Reality check: three gripping shows that reveal the psychology of competition
"Battle Camp" season 1 cast. Image: Instagram. Over the past few weeks, I've swapped my usual line-up for some gripping reality TV competition shows on Netflix Think "Survivor", "The Mole" or "The Circle", but with a more refreshing take on things. And if I'm being honest, there were so many notable insights into human behaviour. First up was "Battle Camp", a mix of "Survivor" and "Wheel of Fortune", where the contestants are well-known stars from other shows such as "Squid Game: The Challenge", "Selling The OC" and "Too Hot to Handle". After being divided into teams, the Wolves, the Bears, and the Eagles, they feature in a mix of hair-raising physical challenges, group votes, and strategic gameplay to avoid elimination. Ultimately, contestants will need to be unbeatable, unbreakable and unhateable to have the chance of winning $250 000 (around R4.5 million). The show is a perfect blend of fun and nail-biting suspense. A scene from "Million Dollar Secret". Image: Instagram. Next up, "Million Dollar Secret". Hosted by British comedian Peter Serafinowicz, the series features twelve contestants, one of whom is secretly awarded a $1 000 000 prize at the start of the game. The contestant who finds it becomes the "Millionaire" and must conceal their identity for the duration of the game. The remaining contestants, known as "Hunters", aim to hunt down who is secretly holding the prize money. At the end of each episode, players vote to "lock out" the person they most suspect. If the Millionaire is eliminated, the money is re-hidden in a new box, and the game continues. Throughout the game, players must participate in trust-based challenges, alliance-building exercises, and "Secret Agendas," which are private missions that can influence power and suspicion in the house. The show incorporates elements of strategy, emotional intelligence and psychological deception. Cast of "The Trust". Image: Instagram. Then, "The Trust: A Game of Greed", heightened my fascination. Eleven strangers are offered $250 000 to split equally among themselves or to eliminate each other and eventually receive more money for themselves. Contestants play games that can add money to the prize pot. These include games that reveal secrets about each other or games that ask them to reveal their voting history. Some contestants are offered access to "The Vault", which allows them to take an offer which could benefit themselves or the group. "The Trust" explores human behaviour and psychology.

The 100% Scored Netflix Show Not Enough People Are Watching
North of North The top three shows I'm seeing in the Netflix top 10 list right now are the final season of You, the breakout romance drama Ransom Canyon and reality series Battle Camp that has a picture of a women eating a tarantula. Great. But one show is missing from the entire list, a 100% rated entry that was not given enough attention at launch. That show is North of North, the Indigenous comedy that has perfect scores from almost two dozen critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Close to release, it was hovering around the 4-5th spots on the list, but it quickly was erased entirely, and by shows that are not at all better than it. I'm concerned that because it doesn't have high profile actors or very much promotion at all, it's getting ignored, so I wanted to shine a spotlight on it as it really is quite great. Perhaps it's not FX's Reservation Dogs, but a solid comedy in its own right. Here's the synopsis: 'A young Inuk woman wants to build a new future for herself after a spontaneous — and extremely public — exit from her marriage. But it won't be easy in a small Arctic town where everybody knows your business.' North of North I cannot find it on any 'recommended' or 'new' section in the Netflix profiles on my account where it hasn't been watched yet. So it's not just audiences that aren't paying attention, it would seem to be Netflix as well. This seems like a series that should be a shoe-in for a second season with its low cost and high scores. There are some small, early indicators that the show may return for season 2 like sets being moved and preserved, but nothing official yet, unfortunately. Viewership may still be an issue. North of North is an easy watch with just eight episodes that are less than half an hour each. Really the perfect binge across a day or two. It deserves better than to permanently drop off the Netflix top 10 list so quickly, and honestly, I just think that people would like it a lot even if it's not eye-catching with big stars or some sort of word-of-mouth virality. I hope we seem more of it in the long term, but that remains to be seen. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Bluesky Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Cheer star Morgan Simianer reveals why she and Stone Burleson have still not been on honeymoon
Morgan Simianer and Stone Burleson have been "too busy" to go on a honeymoon. The 27-year-old reality star - who found fame through the Netflix docuseries 'Cheer' - tied the knot with loan officer Stone Burleson, also 27, in May 2023, but admitted that almost two years later, they still haven't found the time to go on a celebratory vacation because of their hectic schedules. She told E! News: "We actually still haven't been on a honeymoon yet because we've been so busy. 'So maybe that will be in the works, but we've just got busy lives, so [we're] trying to get that in there at some point!" But Morgan admitted that married life is still going well because she tied the knot with her "best friend" so they are both finding things "pretty easy" so far, despite what others might have thought. She added: "Everyone kept telling me the first year marriage is gonna be crazy, and I was like, 'I don't know what y'all are talking about. "I married my best friend, so life for us is pretty easy and I just get to spend every day with him. I'm pretty lucky." However, Morgan did struggle to be away from Stone when she signed up to appear on the Netflix series 'Battle Camp', which sees a host of celebrities fight against each other in a series of challenges in a bid to win up to $250,000. She added: "I felt bad because I was leaving him for so long and we spend every single day together. 'I was like, 'No communication with you. You don't know what I'm doing. I can't call you and be like, Oh my gosh, this is what happened.' I was shook by it, and I think he was shook by it, but also, I know that he was supporting me from back home." And following their reunion once filming was over, Morgan admitted that she and her husband do want to start a family "at some point" in the future. She said: We obviously want to have a family. "It's not 100 percent in the works right now, but at some point, yes, we want to start a family together and just continue to love each other and live life."
