Man ‘strangles' wife to death, leaves body in hospital

Bhubaneswar: A man allegedly strangled his wife to death at their home in Mancheswar here on Sunday night over a family dispute and left her body on the Capital Hospital premises and fled. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police have detained the suspect, Gupteswar Behera (35). Police said the family members of the deceased, Nandita Behera (28), have filed a complaint against the man, after which a case of murder and domestic violence was registered against him. "As per the man's version, he found his wife hanging from the roof. During a heated exchange, he admitted to beating up his wife. Late at night, he said he found his wife had killed herself. He then took the body to hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The man then fled the scene," said Mrutyunjay Swain, IIC of Mancheswar police station. "An autopsy has been conducted. We will be able to ascertain who is telling the truth after we receive the report. But for now, we will book Behera under Section 302 (murder) of IPC. Even if the post-mortem report tells a different story, Behera will still face punitive action. In that case, it will be an abetment of suicide charge," Swain added. Family members of the deceased alleged that she was strangled to death. Later, Behera brought the body only to abandon it in the hospital to evade police action, they claimed. "Behera told cops that he feared his wife's death would turn into a medico-legal case (MLC) because she died by suicide and he would get embroiled in it. That's why he abandoned her body. His claims are being verified," the police officer said.

CBI arrests ED dy director in ‘bribery' case

Bhubaneswar: The CBI on Friday arrested Chintan Raghuvanshi, deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Bhubaneswar, and another middleman Bhakti Binod Behera for allegedly demanding bribe from a miner for sparing him in a money laundering case. Even though CBI FIR stated Raghuvanshi's 'direct role' is being investigated, agency sources said they have found prima facie evidence against him. According to a complaint by businessman Rohit Kumar Rout with the CBI on May 28, the ED had initiated a money laundering case against him in 2020 concerning alleged financial discrepancies in his stone crusher operations in Dhenkanal district. On Jan 8 this year, the ED conducted searches at his residence and office in Bhubaneswar. Subsequently, he received a summons in March and was questioned at the ED office. Rout alleged that Raghuvanshi, a 2013 batch IRS officer, through his intermediary Behera, demanded Rs 5 crore to give him a clean chit in the case. The alleged deal also included assurances against his arrest and attachment of properties, including his hospital. The amount was subsequently brought down to Rs 2 crore, Rout stated in his complaint. Behera told Rout to deliver the initial payment of Rs 50 lakh at 11am on Thursday. "CBI sub-inspector Ayan Mishra verified the complaint. The verification confirmed Bhakti's (Behera) instructions to Rout regarding the Rs 50 lakh initial payment towards the total Rs 2 crore bribe demand," CBI's FIR stated. According to sources, while the deal was being finalised inside a building in Saheed Nagar area on Thursday evening, CBI personnel intervened. CBI sources said Rout had taken Rs 20 lakh as part payment. Raghuvanshi and Behera were taken to the CBI office where they were detained and faced questioning. "Both of them were arrested on Friday. They were remanded in judicial custody following rejection of their bail pleas," a CBI source said. "As direct role of Chintan Raghuvanshi could not be verified at this stage, it was decided to proceed the case only against Behera, and to look into Raghuvanshi's role during investigation. Hence, a regular case is registered against Bhakti," the FIR added.

Water Metro In Mumbai, Other Places Soon? What Head Of Kochi Project Said

New Delhi: The Water Metro in Kochi has been successful and the Centre is now planning to start the ferry transportation system in 21 other places, the project's Managing Director Loknath Behera has said. Speaking exclusively to NDTV on Thursday, Mr Behera said the places where the system is likely to be introduced include Goa, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Lakshadweep and Guwahati, and a feasibility study in Mumbai has already been completed. Mr Behera, who is the Managing Director of Kochi Water Metro, said the system is cheaper and more sustainable than other means of transportation. "It also causes very little pollution and is much cheaper than Metro rail projects. Kochi Metro has 20 electric boats as of now, and our target is to increase the fleet to 78. Building the boats takes some time and they are being manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard," he said. "The Union Shipping ministry wants to start Water Metro projects, on the lines of the Metro Railway, at 21 places in the country. We have completed the feasibility study in Mumbai and similar studies are being undertaken in the other places, including Goa, Ahmedabad and Guwahati," he added. The Kochi Water Metro began operations in April 2023 and has ferried over 40 lakh people in two years. "Our boats are always full. People are enjoying using them... Launching the service in other places will have its challenges, but that is what the feasibility study is for. The state governments will also have to be involved. You may see Kochi-like Water Metro services in other places in three to four years," he said.

Mayor contests Behra's claim on launching boat services through rejuvenated canals in Kochi

Mayor M. Anilkumar said that Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) managing director Lokanath Behera's claim that boat services will be launched along six canals in the city, which are to be rejuvenated under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB)-funded Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project, was impractical and made unilaterally without consulting stakeholders. Mr. Anilkumar urged Mr. Behera to communicate more with the people's representatives instead of making unilateral statements, which was not befitting of a democracy. KMRL is the special purpose vehicle for the IURWTS project, under which Edappally Canal, Perandoor Canal, Chilavannoor Canal, Thevara Canal, Market Canal, and Konthuruthy Canal will be rejuvenated. 'Boat services were not discussed at any point during the canal rejuvenation project. The service may be possible through Edappally Canal and Chilavannoor Canal, considering their relatively greater width. The Thevara-Perandoor Canal was wide enough until the Pottakkuzhi stretch, facilitating a potential boat service linking Chittoor River to Pottakkuzhi. At best, pedal boats may be possible in the other canals,' he said. Mr. Behera, on his part, clarified that he had meant only Edappally Canal in the context of boat service, as it was not possible in other canals owing to the lack of vertical clearance caused by railway overbridges. 'The priority now is the completion of the bridge along Bund Road, while we remain hopeful of receiving approval for the rejuvenation of Market Canal. We may also undertake dredging of Edappally Canal to restore at least the water flow, subject to sanction from the KIIFB. We are also trying to fast-track land acquisition in consultation with the government and the district administration,' he said. Mr. Anilkumar said that a minimum width would be ensured for all canals, which would be flanked by walkways with seating arrangements to ensure access for future cleaning. Sewage lines and dedicated sewage treatment plants would be installed along the sides of the canals. He called for speedy decision-making to avoid inordinate delays that lead to cost escalations. The cost has already risen from ₹2,000 crore to over ₹3,000 crore. 'I am confident that the project will be launched this year and completed within the next two to three years. Just as solid waste management changed during this council's term, the canals will witness a similar transformation during the next council,' he said.
