House committee passes bill to establish interparliamentary dialogue among S. Korea, US, Japan
A US House committee passed a bill Tuesday to establish an interparliamentary trilateral dialogue among South Korea, the United States and Japan as part of efforts to deepen cooperation in tackling shared challenges in the Indo-Pacific. The House Foreign Affairs Committee endorsed the US-Japan-ROK Trilateral Cooperation Act aimed at creating permanent channels of communication and coordination among the three countries' legislative bodies, according to the office of Rep. Ami Bera, ranking member of the subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific. "As we face growing threats in the Indo-Pacific, now is the time to invest in our closest alliances rooted in democratic principles," Bera said in a statement. "This bill creates a permanent forum for lawmakers from the United States, Japan, and South Korea to meet regularly, exchange ideas, and coordinate on challenges ranging from maritime security and economic growth to safeguarding democratic institutions," he added. The lawmaker said the legislative effort builds on the momentum from the first standalone trilateral summit that the leaders of the three countries held at Camp David in Maryland in August 2023 to strengthen three-way cooperation. Bera introduced the bill, while Reps. Joe Wilson, Mike Kelly, Joaquin Castro, Adrian Smith and the late Gerry Connolly co-led the legislation.

These apps alert us 15-20 minutes in advance about potential missile attacks, giving us time to reach the nearest bunker. If the radar signals a potential threat, a siren goes off and we have to run to the shelter within 90 seconds. Most of the times we are staying in the bunker just below our dormitory," said Bera, a native of Salboni in West Bengal's West Midnapore district. Despite the challenges, Bera praised the Israeli missile warning system, saying, "The Israelis are very used to these things. Thirty per cent of the missiles do fall to the ground, but their system is very high-tech. We can order food and there are general stores open nearby. If I hear a missile, I can reach the shelter in 10 minutes."advertisementThe student shared his experience of a recent missile attack that hit a place three to four kilometres away from his location. "We didn't hear the sound, but we saw the visuals of the attack. It hit a very important place in the city of Tel Aviv. There was no special damage, but it's natural to feel worried," he the fear, Bera said that life in Tel Aviv is slowly returning to normal. Union asks for more rakes, personnel for Purple, Orange Lines
Kolkata: The Pragatisil Sramik Karmachari Union has urged Metro Railway to add rakes and traffic personnel for the Purple and Orange lines, which are set to extend operations now that they are equipped with the advanced signalling system. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On behalf of the INTTUC-affiliated Metro workers' union, general secretary Samir Bera wrote to Metro's chief operations manager. With no fresh recruitment and staff members continuously being transferred out of the North-South (Blue) line, the situation is worse for the truncated Purple (Joka-Majerhat) and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) lines. "The launch of the Yellow Line and the Green Line's last leg is imminent. We welcome the opening of new lines. Unfortunately, the workforce is dragged from the Blue Line, which is already reeling under an acute staff shortage," wrote Bera. Union vice-president Subhasis Sengupta said, "So many extensions but there aren't enough rakes, motormen, or traffic personnel to operate them." In a report titled "Lone rake pulls Purple Line ops, normal services from today", TOI highlighted the rake and manpower personnel issues. Until April, the Purple line offered 18 services at 50-minute intervals. Following the signalling upgrade, 44 services were added from May 9, and the six-hour services doubled. However, a single rake continued to run up and down the 8-km corridor, while another remained on standby.
