"Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane on his other love: Sinatra

Even if you're not a regular "Family Guy" viewer, you've probably heard the show's iconic theme song. The song is largely the creation of Seth MacFarlane, whose love of animation may only be rivaled by his love for big, jazzy tunes. In fact, he's even got a semi-regular gig at the Vibrato Grill Jazz Club in Bel Air, Calif., singing songs from the Great American Songbook. But one thing he doesn't seem to love, considering he's lived his life in the public eye, is a certain kind of attention. He says sometimes getting in front of a crowd (or even our "Sunday Morning" cameras) doesn't quite come naturally. He is, he admits, an introvert. "Oh, hell yeah. Yeah. I don't even wanna be here!" he said. Seth MacFarlane performs at the Vibrato Grill Jazz Club in Bel Air, Calif. CBS News In fact, he says he sometimes has to resort to liquid courage. "I think I had like four scotches before I walked out on stage at the Oscars," he said, referring to his hosting gig in 2013. "I do get, yeah, I definitely get nervous." You might know MacFarlane as the voice of Peter, Brian Griffin and Stewie on the show "Family Guy" that he created more than two decades ago. In 1999, MacFarlane became the youngest showrunner in Hollywood history. And less than a decade later, with three network shows on the air, he became Hollywood's highest-paid writer-producer. But back in college, MacFarlane's first love was singing. "My sister, at the time, was going to the Boston Conservatory of Music for musical theater," he said. "She has a beautiful singing voice. And I had got it into my head that I was going to maybe go to grad school for musical theater as well. So, I applied and got in. And I was all set to go to their grad program. And I got this offer from Hanna-Barbera to come do an animated short for a series that they were developing. And so, I just had to take it, moved out to California. But there was an instant there where I could have kind of diverged into a completely different career and never, you know, never even thought about something called 'Family Guy.'" MacFarlane loved film scores as a college student and to this day he uses a live orchestra to score his TV shows. "It's the one part that I don't really understand, even to this day," he said. "There's still something mysterious about how a composer sits down to write, and then a couple weeks later walks in front of an orchestra, plops down these charts, and they all play it. And you hear this insane, magical sound. That still eludes me." Frank Sinatra Jr, and Stewie and Brian (Seth MacFarlane), perform "At Frank Sinatra's Restaurant (Jr.)" from "Family Guy": For his latest album "Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements" (out this week), MacFarlane and Joel McNeely, his composer and arranger for "Family Guy," combed through the Sinatra Family archives for songs that had been arranged for Sinatra but never fully recorded. For McNeely, the process was almost like speaking to the ghosts of the greatest arrangers in popular music, the men who helped make Sinatra's voice shine. McNeely showed an arrangement by Nelson Riddle: "This was the first one we read when we had a sight-reading session at Fox. We got an orchestra together just to see what was there, you know, because there was nothing to reference. But all this time later, these little black pencil dots on paper, there's his voice brought back to life. I mean, it was chilling." Seth MacFarlane recording songs for his album "Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements." Verve/Republic So, what exactly does an arranger do? "Frank Sinatra, there's a recording of him saying that the arrangers could be in a sense a recording secretary, taking the vision of the artist and interpreting it into this," McNeely said. MacFarlane said, "You take a song like 'Fly Me to the Moon,' for example, which I think was originally a ballad. [Here], it's the same song, but it's a completely different animal." McNeely says MacFarlane is preserving the essential legacy of the American Songbook through his recordings and the music of the TV show "Family Guy." But what about the legacy of "Family Guy"? MacFarlane has some thoughts: "When I started the show – this is the conversation that, like, tortures me at night! – when I started the show, my attitude was, it doesn't matter, none of it matters. It's like, It's funny? Let's do it. "And the older I've gotten, I look back at shows that we've done, and I'm like, Gosh, I guess it's a little more complicated than that, isn't it? Comedy and jokes do have an impact. I have to figure out a way to maintain what the show is, and maintain the thing that people love. But at the same time, recognize that, like, all right, I am analyzing it now in a different way than I did when I was younger." If it's true that you're nobody 'till somebody loves you, then thanks to "Family Guy"'s legion of fans, Seth MacFarlane, it turns out, is a very big somebody indeed. Ally walked down the aisle to a violin version of Kari Jobe's 'Holy Spirit,' Ally and her music executive husband exchanged both traditional and personal vows that kept her up most of the night writing them. 'I basically stayed up the whole night writing my vows,' Ally said. 'Then, in the morning, I tweaked a word or two.' And when it came to telling their families and friends that they planned to elope, they were met with nothing but support. 'Everybody was supportive, and they were thrilled for us,' she says. 'They were like, "Look, if you want it to be just you, it should be just you."' Will added, 'We'll do something soon with them this fall with all the families, but we wanted to do this, and [I'm] so glad we did.' Ally and Will met when he was Fifth Harmony's tour manager and she has her bandmates to thank for her marriage. Seen here with Fifth Harmony in 2015 The newlyweds will go on their honeymoon this summer. When it comes to starting their own family, Ally and Will are planning to become parents eventually. 'We both have a timeline, but not immediately.' Her wedding day was a dream come true, 'If I could relive the wedding day and wedding night, I would.' Ally and Will have known each other for a decade. 'I knew the moment that I…truly, when I saw him, I fell in love with him,' she explained, 'but I knew about a year in that he was the one for me.' Bracey added: 'She's easy to love.' Ally's wedding comes as her group Fifth Harmony is in talks to reunite after calling it quits in 2018, The Hollywood Reporter revealed. All of the group's members with the exception of Camila Cabello are set to get back together. The group was formed on X Factor in 2012 and consisted of Cabello Normani, Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui. The quintet went on to become one of the best-selling girl groups of the 2010s. THR reported, 'The group is working on a documentary to chronicle their return to the stage, which would capture footage on a yet-to-be-announced tour. 'It's unclear who is managing the group, but Will Bracey, who is married to Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke — and serves as chief operating officer of the Justin Bieber family office — is said to be leading the charge.'

Jennifer Aniston's alleged stalker found not mentally competent to stand trial

The man alleged to have crashed his car through a gate at the Bel-Air mansion of actress Jennifer Aniston has been ruled not mentally competent to stand trial. Earlier this month, 48-year-old Jimmy Wayne Carwyle was arrested in connection with the incident. According to prosecutors, the Mississippi man has repeatedly harassed Aniston through online messages and voicemails. She was home when he attempted to ram through the gate, police said. Jimmy Wayne Carwyle was ruled not mentally competent to stand trial on Thursday, May 29, 2025. KCAL News Last week, a psychiatrist ruled that Carwyle was not mentally competent to stand trial. He's facing one count each of felony stalking and felony vandalism. If convicted, Carwyle could face three years in state prison.

Shock twist as Jennifer Aniston's shirtless ‘stalker' WON'T stand trial for ‘harassing star & ramming into mansion gate'

JENNIFER Aniston's accused stalker who crashed into the security gates at her Bel Air mansion has been declared unfit to stand trial by a psychiatrist, The U.S. Sun can reveal. Jimmy Wayne Carwyle, 48, from Mississippi, appeared in mental health court in Hollywood on Thursday morning. 6 6 6 Carwyle has pleaded not guilty to charges including felony stalking and felony vandalism after allegedly driving his Chrysler PT Cruiser through the gates of Aniston's property on May 5, 2025. He appeared in court on Thursday wearing a yellow t-shirt and sporting a new look after a shave and a haircut, a stark difference to his previously disheveled appearance. In mental health court last week, public defender Robert Krauss revealed a psychiatrist's review found him to be incompetent to stand trial. But Carwyle demanded a second opinion and Judge Maria Cavalluzzi said it was his legal right to have another psychiatrist review his mental state. On Thursday, Krauss revealed the new psychiatrist is also of the opinion he is "not presently competent to stand trial." He told the court, "It's not the outcome my client would have preferred." RESTRAINING ORDER Criminal proceedings are now suspended and Cawryle will be put on medication ahead of an interest of justice and placement hearing on June 26, 2025. The judge said two new reports will be produced and it will be an "opportunity to hear from the victim," although it will likely be a statement through Aniston's lawyer. Carwyle is accused of harassing Aniston, 56, including social media, email, and voicemail messages between March 1, 2023, and the day he was arrested. He is charged with one count each of felony stalking and felony vandalism, along with aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm. Jennifer Aniston's shirtless 'stalker' insists he can stand trial despite wife revealing he 'believes he's Jesus' Aniston was at home during the incident but did not come face-to-face with her alleged stalker, as he was held at gunpoint by her security team until police arrived. A judge previously granted a restraining order keeping him at least 100 yards away from the Friends star and banning any contact. The U.S. Sun understands Carwyle had been speaking to someone online who was impersonating Aniston in the weeks leading up to the incident, who had also been in contact with his family. The actress's lawyer, Blair Berk, was present in court on Thursday but did not speak during the hearing and refused to comment on the ongoing case. Carwyle's estranged wife previously claimed he traveled to Los Angeles months ago on a mission to meet the actress. Julia Carwyle told the Daily Mail he believes he's Jesus and Aniston is supposed to be his "queen." "I guess he was speaking with her. He had the impression that Jennifer Aniston and he were going to talk and meet," she said. "He thought 'Maybe she's just going to meet a guy [...] to take a chance.' That's the way he was thinking." After seeing shocking images of Carwyle shirtless and staring ahead in his first court hearing, Julia said she no longer recognizes her husband. "It doesn't even look like him. He's no longer there," she said. According to the outlet, Aniston is now looking at relocating to her newly-renovated Montecito mansion following the incident. She purchased the luxury home from Oprah Winfrey in 2022 through an off-market deal for around $15 million. Celebrity friends including Gwyneth Paltrow and Jimmy Kimmel are said to be offering to help her settle in. "Jen is happy to have a safe place to run to where she can let her hair down," a source said. 6 6 6
