Steam for Chromebooks is reportedly being discontinued
The dream of Chromebooks that double as gaming laptops appears to be on its last legs. 9to5Google reports that Google is ending support for Steam for Chromebooks starting January 1, 2026. Porting the application launcher was part of an extended push from the company to make Chromebooks a place to play games. Companies like ASUS and Acer announced and released gaming Chromebooks, but the idea never seemed to catch on. Google's plan to retire Steam for Chromebooks was discovered when 9to5Google tried to install the launcher on a new laptop. "The Steam for Chromebook Beta program will conclude on January 1st, 2026," a new notice reads when you download Steam. "After this date, games installed as part of the Beta will no longer be available to play on your device. We appreciate your participation in and contribution to learnings from the beta program, which will inform the future of Chromebook gaming." Engadget has contacted Google and Valve for confirmation that Steam for Chromebooks is being discontinued. We'll update this article if we hear back. Reports that Steam would eventually be available on ChromeOS started as far back as 2020. The joint effort to port the launcher to Chromebooks was a surprise announcement at GDC 2022. Google released a Steam alpha that March, which ultimately worked better than expected. A beta version of the app came a few months later in November, adding support for several new Chromebooks. The app has existed in beta since then, without any major updates from Google or Valve. One reason Google could be giving up is that the number of games that can actually run on Chromebooks is limited, thanks to the underpowered CPUs and integrated graphics that most ChromeOS devices use. Valve's Proton compatibility software — which helps Windows games run on the Linux-based Steam Deck — is technically available for Chromebooks, but it can't make up for a lack of processing power. Without Steam, using either NVIDIA GeForce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming is the best option for running modern console and PC games on your Chromebook. ChromeOS can also runs Android apps, but then you have to be comfortable playing what you can get from the Play Store.

It's official: More Galaxy devices will soon get One UI 8
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung is expanding its One UI 8 beta program to include devices such as the Galaxy S24 series, Z Fold 6, and Z Flip 6 in select regions starting next week. Samsung took its sweet time rolling out One UI 7 to its device lineup. One UI 8 was off to a better start, but users have started getting impatient as days stretch into weeks with no new info. Only the new Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Z Flip FE have stable One UI 8, while the relatively still-new Galaxy S25 series has One UI 8 betas. Finally, Samsung is ready to announce the next phase of One UI 8 expansion, as it has shared details on the rollout of the beta and stable update to more devices. Samsung has announced the expansion of its One UI 8 beta program. Starting next week, One UI 8 betas will be available for the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in India, Korea, the UK, and the US. In the following month, the One UI 8 beta program will roll out to even more devices, including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy A36 5G, Galaxy A55 5G, Galaxy A35 5G, and Galaxy A54. Further, starting in September, One UI 8 stable will expand to more Galaxy devices beyond the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Samsung didn't mention which devices, but it's easy to guess that the rollout will likely start with the Galaxy S25 series. Later in the year, One UI 8 Watch will also expand its availability beyond the Galaxy Watch 8 series. This is a developing story. Please check back later for more details. Follow

One UI 8 Watch beta introduces a smarter app layout for your Galaxy smartwatch
Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR Samsung has started rolling out the OneUI 8 watch beta for Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra users in the US. • The update adds a Personalized Apps screen that highlights frequently used apps at the top of the Apps screen/app drawer on your Watch. Users can also choose a List view of their apps, making app access more intuitive and organized. Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 8 Watch beta to Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra users in the US. Users who have enrolled in the beta program are getting the update delivered to their watch, and through them, we are getting our first glimpse of what's coming next to Samsung's smartwatches. One of the bigger and most noticeable changes with the update is the Personalized Apps Screen, which now displays your most frequently used watch apps if you want it to. The One UI 8 Watch changelog mentions this change: Personalized Apps screen: Features apps now appear at the top of your Apps screen to give you quick access to the apps you need the most. Apps will be featured based on how often you use them and other usage patterns. You can also view your apps as a list with names instead of only icons. Telegram user Dalgeishgx shared what this change looks like on their end, and you can see it compared to the current One UI 7 Watch (first screenshot) firmware settings: One UI 7 Watch - Apps screen One UI 8 Watch - Personalized Apps screen One UI 8 Watch - Personalized Apps screen - List view In the second screenshot, you can see the new 'Show featured apps based on usage' toggle, which will change the Featured apps to your frequently used apps. Further, the third screenshot shows the View option, which can now be changed into List view to give us a list of apps once you cross over the Featured apps. This should make accessing apps easier for users who found the icons difficult to follow, as the List view appears to be alphabetically sorted. All in all, most users will likely appreciate these changes as they put your most frequently used apps right at your fingertips. It should also sort the mess of icons that appear in the Grid view — I found them confusing too when I first used a Galaxy Watch 4, and I could have certainly used the List view more at the time.
