The fire destroyed part of one subway compartment and caused smoke damage to two others, with total losses estimated at 330 million won. Seoul Metro told Yonhap News Agency that it plans to pursue legal action against the suspected arsonist-currently in police custody-to seek compensation. It also said it will review why real-time closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from inside the train failed to transmit to the control centre during the incident. A total of 23 people were transported to hospitals for smoke inhalation, while an additional 129 passengers received on-site treatment for minor injuries. Meanwhile, police are expected to request an arrest warrant from the prosecution against the suspect - whose identity has not been released - later in the day. - Bernama-Yonhap

SEOUL/POHANG, May 29 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- A South Korean Navy patrol aircraft with four crew members on board crashed into a mountain in the southeastern city of Pohang on Thursday, Yonhap news agency quoted the authorities. The crash occurred at approximately 1.50 pm (local time), shortly after the P-3 maritime patrol plane departed for a training mission from a naval air base in the city. 'Due to unidentified reasons, a P-3 aircraft that took off from Pohang at 1.43 pm crashed nearby,' the Navy said in a notice to the media.

SEOUL, May 27 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- RM, the leader of K-pop supergroup BTS, has clinched the Favourite K-pop Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), one of the three major music award shows in the United States. The award was presented during the ceremony held at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Monday (U.S. time), Yonhap news agency reported according to the AMAs' official website. The Favorite K-pop Artist category was introduced in 2022, with BTS winning the inaugural trophy. RM's solo win this year continues the group's legacy at the AMAs. bootstrap slideshow BLACKPINK's Rose was nominated in the Collaboration of the Year category for her track 'APT.' with global pop icon Bruno Mars but did not take home the prize. The AMAs returned this year after a three-year hiatus, with the last event held in 2022. BTS previously won awards at the ceremony for five consecutive years, from 2018 to 2022.

Hyundai Named Title Sponsor of ASEAN Football Championship from 2026

SEOUL, May 26 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- Hyundai Motor Co has entered into a sponsorship agreement with the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) to become the title sponsor of Southeast Asia's leading men's national football tournament starting in 2026, Yonhap news agency reported. The agreement was signed at Hyundai's manufacturing plant in Bekasi, West Java, Indonesia. Under the deal, the biennial tournament will be renamed the ASEAN Hyundai Cup beginning in 2026, the company said Monday. bootstrap slideshow Previously known as the ASEAN Championship, the tournament has undergone several rebrandings in line with changing sponsorships. It was formerly titled the Tiger Cup, Suzuki Cup, and most recently the Mitsubishi Electric Cup. In addition to the ASEAN Hyundai Cup, Hyundai will also sponsor three other regional football competitions from 2025 to 2029. These include the ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup, the ASEAN Women's MSIG Serenity Cup, and the ASEAN U-23 Championship. Hyundai Motor began its involvement in global football sponsorship with the FIFA World Cup in 1999. The company has since expanded its presence, most recently becoming an official partner of the Copa Libertadores, South America's top-tier club competition.

Chief Strategy Officer of OpenAI, Jason Kwon told reporters in Seoul on Monday that the company has officially set up a Korean unit and will soon launch an office in the capital. 'Our next international office is going to be here in Seoul. bootstrap slideshow 'We are going to open it in the coming months and start hiring a local team to advance our efforts and support local users, customers and partners,' said Kwon. The Seoul office will be OpenAI's third in Asia, following offices in Tokyo and Singapore. The move forms part of OpenAI's broader global strategy, which has seen it open 11 international offices in major cities including Paris, Brussels, London, Dublin and Tokyo. OpenAI, the operator of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has already formed partnerships with several major South Korean companies, including Kakao Corp, Krafton Inc and mobile carrier SK Telecom Co, in areas such as AI development and data infrastructure. Kwon said South Korea was selected as a key partner country due to its high level of engagement with OpenAI's platforms. 'South Korea ranks among the top 10 countries for both ChatGPT users and developers using OpenAI platforms,' he said, adding that the country also has the second-largest number of paid ChatGPT subscribers globally, behind the United States (US).
