Driver of SUV involved in hit-and-run in Bethel Park tells police he needed to buy a toothbrush

A man has been charged after a hit-and-run in Bethel Park left a motorcyclist with road rash. According to the criminal complaint, on Wednesday, police were called to Logan Road for a reported hit-and-run between an SUV and a motorcycle. Once they arrived, they spoke with the victim, who was riding his motorcycle on Logan Road when a red SUV attempted to turn left. The operator of the bike said he hit the brake and swerved left to avoid colliding with the SUV, but ultimately, the SUV continued its turn, hit the bike, and knocked the victim onto the ground. The motorcycle ended up in the front yard of a home on Logan Road. After the crash, the victim stood up, yelled at the driver, and stood at the front of the SUV. However, the driver refused to stop, telling the victim he was sorry and couldn't stop because he had somewhere to be. The SUV accelerated and hit the victim, causing him to roll down the driver's side of the SUV and sending him onto the road. He gave the description of the SUV to the police, who were able to identify it later on Library Road and pulled the driver over, saying that his vehicle matched the description and had observable damage. The driver was identified as Anil Rivedy, and he admitted to being in the crash, as well as saying that he had somewhere to be. He told police that he was on his way to Shop-n-Save to buy a toothbrush, as the reason he was unable to stop. Rivedy is now facing charges of accidents involving death or personal injury, failing to stop and render aid, aggravated assault by vehicle, and other moving violations.

Walmart purchases Bethel Park Shopping Center for $39.6 million

Walmart has purchased the Bethel Park Shopping Center, where it already operates a store, for $39.6 million. Real estate records for Allegheny County show that an affiliate of Walmart called Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust purchased the nearly 22 acre lot earlier this month. The plaza is currently occupied by Walmart and by Giant Eagle along with a Pep Boys store, a Firestone Complete Auto Care store, a Chinese restaurant, a Great Clips store, and a Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard location. The purchase of the Bethel Park plaza comes months after Walmart, the world's largest retailer, also purchased the Monroeville Mall property for around $35 million. Walmart has purchased the Bethel Park Shopping Center located along Library Road for $39.6 million. The plaza currently is occupied by Walmart and by Giant Eagle. KDKA Photojournalist Brian Smithmyer The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that a Walmart spokesperson says there shouldn't be any changes to the center, adding that the company wants to continue to do business in Bethel Park and that purchasing the plaza provides the best opportunity to serve customers on a long-term basis. "Walmart owns most of its store properties and generally prefers to do so," the spokesperson said. It's unclear if the sale of the property could impact the operations of Giant Eagle.

Massive water main break hits Bethel Park neighborhood

It's cleanup time in the Bethel Park neighborhood after a water main break caused a mess Thursday night. Crews on Friday were working on restoring houses on Logan Road after the massive water main break. It's been an interesting time for residents. "That one there was goofy," said neighbor Richard Ferry. "Usually they go straight up in the air and follow the wind," he added. Not this one. It spouted right on top of a house. Disaster Restoration Services were on the scene Friday. (Photo provided by neighbor) "We'll sweep up the heavy stuff, and then we'll pressure wash the lighter stuff," said DRS production manager Lenny Smith. The scene at Bethel Park was almost old hat for these guys. "We're used to it, we see it all the time," Smith said. Smith says the house that took the direct hit bore the brunt of the damage. "There's a lot of ceiling damage on all the floors and insulation that we're pulling out," he said. Two homes next door were slightly affected. "The next two are just yard damage," he said. Pennsylvania American Water said around 30 people were without water for a little bit. "I had to use the bathroom about 9 last night. I went to flush it, and there was no water," Ferry said. The water company says service came back around 11 p.m. Thursday. All that's left now is a mess. "There's nothing they can do or we can do about it. We're just here to help them," Smith said. But even with that, there are at least some positives. "Now I can get a shower," Ferry said. Smith says he expects all the work here to be done sometime this weekend.
