Biden 'optimistic' about his cancer, thinks he can 'beat this'

Biden mentioned that he is currently taking 'a pill' but did not provide further details about his treatment. – AFP photo WASHINGTON (May 31): Nearly two weeks after revealing his prostate cancer diagnosis, former US president Joe Biden said on Friday that he's optimistic about his recovery. 'All the folks are very optimistic,' Biden told reporters on the sidelines of a public appearance in his home state of Delaware. He confirmed that he had begun treatment. 'My expectation is that we're going to be able to beat this,' the 82-year-old said about his illness, reported German news agency dpa. Biden mentioned that he is currently taking 'a pill' but did not provide further details about his treatment. His office had announced the diagnosis on May 18, stating that it was a more aggressive and advanced, but treatable, form of the disease. Biden left office in January as the oldest president in US history. He had originally planned to run again for the Democrats in the 2024 election, but during the campaign experienced frequent lapses and a disasterous performance against Republican Donald Trump in a debate. That raised increasing doubts about his physical and mental fitness. The debate over his condition eventually led Biden to withdraw from the race. Instead, his vice president, Kamala Harris, ran for office but lost the election to Trump. – Bernama-dpa

Car maker Volvo plans to cut around 3,000 office jobs worldwide

FRANKFURT, May 26 (Bernama-dpa): Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Cars plans to cut thousands of administrative jobs as part of cost-cutting measures, the firm announced on Monday, reported German news agency dpa. A total of 3,000 jobs will be lost worldwide, according to the Gothenburg-based company, which is controlled by the Chinese Geely Group. The figure represents around 15% of all office-based jobs, with the majority of these in Sweden. In a statement, in which he announced talks with unions, Volvo chief executive Hakan Samuelsson said some tough decisions had to be made. "The automotive industry is in the midst of a difficult phase," he said. In order to overcome this, costs must be reduced structurally. Volvo announced at the end of April, when it reported weak first-quarter figures, that jobs would be cut and that a total of 18 billion Swedish kronor (just under US$1.9 billion) would be saved through other measures. The package will initially involve special costs of around 1.5 billion kronor, which will be booked in the second quarter. Volvo focused early on pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and has suffered from high costs for battery materials in recent years. Samuelsson, who had previously led Volvo for many years, took over the helm again at the beginning of April after former boss Jim Rowan was suddenly forced to leave. Recently, the sales environment has become tougher and the company is currently unable to provide a detailed financial forecast due to uncertainty over US tariffs. The company will also focus more strongly on plug-in hybrids in the future because its ramp-up of pure electric cars has stalled. In the first quarter, the share of pure electric cars at Volvo was 19 per cent, two percentage points lower than a year earlier. - Bernama-dpa TAGS:

EU Commission Unveils Growth Forecast As Trade Fight Shakes Economies

BRUSSELS, May 19 (Bernama-dpa) -- The European Commission will release its spring economic forecast on Monday, with particular attention paid to Germany's stalled recovery and the broader impact of trans-Atlantic trade tensions, reported German news agency dpa. In its most recent forecast in November, the EU's executive arm projected Germany's gross domestic product (GDP) to edge up by 0.7 per cent this year. However, the German government said late last month it expects the economy to flatline in 2025. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also anticipates no growth this year for Europe's largest economy. bootstrap slideshow Once envied across Europe, Germany's economy has suffered two consecutive years of recession as inflation, high energy prices and dropping exports weighed on businesses. Zooming out, the commission had forecast in November EU-wide growth of 1.5 per cent this year, with a slightly lower 1.3 per cent for the 20-member eurozone. But the eruption of the trade fight with the United States is now expected to dampen growth. The US has imposed a 10 per cent universal tariff on all imports to the US, but it has paused additional country-specific tariffs beyond this baseline for most trading partners, including the EU. This prompted Brussels to suspend its planned counter-tariffs. "We see these US tariffs as a factor that will have a negative impact on the EU economy and the US economy itself, and will also have negative global repercussions," EU Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis said recently when asked to preview the spring forecast. --BERNAMA-dpa

Lufthansa Jet Flown By Autopilot After Pilot Faints In Cockpit

MADRID, May 18 (Bernama-dpa) -- A Lufthansa flight was flown by autopilot when the copilot, alone in the cockpit as the pilot had stepped away to use the bathroom, fainted, Spanish investigators said in a report about an incident last year that was released on Saturday. The Airbus A321 flew without a pilot in charge for 10 minutes, the Spanish accident investigation authority CIAIAC said of the flight on February 17, 2024, from Frankfurt to Seville, reported German news agency dpa. Lufthansa confirmed it was aware of the report and said its flight safety department had conducted an extensive internal investigation into the incident. The company did not disclose the results of its investigation, stating, "We ask for your understanding that we will not comment beyond the investigation report."
