CM Nayab Singh Saini leads Gurgaon Run, promotes ‘1 nation, 1 election'
Gurgaon: Making an impassioned plea to youths and citizens to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'One nation, one election', Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini led Gurgaon Run on Sunday. The CM said the initiative — "a national interest agenda" — aims to unify electoral processes to ensure cost savings, effective governance and "uninterrupted development". Speaking at the Leisure Valley parking area, Saini said, "This is not just a political reform, it's a democratic movement. Simultaneous elections will reduce administrative fatigue, save public resources and allow governance to continue without frequent electoral interruptions." He urged youths to create awareness in colleges, villages and on digital platforms. Successful public movements such as Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao originated from Haryana and became a national campaign, Saini said, calling for public participation in promoting the "One nation, one election" concept. He condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in (Jammu and Kashmir), saying the ongoing Tiranga Yatras across the country reflected India's unity and patriotic strength. Minister of state for sports Gaurav Gautam said frequent elections disrupt development and exhaust public funds. "The campaign is a step toward a streamlined, focused and stronger India," he said. Industry minister Rao Narbir Singh, Pataudi MLA Bimla Chaudhary, Gurgaon MLA Mukesh Sharma and city mayor Raj Rani Malhotra attended the event. BJP national secretary Om Prakash Dhankhar and state president Mohan Lal Kaushik were also present. Surprise Cricket Match Saini stopped his convoy near Rajiv Chowk to join a group of local youths playing cricket. On his way to the PWD Rest House after Gurgaon Run, Saini stepped onto the field, picked up a bat and played a few shots. He was joined by Rao, Gautam and party state president Mohan Lal Kaushik.

‘Swachh Garima' drive to empower KGBV girls
Lucknow: The state govt launched a 'Swachh Garima' campaign to ensure dignity, self-respect and health for girls studying in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV), a residential set-up for disadvantaged sections. Under this initiative, adolescent girls across all KGBVs will, in a phased manner, receive scientific and practical training on menstrual hygiene, nutrition and their right to communication. Officials at the basic education department said the idea is to eliminate the stigma around natural biological processes and empower girls to live with self-respect and confidence. Basic education minister Sandeep Singh said, "Our goal is not just to help them achieve their dreams but also to dispel myths and social taboos related to health. Through this confluence of dialogue and sensitivity, the girls will lead a life of dignity and remain healthy." Under the campaign, the department initiated 'Sankoch Nahi Samvad Zaruri', an effort to change social mindset. This, said a govt spokesperson, is in line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision to empower women, which needs a strong change in societal attitudes and behaviour. The effort will teach girls that menstruation is not a matter of embarrassment, but a natural bodily function that should be managed hygienically. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Supported by Unicef, teachers will play a key role in its implementation. 1 2 3 4 Vijayapura: National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Kudgi has rolled out its Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2025 in five project-affected villages—Kudgi, Masuti, Golasangi, Telagi, and Muttagi. The initiative will benefit 76 girls, aligning with the central govt's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' programme, and aims to foster gender equality and holistic development. Akshay Hujare, CSR executive, NTPC Kudgi, informed that the workshop commenced on May 21 and will conclude on June 21. "We have selected 76 girl students studying in class 6 from 14 schools in rural areas. Over the course of the workshop, participants will engage in an immersive experience that includes academic sessions, life skills training, yoga sessions, sports, and various co-curricular and extracurricular activities. We are inviting achievers in the region to interact with these students so that they can get motivated. It is not just a workshop, but a transformative journey. By offering a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment, the initiative continues to inspire young girls to grow into confident, capable, and future-ready individuals," he claimed. Hujare said that basics of the students' school subjects will also be covered in the workshop. Bidyanand Jha, executive director, NTPC Kudgi, told TOI that GEM is a flagship CSR project launched in 2018 in the vicinity of NTPC power stations across the country. "It was conferred as the first runner-up in the prestigious 2014 UN Women India (Women's Empowering Principles) award in the 'community engagement and partnership' category. This initiative is implemented in NTPC Kudgi since 2021 by conducting a month's residential workshop for rural girl students. This mission aims to educate, inspire, and empower our young daughters to dream big and achieve even bigger. Through this mission, NTPC aims to contribute to building a more equitable and progressive society," he added. He also asserted that some talented and interested employees of NTPC are also engaged in this workshop. Workshop participants Poornima, Khairunbi, Basamma, Basheera, and other students said that they came to the campus with just the clothes they wore. "As soon as we arrived here, we got a kit with all daily need materials - right from footwear to hair clips. We are also getting benefits of medical, menstrual care, and dental check-up camps. At home, we were least bothered about eating and were deprived of nutritious food. Here, we are getting sufficient and nutritious food. Moreover, our lifestyle has improved with habits like waking up early in the morning. We were never away from our parents and hence we were homesick in the beginning. However, caretakers ensured that we synchronised with the new environment and now we feel like this is our own home," they shared.

Good governance paves way for public prosperity: U.P. CM Yogi
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said true governance is defined by its ability to reach the doorstep of the common people, resolve their real-life issues and uplift the last person in the queue. He said a responsible government actively steps into the lives of citizens, works alongside them, accelerates welfare initiatives, drives development—ultimately leading to prosperity for all. Yogi was speaking at a mass wedding ceremony organised under the CM Mass Marriage Scheme in Gorakhpur where he blessed 1,200 couples who tied the knot at the event organised at the fertilizer factory ground. The CM said he cannot attend individual weddings, but for this mass wedding ceremony, he left all the work in Lucknow and came to bless the brides. 'A daughter in a village is a daughter of us all,' he remarked, underlining the inclusive spirit of the scheme. Addressing the gathering, he described the mass wedding scheme as a powerful strike against child marriage, polygamy and the dowry system. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership for transformation at the national level, mirrored in Uttar Pradesh over the past eight years. Tuesday's mass wedding marked the first large-scale event under the newly enhanced scheme which now allocates ₹1 lakh per couple—up from the previous amount of ₹51,000. Of this, ₹60,000 is directly deposited into the bride's account, while the remaining amount is used to provide essential household items, jewellery, meals and ceremony arrangements. 'We started the scheme in 2017. At that time, we decided ₹35,000 as the amount, which was later raised to ₹51,000. Today, this amount has been raised to ₹1 lakh since April,' he said. Describing the initiative as an extension of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign, the CM emphasised its role in fighting regressive practices and empowering the marginalised, thereby contributing to the nation's overall upliftment. Yogi also highlighted the 'Kanya Sumangala Yojana', which supports girls from birth through graduation with financial aid of up to ₹25,000. Wishing the newlyweds a prosperous future, the CM reaffirmed his government's commitment to uplifting every family and eradicating social evils like casteism, untouchability and dowry.

Get the girl numbers back in Haryana
When it comes to sex ratio at birth (SRB), Haryana has had rollercoaster figures. From an adverse 834 female births for 1,000 male births in the 2011 census (national number was then 918), the state had become somewhat of a turnaround story. Haryana's SRB had improved steadily, reaching 923 in 2019. But that upward curve took a downward trajectory - dropping to 910 in 2024, the state's lowest since 2016, thanks to 481 villages in 13 of Haryana's 22 districts registering SRBs lower than has a long history of adverse SRB - 867 in 1901, increasing to 871 in 2014. Much of this dismal state of affairs is rooted in culturally-entrenched misogyny that normalised female foeticide. So, it was apt that in 2015, GoI launched the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign in Panipat. The scheme included incentives such as one-time payment of ₹21,000 at the birth of a girl, and opening bank accounts for girls through the 'Sukanya Samriddhi' scheme. Efforts to reduce the drop-out rate among girls and increasing their enrolment at secondary and tertiary levels were taken up seriously. The strict enforcement between 2014 and 2019 of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994, banning pre-birth sex determination, did much to stem Haryana's anti-girl flagging enforcement has hurt efforts. Enforcement and intensive awareness efforts need to pick up again. Challenges of driving societal changes must be met head-on again. Laws provide an enforceable framework; enforcement and compliance give a push. Incentives can nudge compliance. But a shift in attitude is possible only through sustained engagement, and involving all stakeholders in an all-of-society approach that was, indeed, evident in the recent past.
