Blessed with a trinity of eggy Benedictions
Eggs Benedict on crisp pancetta and toasted ciabatta at Col'tempo. Image: Frank Chemaly Eggs Benedict has come a long way from its origin as a hangover cure. The legend has it one Benedict, feeling decidedly under the weather, ordered it at one of New York's swanky hotels at the height of America's gilded age. His request was for eggs on ham and toast smothered in Hollandaise sauce. The hotel obviously thought the toast was a bit beneath them and made such a glorious mess more chic with an English muffin. And while there are certainly better hangover cures, a whole range of delicious breakfasts have been created and are still enjoyed some 130-odd years later. The base may change but the concept of luxuriously draping eggs in a sauce of more eggs and butter remains. Bacon is a common replacement for ham, and my favourite. I've had versions atop smoked salmon, seared tuna, fresh oysters, wilted spinach and a mushroom ragu. All hit the spot. One I do at home sits on top a bed of herby balsamic roast tomatoes with a hint of chilli. I was lucky to enjoy three different Benedicts at my favorite coffee shops recently. Col'tempo This little Italian deli and eatery in Morningside could be plucked straight off the Amalfi Coast and transplanted in Durban. We sit outside in the quiet courtyard under the vines and feel like we're in a different world. The coffee is a testament to the Italian barista's art, the aperitif of choice is an Aperol spritz. The pappardelle with beef ragu is legendary, as are their baked artichokes. Inside they make their own charcuterie and offer Italian delicacies from nougat to imported Gorgonzola. Their bottled artichokes are the best value in Durban. The Benedict here has an Italian twist. On toasted ciabatta - which I prefer, as often the English muffin can become very doughy, especially if it isn't toasted properly - are slices of crisp pancetta, two perfectly cooked, soft poached eggs, enrobed in a good rich Hollandaise. Simple, elegant and delicious. And if like me you want something sweet after your eggs, try their olive oil cake, or orange cake or light fruit cake, or linger longer over another Aperol spritz. After all, Col'tempo means with time. Food: 4 Service: 3 ½ Ambience: 4 Value: 4 Eggs Benedict on smashed avo at Boston Brew. Image: Frank Chemaly Boston Brew This charming old Berea verandah home has become a thriving community coffee shop. Cyclists and runners in the mornings, mums after the school run, and mums and kids in the afternoons. You're likely to meet someone you know. Everything spills out into the garden. Sadly the new McDonalds drive through across the road removes some of the park-like feel. But the coffee is excellent. My double espresso arrives coated in an enviable layer of rich crema. The baking is also notable. A variety of cheese cakes, crunchies, banana bread and croissants. The menu is mostly vegetarian and pork free, so here I try their Boston Benedict, with the poached eggs sitting on a pile of smashed avo. It made for a lovely creamy version of the classic. There is also a mushroom version - which I can vouch is good. And I am sure they would do one with smoked salmon. My only criticism of eggs Onasis is that too often the salmon isn't brought to room temperature first and the eggs get cold very quickly. This time I finished with a second cuppa and a lovely little pasteis de nata. Food: 3 ½ Service: 3 ½ Ambience: 3 ½ Value: 3 ½ Eggs Benedict on wilted spinach and brioche toast from Humble Coffee. Image: Frank Chemaly Humble Coffee Humble Coffee in Windermere finally has premises to match their excellent offering after taking over an interior design shop in Lilian Ngoyi Road and they've turned it into a buzzy vibrant space. Here keyboard warriors bash away at laptops under the warm winter's sun. There's a bar counter and plenty of chit chat at indoor tables, and a 'boardroom' out back. You place your order at the counter which is groaning with appealing baked goods. Raspberry white chocolate and tahini blondies, and lemon and coconut cake. The food offerings here are mostly vegetarian and include a superb cheese, red onion and mango pickle toastie. Service is bright, breezy and quick. As I'm sipping a lovely rich and mellow cappuccino, I decide on their brioche Benedict. Two perfectly cooked poached eggs on wilted spinach and brioche toast, the brioche a nice slightly sweet foil to the savoury spinach. I enjoyed it immensely. And for something sweet, a good slice of orange and almond cake. Food: 3 ½ Service: 4 Ambience: 4 Value: 3 ½

Bridgerton Earns Early Renewal for Seasons 5 and 6 — Plus, Watch a Season 4 Sneak Peek
Lady Whistledown is delivering a piece of good news: Netflix has renewed Bridgerton for Seasons 5 and 6 ahead of Season 4's debut. The streamer announced the super-sized renewal during Wednesday's Upfront presentation, where Netflix also released a sneak peek for the forthcoming fourth season, which will premiere in 2026. (Watch video above.) More from TVLine Yellowjackets Renewed for Season 4 The Bear Season 4 Trailer Reveals Fallout After Carmy and Syd Receive Damning Restaurant Review The Last of Us Boss Hints at Season 4: 'There's No Way to Complete This Narrative' in Upcoming Third Season The eight-episode Season 4 centers on Benedict (played by Luke Thompson), the bohemian second son in the Bridgerton family, and a mysterious Lady in Silver (Halo's Yerin Ha). 'Despite his elder and younger brothers both being happily married, Benedict is loath to settle down — until he meets a captivating woman at his mother's masquerade ball,' per the official logline. Though her identity is not at first known to Benedict, the woman turns out to be Sophie Baek, a secretive maid with big dreams. The Julia Quinn adaptation first hinted at Sophie's arrival in the Season 3 finale, when Eloise mentioned her mother Violet's forthcoming masquerade ball. Benedict noted his RSVP for the event, telling his sister, 'I will be there, hiding out behind a mask, avoiding eligible ladies like the plague.' (As if!) Bridgerton Season 4: Everything We Know View List As previously reported, the fourth season has cast Katie Leung (the Harry Potter franchise, The Peripheral) as Lady Araminta Gun, a widower with two girls making their debuts; Michelle Mao (Goosebumps) as Rosamund Li, Araminta's eldest daughter and most prized possession; and Isabella Wei (The Crow) as Posy Li, Rosamund's chatty younger sister. Meanwhile, Emma Naomi, who plays Alice Mondrich, and Hugh Sachs, who plays Brimsley, have been upgraded to series regulars. Although Benedict and Sophie's romance occurs in the third installment of Quinn's wildly popular book series, Season 3 skipped that romance to focus on Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). The latter's friends-to-lovers arc, which wrapped during Part 2 in June 2024, resulted in a marriage and a male heir. Hot Wheels tour coming to Detroit with chance to see your custom car as die-cast
Got a cool ride that might make an awesome Hot Wheels toy car? Now might be your chance to make that a reality, or at least check out some potential candidates for die-cast fame, at what is billed as the world's largest traveling car show. This weekend, the Hot Wheels Legends Tour heads to metro Detroit, the fourth stop on the U.S. leg this year. Those who register their custom build will have a chance to compete and possibly see their creation turned into a Hot Wheels die-cast that will be sold around the globe. The local winner moves on to the national semifinals, which will determine who represents the United States in the finale. Last year's winner — a significantly modified 1968 Ford Falcon named 'La Liebre' — hailed from Chile. Judges included Jay Leno and Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias. The event, which is in its eighth year, began initially as a way to honor the legendary die-cast line's 50th anniversary, according to Bryan Benedict, key principal designer at Hot Wheels, who spent five years on staff at Honda but also worked in design for auto suppliers at automakers including Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. Shifting from design in the automotive industry to the world of Hot Wheels opened up a universe that's 'way more fun,' but Benedict still gets to explore his passion. 'We eat, sleep and breathe cars,' he said. Benedict said the enthusiasm at the tour stops is 'through the roof.' The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon May 31 at the Walmart at 7555 Telegraph Road in Taylor. The show is free and open to anyone. There's also no cost to register a vehicle online for the competition, although slots are limited based on the size of the parking lot. Hundreds of unique vehicles are expected. Special items will also be for sale. Vehicles are judged on three criteria — authenticity, creativity and garage spirit. They need to make a bold statement and should show commitment by the owner, not just that someone was willing to put up some cash. Sometimes you see a custom car, and you know 'that's a Hot Wheels,' Benedict said. Contact Eric D. Lawrence: elawrence@ Become a subscriber. Manitoba Métis Federation and Chiefs of Ontario renew calls for government and institutional action in addressing Indigenous identity fraud
WINNIPEG, MB, May 20, 2025 /CNW/ - Last week marked one year since the Chiefs of Ontario (COO) and the Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, co-hosted the Summit on Indigenous Identity Fraud, a landmark gathering that brought together First Nation, Red River Métis, and Inuit Leadership from several regions across the country to begin the discussion on how to collectively address the growing crisis of false claims to Indigenous identity. The Summit, held on May 14-15, 2024, in Winnipeg, MB, was a call to action rooted in the defense of Indigenous sovereignty, the protection of community integrity, and the responsibility to uphold truth and accountability in all institutions. Over the past year, the urgency of this issue has only intensified, as more cases have come to light where groups and individuals falsely claim Indigenous ancestry for personal, professional, or institutional gain. The first Summit proved to be a pivotal moment for Indigenous Nations taking a collaborative approach to address Indigenous Identity fraud. Ontario First Nations and MMF opposed the inclusion of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) in federal Métis self-government legislation, Bill C-53, because the communities represented by MNO did not exist historically and therefore cannot be considered an "Indigenous group". "The Summit and its resolution condemning Bill C-53 as the ultimate reward of Indigenous identity theft at the collective level undoubtedly played a part in the federal government abandoning this legislation last year", said Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict. Going forward, MMF and COO plan to focus on effective measures to counter the threat of identity fraud confronting legitimate Indigenous Nations. Next steps will include discussions on how to address the threat that Indigenous Identity theft poses to major projects such as energy corridors and critical minerals that are being proposed to meet the threat of tariffs hanging over Canada. "We will continue to make it clear to industry and governments that if they hope to advance projects in our territories, entertaining fraudulent groups who are making false claims only poses a risk to the progress of the initiative because of the inevitable strong opposition. We continue to urge governments to ensure they are negotiating and signing agreements with legitimate Indigenous Nations", said Regional Chief Benedict. Next steps will also include discussions about the Métis National Council Expert Panel Final Report that was released in April 2025. The Expert Panel was tasked with examining the legitimacy of the so-called "historic Métis communities" in Ontario. MMF and COO both effectively dismissed the findings of the final report and are of the position that the Expert Panel was incorrect in its conclusion that the MNO communities are "an integral part of the Métis Nation" and that there were significant problems with the process that cause skepticism from the very start. "The outcome of this report was never in question," said MMF President David Chartrand, "When the 'expert panel' was proposed in 2021, we already knew what the findings would be, as did those commissioning it… Their objective has always been clear - to wave a magic wand and create a new people. We know who we are, as do the First Nations of Ontario, and there is simply no room for MNO to create a new people." Believe in Yourself; Believe in Métis. The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the democratically elected National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are a distinct Indigenous Nation and People and Canada's Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.

Benedict Cumberbatch wears arm sling with tux at Cannes Film Festival, turns injury into chic style statement
Benedict Cumberbatch attended the 78th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, for the screening of his upcoming film The Phoenician Scheme. The Wes Anderson-directed movie also stars other A-listers like Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe and more. Benedict walked the red carpet in a formalwear that's timelessly classic and needs no introduction, but with one twist. Let's decode what the Sherlock star wore at Cannes. ALSO READ: Pedro Pascal's tank top look at Cannes has internet swooning over his sculpted biceps: 'Pedro's arms!' Benedict Cumberbatch attended the premiere of the film with his wife, Sophie Hunter. He wore the most classic of all formal menswear, a sharp and suave black tuxedo, complete with a neat, white shirt and bowtie. He was seen wearing a black arm sling, possibly due to an injury. But he didn't let this setback interfere with his red carpet look. A clever styling move was at play here, as the arm sling effortlessly blended with his outfit, seamlessly matching the entire ensemble. Made from the same black fabric as his blazer, the sling was carefully pinned to his shoulder. Some may squirm at the idea of wearing a medical accessory on the red carpet, worry about how it might clash with the outfit, sticking out like a sore thumb. But Benedict owned it, turning this setback into a chic style statement. Meanwhile, Benedict's wife, Sophie, was seen in an orange off-shoulder gown with a sculpted waistline, creating an interesting silhouette. The Cannes Film Festival red carpet has witnessed several interesting styles over the years, from nude fashion's barely there dresses to gown trains sweeping the entire red carpet. While fashion is subjective and open to interpretation, Cannes rolled out rules to maintain a certain level of decorum and practicality on the red carpet. So, Cannes tweaked its dress code and banned nudity on the red carpet on the grounds of decency. Along with naked dressing, long trains were also prohibited, citing practical reasons.
