Bernadette Reyes has something to say about the negative comments she has been receiving online. The GMA Integrated News broadcaster shared screenshots of netizens commenting about her appearance and voice during her typhoon coverage. On Facebook, Bernadette wrote, 'It takes a brave spirit to weather the storm but it takes an even bigger heart to wish others well kahit minumura at nilalait na ang buong pagkatao.' 'Maaring hindi ako maganda sa panlabas sa inyong paningin pero hindi nyo ito kayang sabihin if only you know the kind of person that I am,' she added. Bernadette told netizens who spread memes about her, editing photos and captions 'to make me look bad' and those who 'ginawa akong katatawanan,' that she still wishes they are safe well during this season. Watch: Man pops the question at top of Shandon, replicating fiancée's parents 40 years ago
Wedding bells are set to ring out after a man popped the question on top of Cork's landmark Shandon steeple where his fiancée's parents got engaged four decades ago. Scot Joshua Rowan and his girlfriend, Bernadette Shannon, flew from Edinburgh to Cork on Tuesday morning for what Bernadette thought was going to be a short city break visiting family on the city's northside. Bernadette's mother, Margaret, was raised in sight of the city's famous St Anne's Church in Shandon, and often heard the story of how her late dad, Bernard, proposed to her mother on the famous church tower in 1979. But it never dawned on her the same would happen to her. Joshua had other ideas. He had spent weeks working on a surprise proposal and planned to pop the big question at a Zach Bryan concert in Dublin this weekend, even asking his future mother-in-law for permission to ask for her daughter's hand in marriage earlier this week. The couple set off sightseeing in Cork City on Tuesday, and visited Shandon to ring the bells and climb its tower to take in the magnificent city views. Bernadette said even that was an emotional moment for her, knowing she was following in her parents' footsteps. Joshua, a stone mason, said he was quite enamoured with the tower's wonderful stonework and almost forgot what he was planning to do. 'But the weather was too good, and I recalled Margaret's story of her proposal on top of Shandon and I think the stars aligned. To be honest, I've been planning it almost since the day I met Bernadette. I knew she was the one,' he said. He had hidden the ring in Bernadette's bag, and as they stood atop the Shandon tower, he rummaged in her bag for a bottle of water, before whipping out the ring, dropping to one knee and, with the city's skyline as the backdrop, popping the question. Stunned and delighted, she said yes. For Bernadette, it was a moment laden with emotion and nostalgia. Her dad died just six years ago, two weeks shy of his 40th wedding anniversary. Margaret said he would have been so proud. 'When they came back, it was just so emotional. I cried, but it is so lovely, it just hit me hard they got engaged on Shandon,' she said. 'They had a ring, we didn't when we got engaged there in 1979 but we went into town afterwards and bought the ring there and then.' She said Joshua shares many of her late husband's traits, and his decision to ask her for permission before asking her daughter to marry him was a real sign of respect. Bernadette, who moved to Edinburgh two years ago and works in a dental lab, met Joshua in a pub. They went for a walk a few days later and she said she fell in love with his dog first, and with him afterwards. They have been inseparable since. They have yet to set a wedding date or venue. It's hard not to love a doughnut. Sure, sugar-coated rounds of fried dough have little to no nutritional value (save for the odd hit of fruity jelly), but when it comes to a treat, it's hard to beat a good old doughnut. Various reports claim Canadians to be the most avid doughnut eaters on the planet, which will come as no surprise to anyone who found themselves standing in the massive lineups at the new Krispy Kreme location that opened in Calgary last week. Article content While Krispy Kreme has re-ignited doughnut mania in Calgary – and for good reason, those original glazed doughnuts are absolutely delicious, especially when they're hot off the conveyor belt – those looking to frequent a doughnut biz with more local roots also have plenty of choice. Local doughnut bakeries are often more temporary than a typical full-service restaurant, but these days, we seem to have a solid collection of options in the city. Article content Article content Article content While it's not fair to play favourites, if you're going to try one independent doughnut brand in Calgary, it should be Doughnut Party. This company is officially based in Edmonton, but partners Simon Underwood and Matthew Garrett now have two locations in Calgary (at 1125 9th Ave. S.E. in Inglewood and 2205 33rd Ave. S.W. in Marda Loop) and spend a good chunk of their time in our city. The party started back in 2012 with Garrett selling his doughnuts in an Edmonton farmer's market, gaining a dedicated fan base for his extra-large and extra-flavourful treats. The company's growth has happened fairly organically, and Garrett's focus is still on creating doughnuts that play on childhood memories while packing a lot of complex flavour. Article content Article content 'Our menu is inspired by pop culture, by travel, and nostalgia,' Garrett says. 'We want to take pieces from people's histories and reinvent them in our own way without making them seem inaccessible.' Article content Article content Doughnut Party's menu changes monthly, but June's selections include works of doughy art like the Alberta Rose fritter studded with rhubarb, apple, cardamom and rosewater; the Bernadette with lavender, rosemary, chocolate and sea salt; and the Hot Mama Long Jane, coated with strawberry, wasabi, and black sesame; as well as the Oilers-themed 'Connor McDoughnut' (give them a break, they're from Edmonton). A six-pack of doughnuts should keep a family of four partying for a couple of days. Article content But Doughnut Party isn't the only celebration of fried dough in town. Hoopla offers superior versions of classic glazed and filled doughnuts, all suitable for dunking should you choose. Since Phil and Sebastian are always aiming for perfection, the dough recipe recently got a tweak to make the doughnuts softer and moister, with cake doughnuts also added to the mix.

(via CNN Newsource Jason Sudeikis has broken his silence to say some lovely things about his late uncle, actor George Wendt. The 'Cheers' star died last month at age 76. Sudeikis made an appearance over the weekend at a fundraiser for Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was asked about Wendt. 'With regard to my uncle George, I mean, there's that old saying of like, 'Don't meet your heroes,' usually 'cause 'they let you down,' I assume, is the back half of that statement,' Sudeikis said in a video captured and posted by KSHB 41. 'But he's not one of those people.' The 'Ted Lasso' star said his uncle was 'as fun and kind and as warm as any character he played on television or in films.' 'He was an incredible influence to me,' Sudeikis said. 'Both as someone that blazes the trail, being from the Midwest and teaching me that acting was a career you could actually have, if you really care about it.' That included demonstrating having 'a career where you could meet the love of your life, like his wife, a.k.a. permanent girlfriend, Bernadette,' referencing Wendt's almost 50 year marriage. Family and community were important to his uncle, Sudeikis said. 'He also always kept connected to his family, to his roots, both in Chicago, of course, where he's from, but then also the time he spent here,' he said. He joked about Wendt's fondness for a bar called Mike's, where Sudeikis said his uncle spent a good bit of time. 'It was all in preparation of a job that we all know him for, 'Cheers,'' he said.
