Munroe Bergdorf 'hopeful for Corbyn's new party' as she calls out Labour for no 'backbone'

Munroe Bergdorf has "never been more hopeful" following the announcement of Jeremy Corbyn and Zara Sultana's independent party, but calls on Labour MPs to do better for the trans community Model and trans activist Munroe Bergdoft expressed her disappointment at the Labour party's treatment of trans people in the UK. ‌ At the London Trans+ Pride launch event, she told a panel of activists that the Labour party have "shown who they are and have cemented who they are in history." She later added that she has "a lot to shout at this government, but reasoning with them is fruitless." ‌ In preparation for London Trans+ Pride, set to take place on July 26, Bergdorf joined a panel consisting of London Trans+ Pride founding member Lewis G Burton, BAFTA-winning writer and activist Sukey Venables-Fisher and Trans Kids Deserve Better members, Merlin and Cliff. Instilling hope into trans people nationwide, she said: "Just like other civil rights movements before us, things will come to fruition for our movement and for our lives." ‌ Bergdorf stated she has "never felt so hopeful" after seeing the announcement of Jeremy Corbyn and Zara Sultana's independent party. Earlier this month, Sultana quit Labour and voiced her frustration with the party, saying "Labour has completely failed to improve people's lives." The 31-year-old wrote in a statement posted to X: "Today, after 14 years, I'm resigning from the Labour Party. Jeremy Corbyn and I will co-lead the founding of a new party, with other Independent MPs, campaigners and activists across the country." ‌ Bergdorf admitted that she had considered leaving the UK, but now wants to "stay and fight and see growth and support [Corbyn and Sultana's party]." Corbyn confirmed that "real change is coming" and praised Sultana for helping to build "a real alternative." Whilst the new independent party establishes itself, Bergdorf urged the current Labour government to take action for the transgender community. "To everything single MP in the Labour party on the left; it's time for backbone, it's time to actually do something instead of just talking. Join us, come to trans pride. It's time to show urgency." In April 2024, the court ruled in favour of so-called 'gender critical' volunteer organisation For Women Scotland in their appeal against the Scottish Government's usage of the term 'woman'. Lord Hodge, Lady Rose and Lady Simler gave a joint judgment, with which the other Justices agreed, passing down an unanimous verdict that the term 'woman' used in the Equality Act 2010 refers to biological sex. ‌ Trans charity Gendered Intelligence told the Mirror at the time that they were disappointed at the ruling, and said the judgement is "likely to empower those who want to exclude trans people, but we trust that this remains a small minority." At the London Trans+ Pride panel, Bergdorf called for meaningful trans allyship, stating that "directing traffic, money, support and awareness to services that support us is paramount... If people are going to be allies they need to make it worth it." Help us improve our content by completing the survey below. We'd love to hear from you!

Why is the BBC so obsessed with Munroe Bergdorf?

Can the BBC do anything right? Just days before it messed up spectacularly by failing to cut away from Bob Vylan's offensive performance at Glastonbury, it released a podcast in which activist Munroe Bergdorf told listeners 'how transitioning allowed her to discover love'. The BBC, the former broadcaster that's now a HR department with some channels attached, is increasingly ladling up such tatty 'content'. But this podcast episode – part of the 'How To Be In Love' series – marks a new, desperate low. 'We are constantly told that trans people are an abomination,' says Bergdorf. Really? Hosted by the amiable and intelligent Rylan Clark, whose wit and charm are, frankly, being frittered away on such rubbish, Bergdorf – who was born a man but has now 'transitioned' – appears to claim to be a lesbian, on the basis of having fallen in love with another man who also claims to be a woman. Yes, you read that right. 'I never thought I would fall in love with another woman,' Bergdorf tells Rylan, who listens with an admirably straight face that is a picture to behold. Why are we paying for this? Bergdorf goes on. And on. And on. 'We are constantly told that trans people are an abomination, that we shouldn't even be friends with trans people, that you shouldn't employ trans people,' Bergdorf says, speaking from an alternative universe where that is actually happening. Who exactly is 'constantly telling' us this? Who is saying we shouldn't be friends with trans people? And which companies have said they won't give them a job? There aren't any, because if there were, they'd soon find themselves in court. As Debbie Hayton has pointed out in The Spectator repeatedly, trans people are not being routinely persecuted in Britain. The Equality Act protects these individuals from discrimination based on their gender. Yet claims about trans people being persecuted have become louder in the wake of the Supreme Court's verdict earlier this year, when judges said that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. That decision finally restored some much-needed common sense to the gender debate. I've been stewed like a prune in this discussion for nigh on a decade, and all I've seen is women demanding their basic, sex-based rights and safeguards from men – and being given the cold shoulder. Finally, those brave women have been backed up by the judges. But, despite what some might like to suggest, it didn't lead to a pogrom of trans people. Yet the fact that the BBC was willing to broadcast Bergdorf's rant – coming hot on the heels of the the Corporation allowing a woman to appear on its gay dating show I Kissed A Boy – shows that it has some catching up to do. No special dispensations have been removed from trans people in Britain. But the BBC loves a victim, and at the sight of a picturesque character like Bergdorf, the bigwigs down at Broadcasting House's tails start wagging like the clappers. Bergdorf looks like a gay man's idea of a glamorous lady that straight men would desire. But we shouldn't forget that Bergdorf – a former Labour advisor, of course – once claimed that 'the white race is the most violent and oppressive force of nature on Earth'; called a Twitter follower a 'hairy barren lesbian; and spoke of wanting to 'gay bash' a television star. What's all that about? And why does the BBC think anyone cares what Bergdorf thinks after saying those things? Bergdorf's book, Transitional, was marketed as a 'landmark manifesto from the pioneering activist and model'. I've had the misfortune of having read it, and let me tell you this: there's nothing 'landmark' about this book. Although it is admirably frank, I'll give Bergdorf that – it was more disturbing than I expected. What emerges is a picture of Bergdorf that also comes across in the interview with Clark: nobody loves Bergdorf more than Bergdorf, and nobody hates Bergdorf more than Bergdorf. Certainly, nobody else is anywhere near as interested in Bergdorf as Bergdorf. And this is who the BBC is turning to for advice on relationships? Do yourself a favour and read the horoscopes: you'll find more wisdom there. The BBC has not afforded anything like the same welcome to the detractors of the LGBTQ+ movement as it has done to the likes of Bergdorf. Why aren't Helen Joyce, Kathleen Stock or the authors of The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht being invited regularly on Woman's Hour? I'd happily pay my licence fee if they did. Instead, they think giving a platform to Bergdorf is a better investment of our cash. This gender gibberish is, fingers crossed, coming to an end, but the BBC – another thing hopefully nearing its demise – is still rolling along with it. Let them go down together.

Model Munroe Bergdorf talks the magic of loving another trans woman

Munroe Bergdorf has experienced the magic of love, and it took another trans woman to show it to her. Bergdorf, a history-making model, writer, and trans activist, opened up about her love life on the podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love with host Rylan Clark. She said that the most significant thing in her life that changed her view about love was the first time she fell in love with a woman, and specifically a trans woman. Discussing her relationship with her ex-girlfriend, Ava, who has passed away, Bergdorf said it was the first time she felt true love. "Because I realized how much love was what I thought it should be, rather than what it actually is," Bergdorf said. "And I never thought I would fall in love with another woman, especially a trans woman, because I hadn't processed or allowed myself to understand that I, as a trans woman, deserve love." "We're constantly told that trans people are, like, an abomination. That people shouldn't even be friends with trans people, we shouldn't employ trans people, we shouldn't let their kids near trans people. All these awful things that ultimately make you feel unlovable," she continued. "So, then, when another trans woman comes along, you've got all of this internalized hatred oftentimes. Then that whole relationship opened my eyes. And I was like, 'Of course she deserves love, so of course I deserve love, and then why can't we love each other?'" That relationship also expanded her idea of her sexuality, as she had only been with men before. Bergdorf said that the relationship made her realize that any time a man showed her attention or affection, she would feel lovable. She was seeking that male validation instead of finding actual love. Bergdorf said that nowadays, she identifies as queer, but doesn't want a label to limit herself. "I don't really feel the need to define myself by a box, because I feel like you end up becoming box-shaped oftentimes," she said. Bergdorf recently released the her book Talk To Me: How to Talk About the Things That Matter, and has an upcoming documentary, Love & Rage: Munroe Bergdorf, coming out July 15. The documentary takes an intimate look at her life and serves as a rallying cry for trans rights. Watch the Love & Rage trailer below. Trans model named in list of ‘women defining Britain'

The honour comes after the Supreme Court ruling that said, for the purpose of the Equality Act 2010, 'women' refers to biological sex and not self-identified gender. Vogue has stated that this ruling 'further motivating gender critical activists' who believe that biological sex and not preferred identification define what constitutes a woman. These include JK Rowling, the Harry Potter author, who has been outspoken in her belief that spaces for women should be reserved for those who are biologically female. The selection of Bergdorf for the Vogue 25 follows a number of instances in which honours for women have been handed to those who are not biologically female. In 2024, Bergdorf was chosen by UN Women UK to be its ' UK champion '. Later that year, the BBC named Brigitte Baptiste, the transgender Colombian scientist, in its annual list of 100 inspiring women. In 2023, Rukshana Kapali, the Nepalese transgender activist, was chosen for the list following a legal fight to change gender officially from male to female. In 2024, Cannes Film Festival handed its best actress award to a trans woman for the first time. Karla Sofia Gascon, 52, starred in the Mexican musical comedy Emily Perez, a film that was lauded by critics, about a man transitioning to escape vengeful criminals. The Spanish performer was named best actress alongside co-stars who were honoured as an ensemble.

Presley Oldham's Pearls Pop Up at Bergdorf Goodman

Presley Oldham's pearls are popping up at Bergdorf Goodman. The department store has snapped up the Brooklyn-based designer's colorful line of organic pearl and glass beaded 'compost' jewelry for the summer. Starting Thursday through the end of July, Oldham will be situated on 5f, Bergdorf's contemporary fifth floor. 'It does feel kismet,' he said, given the launch date coincides with his brand's fifth anniversary. 'The array of jewelry they curate is unlike any other in the world, and I feel so lucky to now be included,' he added. Bergdorf will also be the first to stock his spring 2025 collection, which Oldham debuted as a CFDA award nominee with a presentation during New York Fashion Week. Additionally, the jeweler sourced unique pearls to create three exclusive one-of-a-kind necklaces. 'One style is made with luscious lavender coin pearls the size of quarters, another is made with blush pink iridescent pearls that look like little bubblegum pieces,' he said. 'Then there are these amazing winged baroque pearls that are the most beautiful, organic cloud shapes you could dream of.' Retailing for $2,800, these are at the top end of Oldham's line, which is typically priced below $1,000. Oldham has been working to elevate the line with an eye toward finer materials recently and, for Bergdorf, that meant switching older styles from sterling silver to 14-karat yellow gold fill, which he said 'brings a lovely warmth to the collection.' In return, Bergdorf is offering him a warm welcome. Andrew Mandell, its divisional merchandise manager for decorative home and jewelry, praised Oldham for 'bringing an entirely new perspective to jewelry' through his 'confluence of wit, optimism and craft.' On May 9, Bergdorf will host a cocktail event in Oldham's honor as the kickoff to Mother's Day gifting. 'Celebrating the launch over Mother's Day felt like the perfect fit for the entire family to come shopping,' Oldham said. 'Jewelry is always an heirloom item that can be passed down to future generations, and hopefully shoppers are able to create a special Bergdorf memory of their own when purchasing a piece of mine.'
