"The Summer I Turned Pretty" Trivia And Easter Eggs

The Summer I Turned Pretty is one of the most significant teen shows of the decade — and with Season 3 coming out soon, it's the perfect time to dive into the show's behind-the-scenes lore. Here are some interesting facts and Easter eggs you won't want to miss... Lola Tung and Chris Briney, who play Belly and Conrad, had to do their chemistry test over Zoom back in 2021 when the series was in pre-production. And they nailed it! 🔥 Lola fractured her foot while filming the very first episode of Season 1. "We were filming the flashback scene," she revealed. "We were running around the table and I jumped to grab the muffin from Sean and I landed weird and fractured my foot." The show is set in Cape Cod but is filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, which is a hotspot for teen TV — iconic series Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, and the more recent show Outer Banks were also filmed there. Jenny Han, who is both the creator of the show and the author of the books it's based on, has a cameo in each season — in Season 1, she appears at the deb ball, and in Season 2 she's a customer at the gas station. Keep your eyes peeled for her in Season 3. Taylor Swift features heavily on the soundtrack for The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is a nice full-circle detail, considering Jenny Han says she listened to Taylor's album Fearless on loop while writing the original books. Some of Belly's looks in Season 1 were directly inspired by Olivia Hussey as Juliet in the 1968 film version of Romeo and Juliet. Lola Tung went to high school with two of her co-stars — David Iacono, who plays one of her love interests, Cam, and Sean Kaufman, who plays her brother, Steven. The three of them attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. The cast seems to have as much fun on set as their characters do — between filming, they do things like play baseball, play chess, game, go on picnics, and have pillow fights. Although they do have tense moments too — Chris revealed Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, didn't talk to him after he went "too far" filming a Season 2 scene where Conrad is mean to Jeremiah and Belly. Chris apologized and made up with Gavin. Gavin credits spending all his time at the beach playing beach volleyball and swimming in the ocean with giving him such incredible curls. Jenny Han says she drew on the movie Beaches for inspiration for the platonic soul mates story of Susannah and Laurel. Laurel's memoir being named It's Not Summer Without You is not only an emotional tribute to Susannah, it's a nod to the title of the second book in Jenny Han's original series. There's a small moment in a Season 2 flashback where Laurel knocks over letters Susannah is writing to her sons — foreshadowing a mix-up with them that is a major plot point in book 3 and, presumably, Season 3. Season 2 had all female directors across its eight episodes. Zoe Cassavetes directed Episodes 1 and 2, Isabel Sandoval directed Episodes 3 and 4, Sophia Takal directed Episodes 5 and 6, and Megan Griffiths (pictured above) directed Episodes 7 and 8. In the final episode of Season 2, both Belly and Conrad are bathed in warm light in the motel, while Jeremiah is in the cool lighting — suggesting Belly's heart is ultimately still with Conrad. The Season 3 teaser poster visually references the movie Sabrina. The characters actually go to see Sabrina at the drive-in in Season 1. Like The Summer I Turned Pretty, it's about an "ugly ducking" who gets a glow-up and is pursued by two rich brothers she's grown up with. Many fans believe the poster is a hint that Belly will definitely choose Conrad in the show, like Sabrina chooses Linus (Humphrey Bogart's character). Are you Team Bonrad or Team Jelly? The Summer I Turned Pretty S3: Makers warn ‘heartbreaking' finale as Belly Conrad's story diverges from the Book

The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3, which is also going to be the franchise finale, might not turn out as expected. If you have read the original Jenny Han novel and are rooting for a happy ending for Belly and Conrad, the makers seem to be preparing for an emotional finale instead. While it's not certain whether the finale will side with Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, there's going to be heartbreak, and everyone involved knows it. The show stars Lola Tung (Belly), Gavin Casalegno (Jeremiah), and Christopher Briney (Conrad). A few days ago, a set video leaked where the cast was seen soaking in the sun, and when Belly and Conrad's eyes meet, he gives her a thumbs up. Fans took it as a sign that a happy ending is on the way, however, it was later revealed that the scene was shot after the finale wrapped and has nothing to do with the finale itself. Also read: The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 teaser: 5 subtle clues you might have missed hinting at Belly and Conrad's future The Amazon Prime Video show is based on Jenny Han's YA book trilogy. The first season premiered in 2022 and became an instant hit. Season 2, which dropped in 2023, was even bigger and ended with Belly breaking things off with Conrad and choosing his younger brother Jeremiah instead. Since then, the fandom has remained divided between the two brothers. Now, season 3 finally arrives on July 16, and the big question is: who will Belly choose this time? In the book, the female lead ends up with Conrad. But Jenny Han, in a recent interview with ET, warned fans not to assume anything beforehand. 'There are surprises. And there are things that aren't exactly like the books,' Han teases. The story stretched so long that the makers even debated splitting it into two parts, but ended up with showrunner Sarah Kucserka deciding to give us a supersized final season, 11 episodes. 'Three books, three seasons. It feels right to me,' she says. The cast, on the other hand, are enjoying watching fans online trying to guess what happens next. But they're all very tight-lipped about the ending, and even during interviews, they sidestep questions about the finale. 'You don't really know,' says Gavin with a smile. 'You have no clue,' adds Lola. Briney jokes, 'You haven't read the scripts!' All those smirks and mysteries are enough to give fans butterflies in their stomachs. But the biggest bombshell comes from Jenny Han, who isn't interested in giving readers the same ending twice. She wants fans to watch the show and feel that nervous excitement. 'That's an experience worth protecting,' she says. 'Whether they want me to or not.' The makers, however, never revealed whether the changes would impact the original storyline and ending. She knows the Conrad vs. Jeremiah debate is intense online, but in the end, the cast knows they can't make everyone happy. 'I have to please myself first, as a storyteller,' Han says. 'Even if people aren't happy, they know they're getting a good, quality story,' Lola added. The show picks up two years after season 2 ended. Earlier, the full trailer of The Summer I Turned Pretty was released, teasing Belly and Jeremiah's love story and happy dating life as they go back and forth between college and home, which feels lonely after the brothers' mom died. But Belly's presence keeps sunshine alive. The teaser in the last episode showed Conrad making his comeback, and just then, Taylor Swift's songs do enough to create excitement as the music changes from Daylight to Red, signifying Belly's inner feelings for Conrad as their eyes meet.

Here's why 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' is saying goodbye after season 3

Prime Video's The Summer I Turned Pretty is gearing up for a highly anticipated return with season 3, which will also mark the end of the fan-favorite series. Based on Jenny Han's beloved novel trilogy, the show follows Belly Conklin as she navigates the tangled emotions of love, friendship, and family during her yearly stays at Cousins Beach with brothers Conrad and Jeremiah. Season 1 introduced the charm and drama of Belly's coming-of-age story, capturing her evolving feelings for the Fisher brothers. Season 2, adapted from It's Not Summer Without You, dove deeper into heartbreak, family tragedy, and emotional conflicts as the group grappled with Susannah's illness. Season 3, which is based on the final book, We'll Always Have Summer, is expected to bring closure to Belly's love triangle and the bittersweet end of her childhood summers. Though the show has been wildly successful since its debut, Prime Video confirmed that season 3 will be its last. The decision to end the series after three seasons reflects a commitment to staying true to Jenny Han's original trilogy. Attempting a fourth season without source material 'has the potential to drag out the story longer than necessary and severely hurt the themes of growing up, friendship, family, and romance.' Viewers might also find an added season 'unnecessary and unfaithful to the original plot,' ultimately weakening the emotional impact the story has built across its three parts. Season 3 premieres July 16, 2025, and promises to give fans a heartfelt conclusion to the story that's defined a generation of summer love.
