‘We're going to miss him': Kevin Wells leaves a legacy of joy at Texas Roadhouse'

Editor's note: The video below is our full on-air story about Kevin Wells' legacy at Texas Roadhouse. From his daily routine to the celebration of his retirement, this piece shares Kevin's story through the voices of those who know and love him best. MIDLAND, Texas (KMIDKPEJ)- For eight years, the staff at Texas Roadhouse in Midland didn't need a clock to know when their day had started, they had Kevin Wells. Every afternoon, Kevin would walk in with a series of greetings that became part of the restaurant's rhythm. A quick hello to the host stand. A visit to the broiler line. A check-in with the dishwashers. Then, finally, he'd settle in at his station, where he's rolled thousands of sets of silverware over the years, always with purpose, and always with pride. Kevin, who lives with Down syndrome, is preparing to retire. And for those who've worked beside him, the thought of the restaurant without him feels like more than just the end of a shift. 'He is kind of a cheerleader and somebody who gives everybody a little spark when he comes in each day,' said Aaron Battles, the restaurant's managing partner. Kevin is deeply routine-oriented. His daily walk-through became a cherished part of the restaurant's energy, a moment of levity and connection in the middle of the hustle. And it wasn't just the staff who noticed. Regulars grew familiar with him, too, as he'd sometimes pass through the dining area with a quiet 'hi' and a smile. And then, there was the dancing. 'A lot of times people play music in the back, and depending on what the music is, Kevin will start dancing,' Battles said, grinning. 'There was one day…I think it was Cher's Do You Believe in Love After All?, and man, he really got into that one. It just makes everybody smile.' Kevin's job application came through a local support group years ago, but what he brought to the restaurant quickly became much more than a job well done. It became a masterclass in consistency, resilience, and joy. 'He's inspirational,' Battles said. 'Whatever is going on in his life, he still comes in and comes to work. He loves work. He teaches us a lot. I've always said, Kevin has done more for us than we ever did for him.' That sentiment is echoed across the team as they prepare to say goodbye. On Sunday, May 25, staff will line up at the door to welcome Kevin into the restaurant one last time, clapping, cheering, and high-fiving. They'll celebrate in 'the most Kevin way possible,' Battles said. But true to form, they won't hold him up too long. Kevin's not one to be late getting to work. It's that devotion, that sense of ownership and pride in the role, that made Kevin such a perfect fit for the Texas Roadhouse culture: 'Hard work, routines, and having fun along the way.' Battles hopes Kevin's story will encourage other employers to recognize the value in hiring individuals with disabilities, not as an act of charity, but as a smart investment in people who often bring unmatched loyalty and heart. 'Sometimes we have to adjust and adapt a little bit,' he said. 'But someone like Kevin is going to do so much more for us than we'll ever do for them.' As Kevin enters retirement, his coworkers will carry forward the culture he helped build. And for anyone who ever heard his hello or watched him dance to Cher in the back prep area, his legacy won't be forgotten. Because Kevin didn't just roll silverware. He rolled out joy, one hello, one routine, and one spark at a time. At the very start of his journey at Texas Roadhouse, Kevin Wells was celebrated with cheers, new t-shirts, hugs, and a first-name tag. In this exclusive video, watch the team mark Kevin's first year on the job, a moment that, even back then, showed just how much he meant to the people around him. The Voice Recap: Did the Last of the Blind Auditions Just Introduce Season 27's Winner?

The Voice wrapped up its Season 27 Blind Auditions Monday with some pretty damn good singers from which coaches John Legend, Adam Levine, Kelsea Ballerini and Michael Bublé could choose. But one in particular — lookin' at you, Pablo Herrera — made such a big impression that I wound up thinking he could win the whole shebang. And yes, I know that makes me sound like I'm sitting in a red swivel chair! Read on, and we'll discuss Pablo and all of the other contestants who advanced to the Battles below. Jay Ammo (Team Legend), 'The A Team' — Grade: B+ | Jay's lovely, lilting voice gave his Ed Sheeran cover wings and earned the contestant a four-chair turn in the process. I was as enchanted by the performance as the coaches but did wonder about Jay's range and versatility. What I took as heartfelt emotion may have also been the pitch issues that Michael heard. Read Episode 2 Recap Brook Wood (Team Kelsea), 'Save Me' — Grade: A | The minute Brook opened her mouth, Michael remarked that her vocal was 'nice and clean.' It was also sublimely beautiful. Brook sang her Jelly Roll/Lainey Wilson cover with an ear-opening clarity and a power that was undeniable. Surely, she'd have gotten more than two chair turns if the teams hadn't been so close to full. Adam David (Team Michael), 'Baby, I Love Your Way' — Grade: B+ | Part of me wanted to ding Adam for the affected way that he sang the classic, but another part of me was like, 'Shut the hell up, the dude is totally controlling what is obviously a massive and flexible voice.' The one-chair turn's coach called it when he singled out Adam's 'character voice.' Simone Marijic (Team Kelsea), 'favorite crime' — Grade: B+ | At once, Kelsea turned her chair for Simone, and I couldn't really hear why. It wasn't till later in her Olivia Rodrigo cover that we got to hear how gorgeous Simone's voice was when she really opened it up. The two-chair turn also handled the fast part of the song with the aplomb of an old pro. Promising. Pablo Herrera (Team Legend), 'Jealous' — Grade: A+ | Before Pablo took the stage, his sister told us that when he sang, we'd feel it — and right she was. The three-chair's Labrinth cover was steeped in emotion, he landed kickass runs, and wow! Even in that brief audition, you could well imagine the scope of his range. 'There are no boundaries for you,' Michael marveled. Tori Templet (Team Adam), 'Lover' — Grade: B- | I was afraid the Mazzy Star/Cowboy Junkies vibe that Tori was giving us on her Taylor Swift cover might not make the grade with the coaches. But she wound up getting a two-chair turn with her whispery voice. John even suggested that it sounded like she was almost whistling under the notes. Not sure how that'll play in the Battles… Alanna Lynise (Team Kelsea), 'Issues' — Grade: A | Tackling Julia Michaels, Alanna demonstrated enviable control of her voice — and what a voice it is, too! While perfectly enunciating every lyric, the three-chair turn imbued the hit with more feeling than I'd ever heard in it, turned up the power like she had her finger on the volume button and flittered around notes as easily as we might walk from here to there. Naomi Soleil (Team Adam), 'Stars' — Grade: B | Not until this 18-year-old had reached the end of her performance did she get chair turns from Adam and Michael (by then the only coaches with slots left to fill on their teams). Maybe they were just distracted by the interesting timbre of Naomi's voice. Adam was also taken with her distinct phrasing. Trevon Dawson (Team Adam), 'Religiously' — Grade: B | Though Trevon is a character with a capital C, he quickly proved that he isn't just personality. He started off his rendition of Bailey Zimmerman's hit with a storyteller vibe that belied his 17 years, then tore into the chorus like it was the last pork chop at Sunday dinner. A diamond in the rough with some real sparkle. The Voice Coaches, Ranked From the All-Time Best to… Well, the Rest View List So, which coach do you think has assembled the strongest team? The Voice Contestant Ryan Whyte Maloney Dead at 44

Ryan Whyte Maloney, who competed on Blake Shelton's team in Season 6 of The Voice, has died at the age of 44. He died by suicide, the Clark County Coroner confirmed to People magazine. Whyte Maloney first rose to fame with his audition in Season 6 of The Voice, which aired on NBC in 2014. He sang Journey's 'Lights,' accompanied by his own guitar playing, and all four coaches — Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher — turned their chairs, hoping to get him on their team. Whyte Maloney chose Team Blake, and he won his first Battle round with a rendition of Tina Turner's 'What's Love Got to Do With It.'
