutta University (CU), being conducted through the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET) by the dept of law, has come under scrutiny. The university is planning to involve an agency from outside to conduct the exam. Though admissions are made through entrance tests, many anomalies were reported in admissions, as several students with poor ranks gained entry to govt-aided colleges while students with good scores failed to gain admission. These irregularities came to light after a rape incident at a law college in Kasba. First-year admission has not been initiated as renewal for law courses by the Bar Council of India is pending because the required amount of Rs 35 lakh was not paid by the law department. It has been deposited on Thursday, said a source. The university expects to get the renewal from the Bar Council of India shortly, after which the admission will be initiated. "The only entrance test was being conducted by the department itself. University departments were never involved in the PG test to maintain its sanctity. How can a department conduct its own entrance test and publish merit lists on their own? This process needs to be revised." The admission process will be initiated only after approval comes, and the university expects this to happen within a week. Considering the number of anomalies reported regarding entrance tests, admission procedures, semester exams and irregular classes, the university has formed an advisory committee to look into the matter and regularise it. It had its first meeting on Wednesday, where issues related to this matter were discussed. It was found that the law dept had become a hub of anomalies. Staff shortage is another major concern for the department, which led to a new law dean being appointed from the English department. Sources said the university is planning to initiate recruitment soon to resolve this issue. An official said, "It is not easy to change a system which has been running for years, but whatever complaints have been raised regarding academic issues have been noted and will be resolved soon. Irregular classes and delayed results have become a practice that will be regularised gradually.

Govt's Rs 11cr bailout ends admission crisis for 28 law colleges in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: In a major breakthrough aimed at ending the prolonged deadlock affecting legal education in the state, the Gujarat govt has announced it will pay over Rs 11 crore in default fees owed by 28 grant-in-aid law colleges to the Bar Council of India (BCI). The move follows an earlier decision to waive Rs 3 lakh in annual inspection fees and Rs 50,000 in application fees for each college. The impasse had stalled student admissions for months due to unresolved legal and administrative issues. With this decision, the state education department has agreed to clear all outstanding dues—including default penalties—directly to the BCI, based on demand letters submitted by colleges through the education commissioner's office. Several colleges had been labelled defaulters for failing to pay annual inspection and renewal approval fees over the years. The state's financial intervention marks a critical step toward normalizing academic operations. The cumulative default dues range from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh per institution, totalling over Rs 10 crore, in addition to Rs 90 lakh in inspection and application charges. Bar Associations in Gujarat condemn denial of entry to advocate Italia at Rajpipla court

The Bar Associations of Gujarat — Gandhinagar, Navsari, Bharuch, Deesa, Wankaner, and Gariyadhar — on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning an incident of alleged denial of entry to Visavadar AAP MLA and Advocate Gopal Italia at a Rajpipla court on Sunday. The associations have written to the Bar Council of Gujarat, the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Bar Council of India seeking disciplinary actions against the police officers who denied him entry, asking them to ensure such incidents do not happen in future. AAP MLA from Dediapada, Chaitar Vasava, was arrested by the Narmada police on Saturday evening, and was produced before the Rajpipla court on Sunday. Italia had reached the court to represent his client Vasva. The police officers deployed at the main entry gate of the court allegedly stopped Italia from entering the premises. An argument ensued between the two sides. Sources said that people present outside the court recorded the incident on their phones and shared it on social media platforms. The policemen, however, allowed Italia to enter the court complex later. After coming across the video on social media, Bar Association presidents and committee members from Gandhinagar, Deesa, Wankaner, Gariyadhar, Navsari and Bharuch held a meeting and passed a resolution, condemning the act done by police. Demanding a reply from the state government on the issue and a PIL in the Gujarat High Court, their letter also mentioned that, as per The Advocates Act, a lawyer is considered a court officer and should not be stopped by anyone from entering the court complex. The Indian Express has accessed these resolutions. Talking to The Indian Express, Bharuch District Bar Association president Pradyuman Sindha said, 'We condemn the incident of Rajpipla, as police were seen stopping a lawyer from entering the court complex. The Bar Council of India has granted us the licence, and it is our right to enter the court complex; nobody can stop us. The court complex is our second house. In a letter sent to the Bar Council of Gujarat, the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and the Bar Council of India, we requested (them to ensure) that such incidents do not happen again, and if they do, we would urge lawyers to carry out a protest against the police. We have also demanded strict disciplinary actions against the policemen deployed at the main gate of Rajpipla court. We also want actions against top officials who might have sent directions to the policemen.'
