Kota boy Rajit Gupta tops JEE-A in tie-breaker: What are metrics he aced to secure AIR 1?

Scoring 332 out of 360 marks, 18-year old Rajit Gupta, a native of Rajasthan's Kota, secured All India Rank 1 in the JEE-Advanced examinations, results of which were announced on Monday. Rajit Gupta was followed by Haryana student Saksham Jindal, who secured AIR-2 in the exams after falling short on tie-breaking metrics. Majid Mujahid Husain and Parth Mandar Vartak secured AIR-3 and AIR-4, respectively. Gupta and Jindal, who are students of the Allen Career Institute located in Kota, are from the IIT-Delhi zone. While the scores of both students matched when the results were made public, Gupta had the upper hand, having performed better on the tie-breaking metrics - which are based on higher positive marks. On the policy for a tie-breaker in the case of two students scoring the same aggregate scores, the JEE website clarifies that 'candidates having higher positive marks will be awarded higher rank." However, if this measure fails to break the tie, a 'higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Mathematics.' It further adds, 'If this does not break the tie, higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Physics. If there is a tie even after this, candidates will be assigned the same rank.' However, in this case, Rajit Gupta was able to beat the tie-breaker based on higher positive marks. His father, Deepak Gupta is a sub-divisional engineer with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and mother Shruti Agrawal teaches home science at a Kota college. Apart from Gupta and Jindal, two other students from the coaching centre in Kota - Akshat Chourasia (AIR-6) and Devesh P Bhaiya (AIR-8) - secured ranks in the top 10. Allen Career Institute celebrated the success of four of its students at its Sammunat Campus in Jawahar Nagar, news agency PTI reported. Allen Career CEO Nitin Kukreja in a press statement highlighted that this was the second consecutive time that the institute had produced an All India Topper. During celebrations at the institute, the toppers and their families were initially greeted by the directors of the institute, followed by an interaction with the media. 'My seniors and teachers played a huge role in inspiring me to do well in the exam,' Gupta told HT, while adding that he was confident about JEE advanced after having score 100 percentile (AIR16) in Mains. In the interaction, the four students from Allen praised Kota, for the favourable environment it provides to those preparing for JEE exams, according to the PTI report. Meanwhile, their parents highlighted the preparations the students undertook in the days leading up to the exams.

JEE-Advanced: Students from Kota coaching centres secure 1st, 2nd, 6th, 7th ranks

Four students from preparatory centres at Rajasthan's coaching hub of Kota have secured the first, second, sixth, and seventh positions in this year's Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced (JEE-Advanced) for admissions to premier engineering colleges. Rajit Gupta, 18, who secured the first rank, said his father, Deepak Gupta, a sub-divisional engineer in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, inspired him. 'My father has been an inspiration,' said Rajit Gupta, whose mother, Shruti Agrawal, teaches home science at a Kota college. He added that his father prepared for the Rajasthan Pre-Engineering Test (RPET) at the same Kota institute where he studied. 'He ranked 48th in RPET in 1994,' said Rajit Gupta, who ranked 16th in the JEE (Mains) for admissions to undergraduate engineering, architecture, and planning courses. Rajit Gupta credited his focus on ensuring he did not repeat his mistakes for his success. '...because only when the mistakes are removed, the foundation of your subject becomes strong,' he said. He called happiness the key. 'I remain happy in every situation. Even now, if I get a chance, I play with the children in my neighbourhood. I am confident about my preparation. I never followed a strict schedule for studies because it creates unnecessary pressure. I used to study only when I felt like it, but for whatever time I studied, I studied well.' Rajit Gupta, who got 332 out of 350 marks, looked forward to studying at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. Saksham Jindal, 18, who is from Haryana and secured the second rank, said he dreamt of being a cricketer before the Covid-19 lockdown. 'I played at the under-14 level in Haryana's Hisar district. But my practice stopped during Covid-19. I had no clue what to do. I found my new interest in puzzle games and mathematics-based activities. I also started appearing for Olympiads. Gradually, I decided to take JEE,' said Jindal. Jindal said his parents are doctors in Hisar, who gave him full freedom to choose what he wanted. 'Two years ago, I decided to come to Kota and prepare for JEE. It was challenging. But you can achieve anything when you have dedication and proper guidance that I got from my coaching institute,' said Jindal, who is set to join IIT Bombay. Majid Mujahid Hussain, who is from Maharashtra's Jalgaon, secured the third rank after preparing for the exam at Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur, around 100 km away. He said he chose a school in Burhanpur, along with his twin brother, Sajid, to avoid the undue pressure and hustle and bustle of bigger cities. Hussain, who secured 97% marks in class 12, said that a big city and coaching might give exposure to students, but they have no role in a deeper understanding of concepts. 'I am glad that my teachers and family helped me in my studies and supported me mentally,' said Hussain, whose brother secured the 1,600th rank. He added that he studied 12-14 hours daily and concentrated on understanding the concepts. 'After success in the JEE (Mains), I spent 10-12 hours on revision. I was expecting a good rank in the JEE-Advanced.' He called focus and self-confidence key to success. Hussain's father, Mujahid, a professor at Jalgaon University, said, 'I am happy that my son made us proud. He was an intelligent boy since childhood and won Olympiads in school.' Akshat Kumar and Devesh Kumar, who also studied in Kota, secured the sixth and eighth ranks. Kota, the hub of India's test preparation business, estimated to be worth ₹10,000 crore annually, has been in the news for student suicides. Students from around the country arrive there in numbers after completing class X and register in residential institutes, besides enrolling in schools, largely for certification purposes. According to police data, 15 students died by suicide in Kota in 2022, 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, seven in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 in 2015. No suicides were reported in 2020 and 2021 as coaching institutes were shut or ran in online mode due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In January 2024, the Union education minister issued instructions for the functioning of coaching centres and restricted the enrolment of students only above 16. It warned of a penalty of ₹1,00,000 for institutes in case of any violation.

BSNL registers first back-to-back quarterly profits

New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): State-owned telecom operator BSNL on Tuesday reported Rs 280 crore in net profits during January-March 2025 quarter, against Rs 262 crore logged in the October-December 2024 quarter. With this, the telecom operator, which has not been in the best of financial health, reported its first back-to-back profitable quarters. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) today announced its audited results for the year ended March 31, 2025, approved at the 243rd meeting of the Board. In the January-March quarter of 2024, the telecom operator had reported a Rs 849 crore loss. Its overall loss in the just-concluded financial year 2024-25 reduced by 58 per cent - to Rs 2,247 crore in from Rs 5,370 crore in 2023-24. It also reported stronger operating metrics. 27 of its telecom circles turned EBITDA-positive in 2024-25 (only 17 circles last year- 2023-24); 10 circles turned Profit After Tax-positive in 2024-25 (only 3 circles last year- 2023-24). BSNL's operating revenue rose 7.8 per cent in 2024-25 to Rs 20,841 crore, as against Rs 19,330 crore in 2023-24. The growth from all core revenue segments - mobility, Fiber to the Home (FTTH), Leased Lines incl Ent, and Asset Monetisation -- have increased when compared to last financial year. BSNL anticipated that the outlook for the coming year will continue to show strong top-line revenue growth alongside a steady decline in operating costs--both critical to sustained profitability. However, in the near term, higher depreciation and amortisation arising from recent spectrum acquisitions and heavy capex will weigh on quarterly results despite these solid fundamentals, it has forecasted. 'Over the medium to long term, BSNL's profitability prospects are robust, supported by the nationwide rollout of 4G/5G (use of Atmanirbhar equipment), 5G Network-as-a-Service initiatives, investments in core infrastructure and upgradation of backhaul aging fibres. Although profit after tax may be subdued next fiscal year because of the sizeable capex and spectrum infusion, these investments are expected to spur accelerated growth and profitability thereafter,' Ministry of Communications said in a statement. In addition, the ongoing asset-monetisation efforts will generate further funds that can be reinvested to further strengthen the company's capital programme, it said. BSNL has almost doubled its asset monetisation last year. 'The sharp turnaround is testimony to professional management, government support and relentless focus on both the top line and the bottom line. BSNL is not just being revived, but redefined.' said A Robert J Ravi I T S, CMD, BSNL. 'With disciplined cost control and accelerated 4G/5G deployment, we are confident of sustaining this growth trajectory and delivering affordable, high-quality connectivity to every Indian- to whom we are highly indebted. We will not be chasing profits as our end goal. We will be redefining telecom excellence in public service. When we consistently do the right things - provide excellent service, reach the unreached, innovate for inclusivity - profits will naturally follow as a byproduct of that excellence,' the BSNL CMD added in the statement. 'Although profit after tax may be subdued next fiscal year because of the sizeable capex and spectrum infusion, these investments are expected to spur accelerated growth and profitability thereafter,' BSNL said, adding that the ongoing asset monetisation efforts will generate further funds that can be reinvested to further strengthen the company's capital program. BSNL added assets worth ₹26,022 crore in FY25, comprising ₹15,324 crore worth of equipment/towers, and others, and ₹10,698 crore of spectrum, the larges in the company's history, mainline led by 4G rollout and fibre footprint expansion. 'The sharp turnaround is testimony to professional management, government support and relentless focus on both the top line and the bottom line. BSNL is not just being revived, but redefined,' said Robert J Ravi, CMD, BSNL. 'With disciplined cost control and accelerated 4G/5G deployment, we are confident of sustaining this growth trajectory and delivering affordable, high-quality connectivity to every Indian. We will not be chasing profits as our end goal,' Ravi added.
