Who Are The Top 10 Running Backs Heading Into The 2025 College Football Season?

Running back was arguably the strongest position in college football last season. Ashton Jeanty seriously threatened Barry Sanders' long-standing single-season rushing yards record. TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins teamed up to help Ohio State win a national championship. Cam Skattebo put Arizona State on his back and led the Sun Devils to the CFP behind his 1,700-yard season. All of those players are now off to the NFL, though, leaving college football without a clear-cut top player at running back, at least in the eyes of some. Penn State has a couple of running backs who can make their case for the honor, while Notre Dame has a running back who might also feel he's the top dog at the position. While we might not be as certain about who the No. 1 running back in the nation is entering 2025, the depth of talent at the position is still apparent. That's why forming a top-10 list wasn't easy, but we gave it a try. So, here are the 10 best running backs in college football ahead of the new season. 10. Bryson Washington, Baylor After redshirting in 2023, Washington had a stellar 2024 campaign. He rushed for 1,028 yards on 5.9 yards per carry. He added 217 receiving yards and a touchdown in the passing game as well, helping him earn Freshman All-American honors from multiple publications. Washington's play really took off at the end of the season, though. He rushed for at least 110 yards in each of Baylor's final four regular-season games and in five of its final six regular-season games. He scored 11 of his 12 touchdowns in that stretch. 9. Jonah Coleman, Washington The 2024 season might have been disappointing for the Huskies, but it certainly wasn't for Coleman. Following head coach Jedd Fisch from Arizona to Washington, Coleman rushed for 1,053 yards on 5.5 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns. He was productive in ranked matchups against Michigan and Indiana, putting up 184 yards over those two games. He was named third-team All-Big Ten as a result. 8. Desmond Reid, Pitt Reid made a seamless transition from the FCS to FBS in 2024, putting up better numbers at Pitt than he did in his last season at Western Carolina. The third-year running back rushed for 966 yards on 5.3 yards per carry and five touchdowns, adding an impressive 579 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns in 2024 on top of those numbers. Reid's contributions didn't end on the offensive side of the ball, either. He recorded 159 punt return yards and a punt return touchdown, earning second-team All-American honors from multiple outlets as an all-purpose player. 7. Quintrevion Wisner, Texas The Longhorns keep churning out quality running backs, with Wisner joining that lineage in 2024. He actually wasn't supposed to be Texas' starting running back entering the 2024 season, earning the job after CJ Baxter suffered a season-ending knee injury during fall camp. Wisner stepped up in Baxter's absence, recording 1,064 yards on 4.7 yards per carry to go with 311 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. Baxter will be back in the mix for Texas in 2025, so it might be tough for Wisner to put up over 1,000 rushing yards again. But his talent was too good to leave him off the list. 6. Ahmad Hardy, Missouri For the last couple of seasons, Luther Burden III brought the offensive spark for Missouri at wide receiver. This season, Hardy might be responsible for being the Tigers' offensive catalyst. He rushed for an impressive 1,351 yards on 5.7 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns at Louisiana-Monroe last season, winning Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Hardy was arguably the best running back in the transfer portal this offseason, with Missouri beating Ole Miss and Kentucky to land him. 5. Isaac Brown, Louisville After finishing third in the ACC in rushing yards last season, Brown is the conference's leading returning rusher for 2025. In fact, he proved to be one of the ACC's best running backs as a freshman in 2024, rushing for 1,173 yards on an impressive 7.1 yards per carry and 11 touchdowns. He rushed for at least 5.5 yards per carry in each of Louisville's three games against ranked opponents last year, putting up 151 yards in its upset win over Clemson. That helped Brown win ACC Rookie of the Year and earn second-team All-Conference honors. 4. Kaytron Allen, Penn State Allen is the first of two Nittany Lions running backs who'll appear on the list. Returning for his senior season, Allen made incremental improvements in each of his first three years in Happy Valley. He started off as an 800-yard rusher as a freshman in 2022 before rushing for 1,108 yards on five yards per carry and five touchdowns last season, and that was as he split carries with another player on our list. 3. Makhi Hughes, Oregon After losing standout Jordan James to the NFL, Oregon was able to land a quality running back to replace him for the 2025 season. Hughes transferred to Eugene after two strong seasons at Tulane, where he rushed for over 2,700 yards. Last season, Hughes rushed for 1,401 yards on 5.3 yards per carry and 15 touchdowns to be named first-team All-AAC for the second straight year. 2. Nicholas Singleton, Penn State The other half of Penn State's dynamic running back duo, Singleton is arguably the most complete running back in college football. His speed helped him rush for over 1,000 yards for the second time in his career in 2024, going for 1,099 yards on 6.4 yards and 12 touchdowns. As a receiver, Singleton had 41 receptions for 375 yards and five touchdowns. Even though Penn State has struggled in big games in recent years, Singleton has not. In the Nittany Lions' final four games of the 2024 season – the Big Ten Championship and three CFP games – he rushed for 376 yards and five touchdowns. 1. Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame Love was Notre Dame's offensive catalyst in its surprise run to the national championship game last season. He rushed for 1,125 yards on 6.9 yards per carry and 17 touchdowns, adding two receiving touchdowns as well. While his numbers in the postseason might not look great, Love was battling injury at the time. That didn't stop him from taking a run 98 yards to the house in Notre Dame's win over Indiana. Not only is Love our top-ranked running back heading into the 2025 season, but he's also one of FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt's top players entering the year . Klatt ranked Love as his sixth-best player in college football entering the year, saying that he "gives Notre Dame the ability to compete at the top end of the sport. "I don't think we've seen the best of Love yet," Klatt said. "He rushed for over 7.0 yards per carry [before the injury] and is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Those types of running backs who can change the game with one touch are really special." Marshall Manning enrolls at Baylor School

Marshall Manning has enrolled at Baylor Middle School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. He will be an eighth-grade day student at Baylor. Red Raiders' head coach Erik Kimrey did not confirm whether Manning was in his program. "I would prefer not to comment on younger players in our program until the appropriate time in their development," Kimrey told the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Manning, the son of former Tennessee and hall-of-fame quarterback Peyton Manning, was previously enrolled for middle school in the Denver, Colorado area. Every Big 12 football game you can't miss during the 2025 college football season

Before you know it, the 2025 college football season will be here, and the chase for postseason glory will begin. The Big 12 had only one team in the College Football Playoff field in conference champion Arizona State. Commissioner Brett Yormark has hopes of landing at least two teams in the field this year, which will be tough in such a deep conference. Whether the Big 12 will get multiple teams in the playoff remains to be seen, but the parity seen across the conference makes every week meaningful. The college football season can be overwhelming to even the most die-hard fan, so we have you covered. Here are the Big 12 games you should be locking in on each week this fall. Week 0: Iowa State at Kansas State (Dublin, Ireland) The Big 12 owns the best game on the entire college football slate during Week 0. Two of the conference's top teams squaring off in Dublin, what is not to like? Week 1: Baylor vs. Auburn Perhaps some fans might prefer TCU at North Carolina on Labor Day Monday, but in my opinion, you can't beat Auburn going up against a rising Baylor squad. Week 2: Iowa State vs. Iowa The Cy-Hawk rivalry returns to Ames with both teams seeking early momentum. Both teams could use this game as a launching pad for a successful season. Week 3: West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh The Backyard Brawl in Morgantown is always intense. With the two schools only 75 miles apart, the rivalry runs deep. If you are looking for someone for early-season excitement, look no further than WVU-Pitt. Week 4: Utah vs. Texas Tech Baylor hosting Arizona State nearly took the spot, but I think Texas Tech's trip to Salt Lake City has the potential to be electric. I like both games, and if Baylor starts the season hot, that might be the game to watch. Week 5: Colorado vs. BYU Another tough choice. You can either spend your Friday evening watching TCU go up against Arizona State or wait for a Saturday night tilt in Boulder. Your call, you really can't go wrong. Week 6: Baylor vs. Kansas State I could pick Colorado (who plays TCU in Fort Worth) again because they play nearly every top team in the conference, but for the sake of variety, here is something different. Baylor and Kansas State should be title contenders, so this one will be worth tuning in for. Week 7: Kansas State vs. TCU Week 6 is by far the most challenging slate of games to choose from. You have Iowa State visiting Colorado, Kansas at Texas Tech and Arizona State at Utah to go along with K-State hosting TCU. The Horned Frogs will have reached this game having already played Arizona and if they see a title run in their future, they will likely need a win in one of the two matchups. Week 8: Arizona State vs. Texas Tech The Holy War between Utah and BYU always delivers, but I don't think it will live up to Arizona State hosting Texas Tech. The defending champions against the popular 2025 title pick. Tech took down ASU in Lubbock last year, 30-22, and I expect the Sun Devils want revenge. Week 9: Kansas vs. Kansas State When both teams are good, the Sunflower Showdown is one of the top rivalries in the conference. The Jayhawks should be a solid team this season, making this matchup worth your while. Week 10: Kansas State vs. Texas Tech If I had to pick the top two teams in the Big 12 before the season started, it would be Kansas State and Texas Tech. They meet in Manhattan for a Week 10 showdown that could play a significant role in deciding who could play for the conference title. The Red Raiders will be hoping to end their eight-game losing streak to the Wildcats. Week 11: TCU vs. Iowa State Can Iowa State repeat the 11-win season from 2024? That could come down to a matchup against the Horned Frogs in Week 11. BYU's game against Texas Tech is also a solid matchup. Week 12: Baylor vs. Utah This is a sneaky good matchup late in the season. Baylor is a sleeper team in the Big 12, while Utah seems set for a huge rebound season. Sign me up. Week 13: Utah vs. Kansas State Utah versus Kansas State could have some postseason implications and will be a spectacle. The Sun Devils' visit to Boulder also could be memorable. Tune into both if you can. Week 14: Kansas State vs. Colorado A huge matchup to close out the regular season. Will Colorado still be in Big 12 contention? Does Kansas State need a win to clinch a championship game berth? Those questions will all be answered in Week 14. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Evidence Grows That Tripping on Shrooms Might Increase Your Lifespan

In a new study, scientists have uncovered evidence that magic mushrooms just might be an effective anti-aging treatment. Published in the Nature Partnering Journal Aging, a new paper by researchers at Emory and Baylor's medical schools suggests that psilocybin, the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms — there are a range of species that produce it, but the best known is probably Pisolocybe cubensis — might extend the lifespans of both mice and potentially humans. The two-part study tested medium-sized doses of psilocybin on older mice, and later introduced similar amounts of the compound to human cells to see how it affected their telomeres, which shorten as organisms grow older and are viewed as a hallmark of aging. In both the mice and the human cells — half of which were fetal lung cells, the other half from adult skin — the introduction of psilocybin was linked to preserved telomere length. In other words, the study appears to show that telomeres shortened more slowly after being given psilocybin than they would have without, and that mushrooms may increase cellular lifespan. In addition to the telomere findings, the researchers also noted that the psilocybin-treated mice showed increased survival skills and had "improvements in overall fur quality," which may suggest further anti-aging properties as well. According to Louise Hecker, a Baylor medical and cardiovascular researcher and the senior author of the paper, she and her colleagues were compelled to look into the potential lifespan-enhancing effects of psilocybin because, for the most part, it hasn't really been studied directly. "The overwhelming majority of what we know about psilocybin is how it impacts the brain," Hecker said in a press release about the study. "Our findings suggest that psilocybin has potent effects on the entire body, including antiaging properties, which also may contribute to the plethora of observed beneficial clinical outcomes." However, some previous research has suggested that psychedelic drugs could be linked to positive health outcomes. A study in 2021, for instance, found that people who used hallucinogenic drugs including psilocybin, LSD and mescaline had a lower risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. Some other studies suggest that people who have periodically used psychedelics recreationally are less likely to be overweight or obese. While Hecker's colleague and paper coauthor Kosuke Kato urged caution when establishing a causal link between shrooms and increased lifespan, he pointed to the results in the aged mice as perhaps the most important part of the research. "This is a very exciting and clinically relevant finding that suggests that even when [psychedelic] intervention is initiated late in life, it can have dramatic impacts," Kato said in the press release. While there's "still a lot to understand, including optimal dosing protocols that will lead to maximal efficacy," Kato said that further study will hopefully help researchers and medical practitioners alike figure out how psilocybin treatment can work. Hecker, meanwhile, enthused that her team's findings "open an exciting new chapter in psychedelic research" — a field that's already shown lots of promise in recent years when looking into the ways these drugs can help with mental illness and dementia. "Psilocybin may represent a disruptive agent that promotes healthy aging," she said. "The next steps need to explore the therapeutic effects across multiple age-related diseases."
