Coronation Street star teases new arrival for one family after plea from fans

Coronation Street's Betsy Swain actress Sydney Martin is very aware about fans' hopes for a new addition to the Swain family, and she's completely backing it for the ITV soap If one Coronation Street favourite gets her way, and viewers, there could be a new addition to the ITV soap. One family in particular could be about to get a new arrival, one cast member is hoping, but who could it be? The family in question is the Swains, amid them forming quite the dynamic with Carla Connor and her household. ‌ But could the infamous Swain cat, teased by Betsy Swain in a past scene and then called for by viewers, finally make an appearance? Betsy actress Sydney Martin certainly hopes so, telling The Mirror at the British Soap Awards all about it. ‌ While she joked about the origins of the potential feline, which may or may not exist, Sydney confessed she would love to see a cat make an appearance. Her co-star Cait Fitton, who plays Betsy's pal Lauren Bolton, agreed and even offered to play cat sitter. Sydney shared: "Where is the cat? I mentioned a cat and I'm feeling now that it may have been a metaphor. I said something like she loves the cat more than me, so where is the Swain cat? "I hope one day it makes an appearance." Cait then backed this saying: "We can get a cat. We can bring it onto set and go there's the cat." In terms of what to call the hypothetical pet, we suggested Bauren - the name Cait and Sydney gave their characters Betsy and Lauren's budding friendship. Rather hilariously, Cait thought we said "Warren" so that could be the winner here. The actress is very keen to help look after the Swain cat though, while she did point out a potential problem. Offering to cat sit for the family, she said: "I'll cat sit unless Frankie is allergic to cats, cos then I can't." As we later spoke with Sydney about the growing family dynamic with Lisa, Betsy, Carla and others, Sydney vowed it would keep "growing". ‌ Of course the hypothetical cat was mentioned once more, with her saying: "It's growing... and a cat. I haven't forgotten the cat." Sydney also praised Corrie boss Kate Brooks for developing strong families and friendships, which she said was key to the ITV soap. Speaking of her own onscreen family, she shared: "It's a beautiful dynamic and it works so well." Asked what was ahead for her character, Sydney confessed she doesn't even ask bosses what's on the way. She joked: "We don't ask we just go with the flow, it's like 'what are we doing next week?'." With the crossover with Emmerdale coming up too, Cait reckons Lauren wouldn't fit in in the Dales, but she'd love to see Cain Dingle have it out with David Platt. Cait also revealed that the stuff with Lauren and Betsy almost didn't happen. Corrie boss Kate added it into an episode as a trial run not knowing what to expect, but soon it proved to be a hit and Kate "loved it".

Corrie's Betsy to 'dig deeper' to uncover past secrets

Coronation Street star Sydney Martin, who plays Betsy Swain in the ITV soap, has said her character is determined to "dig deeper" to discover secrets from the past. Betsy's mum, DS Lisa Swaine (Vicky Myers) has been struggling after Craig Tinker's (Colson Smith) death. When Betsy catchers her mum looking through old boxes it piques her interest. "Their relationship has often been based around lies, there's a lot of times her mum has lied to protect her but Betsy just wants to be treated like an adult now," Martin said. "If snooping in these boxes means she can find out something that her mum's not going to tell her otherwise, then that's what she's going to do." Betsy's snooping leads her to finding out something about "her other mum Becky who died that leaves her wanting to find out more". "It seems there were certain things she didn't know about her other mum and again that stems a bit of resentment in Betsy towards Lisa because it means she's been keeping stuff from her," the soap star explained. When Lisa tries to fob Betsy off and says the box contains details about her paternity that she doesn't want her to see until she's 18, Betsy isn't convinced. "There's a really nice scene where we see that paternity doesn't matter to Betsy," Martin said. "When you see two women in a relationship there's often a big deal about who's the dad. But their family dynamic isn't about that, her parents are her mums, it was just a sperm donor, that doesn't mean anything to Betsy. "So when Lisa tries to fob her off saying the box contains her paternity results, Betsy knows it's something neither of them really care about so she's going to dig deeper." After uncovering some information about Becky, Betsy and Lauren decide to go to the prison to find out more. "They're going to visit Logan, who they know was involved with the death of both Becky and Mason, so it's a big deal but Lauren naively thinks she can handle it," the actress explained. "The plan is to ask questions about the night Becky died and get more of an insight into what happened but at the end of the day Logan is in prison for a reason, he's not a very nice guy and she's probably going to have to deal with the repercussions." Martin, who has been on Coronation Street for a year, said Betsy has "opened a box that should have stayed closed". "Someone in prison, convicted of attacking their own brother, is not going to help her, especially not for free," she said. "He will want something out of it and she's making deals with the devil."

Coronation Street fans may want to get the tissues next week, as the soap are set to air the final goodbye for PC Craig Tinker - but one resident fails to attend It's set to be an emotional week in Coronation Street next week as Craig Tinker gets the send off he deserves after being brutally killed. However, things are thrown into chaos when one resident fails to show up. We'll also see Betsy sneakily visit someone in prison, and a shock arrest for another unlikely resident. ‌ The funeral day starts off in panic when Sarah's concerned to discover that Kit's already left for the day. Lisa is then forced to step in and make a heartfelt speech at the funeral after he's still no where to be seen. But where is Kit? ‌ It's evident he has a lot on his mind as absence comes after he finds Brody injured in an alley with a broken bottle of whisky next to him. It's also a tough week for Lisa - as Carla confides in Betsy that she's worried for her partner. However, Betsy only adds to the worry as Lisa soon catches her daughter snooping through some of her old files. If the emotions of the weeks on goings weren't enough for Lisa, she's set for another shock when she learns her daughter has lied about her whereabouts. Unbeknownst to Lisa, Betsy shows best friend Lauren a picture on her phone of the letter she found containing information on her mum, Becky, and is intent on getting answers. ‌ She then seeks support from Lauren, who accompanies her to the prison visiting room where she prepares to meet Logan, the villainous brother of Mason and Matty Radcliffe. Betsy tells him she's here to find out what really happened to Becky. But will Logan's return come with the answers she needs? However, it's not long before Steve lets slip to Lisa and Carla that Betsy has lied about her whereabouts and in fact ordered a cab to Highfield Prison. How will Lisa and Carla react? Betsy's not the only one in trouble - as Maria's shock altercation leaves her in trouble with the police. ‌ During the Platts barbeque, Maria demands Lou empties her pockets after assuming she's stolen money from Shona. But are Maria's accusations correct? The drama later escalates when Lou is found on the living room floor with a broken coffee table - with Maria standing over her. ‌ The police quickly arrive and tell Maria they're arresting her on suspicion of ABH. But did she do it? Elsewhere, there could be more upset for Todd after saying goodbye to his mother Eileen last week. He's left gutted when Theo cancels their date - could their relationship be on the rocks?

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video There's a tough week ahead for Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) in Coronation Street next week, as she faces Craig Tinker's memorial service – but there's more trouble on the cards. As she and Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) admit how difficult the event will be, with Kit revealing that the family have asked him to make a speech, Carla Connor (Alison King) confides in Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) that she's worried about Lisa. In a bid to help Lisa take her mind off things, Carla comes up with a plan. As the day of Craig's memorial service arrives, Lisa apologises to Carla, before setting about distracting herself by going through some old files. However, when Betsy comes snooping and tries to take a peek at one of the files, Lisa snatches it from her, leaving the curious teen intrigued. Desperate to know what her mum was so keen to hide, Betsy confronts Lisa, who is quick to lie. She tells Betsy that the file contains information about Betsy's paternity, and that she can't see it until she turns 18. When Lisa arrives at the memorial service and notices Kit's absence, she is worried, but soon steps up in his place to deliver a moving speech for Craig. Meanwhile, Betsy clearly wants to know more about her mysterious findings, as Carla later returns home and catches her going through Lisa's files – but what exactly has she dug up? When Betsy shows a picture of the letter she's found to Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton), she reveals that she intends to get to the bottom of it… When we caught up with actresses Cait and Sydney at the British Soap Awards, Cait shared her reaction to the twists in this story, saying: 'I was tired reading it!' 'There is a lot of drama coming up!' Sydney agreed, continuing: 'I'm intrigued for people to see it!' When Lisa asks Betsy to join her for lunch the next day, Betsy makes out that she's meeting Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne), who has recently been released from the STC. However, that proves to be a lie when she and Lauren enter the prison visiting room. As Betsy admits that she's a nervous wreck, is she set to make a deal with the devil? Meanwhile, Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) drops her right in it when he lets slip to Lisa and Carla that Betsy ordered a cab to Highfield Prison. How will they react? As dramatic as this story is set to be, both Sydney Martin and Vicky Myers promised moments of light. 'I don't know how much we can say but there's some exciting stuff coming up,' Sydney promised. 'There's also some really sweet, important scenes in there. I can't go into detail, but I'm glad that they're airing.' More Trending Later in the evening, Vicky told us that 'there is a lot' still to come. 'There is a lot coming, but there's also periods of time that they're really happy, and there's periods of time when it's not going so well, but that's indicative of any relationship, isn't it? And any family life. View More » 'And living together in the small flat… Let's see how they navigate all of that!' Spouse wants to reconcile with husband's estranged sister

When we had our first child 10 months ago, my husband asked his dad to wait to tell Lisa until we were out of the hospital, in case Betsy tried to come to the hospital (we all live in the same city). When Lisa found out five days or so after the birth, she was furious and cut the whole family off. Advertisement Lisa has recently made amends with other parts of the family, but we have not seen her. My husband doesn't care about connecting with her, partly because they aren't close and partly because he doesn't like her new significant other. I haven't reached out because I'm not that close with her either and the new baby keeps me busy. Get Love Letters: The Newsletter A weekly dispatch with all the best relationship content and commentary – plus exclusive content for fans of Love Letters, Dinner With Cupid, weddings, therapy talk, and more. Enter Email Sign Up I don't have anything against her, and I want her to be in my son's life, but I fear I've waited too long and don't know how to mend the relationship. I don't like being at odds with someone, especially family, albeit not my blood family. My thought was to text her and apologize and start that way. What do you think? WANT TO MEND FENCES A. You're stuck in a tricky position because you're not responsible for any of the hurt in this situation (and it seems like there's a lot of hurt to go around). Nevertheless, it's obviously impacting you. Advertisement Because this is your husband's family and the estrangement from Lisa is connected to the estrangement from Betsy, it'll be best to follow his lead here. There's harm in the past that he's, rightfully, put an internal barrier around. There are also some slightly confusing complications in the present, namely the aversion to Lisa's new husband. I can see not wanting to spend a lot of time around a person one finds awkward but letting that aversion snowball into a family fracture seems extreme to me. I'm left with the question of whether this awkwardness has been understated in the letter (and is therefore more of a concern) or if it seems like more of an issue because of your husband's already complicated history with Lisa. Whatever the truth of the situation is, he and Lisa have some things to work out. You can talk with him about your desire to bridge the gap and ask him how you can best support him, but you've got to let him make the decision. There are old wounds here, so you'll want to exercise care around them. Q. This is regarding 'Worried Grandmother,' who was trying to help her 17-year-old grandson navigate his parents' contentious divorce. My parents got divorced when I was in third grade. Our parents never asked us kids to take sides. It wasn't until I was in college that I heard the term 'broken home' and asked the teacher what that meant and he said 'divorce.' Advertisement As it turned out, dad was a good dad just not a good husband. He had a drinking problem. My dad would bring Christmas gifts and he and my mom would wrap them together. He died from a brain tumor at age 43 when I was 14. It makes me feel sad when parents cannot behave better. Life is too short. Just wanted you to know that some parents get it right. I have been stepmom to my husband's only daughter since she was 5. This Valentine's Day she sent a card that said, 'For My Parents on Valentine's Day,' so I know I did it right, too. UNBROKEN HOME A. Thanks for sharing. Divorce can be so hard for parents and kids. Sometimes we're not able to keep our worst instincts at bay. But it's wonderful when the greater good of a family unit wins out, even as that family is changing shape. Q. This is in response to 'Grieving Son,' who felt disrespected by the treatment he received from cemetery staff after his father's death. I am on the board of a nonprofit cemetery. 'Grieving Son' should contact the state cemetery board to file a formal grievance. Be specific about the nature of the conflict(s), the cemetery personnel's behavior, including their name if known and what they did or said, and to whom. Photos of any damage to the gravesite would also be helpful. CEMETERY BOARD MEMBER A. Great suggestions; thank you very much! R. Eric Thomas can be reached at .
