Air India plane crash: Among dead, two sisters going on vacation to London, mom returning after dropping daughter

A 35-year-old woman returning to the UK after dropping off her daughter at the grandparents' house in Vadodara, two sisters heading on vacation to London, and another woman returning after coming to India for medical treatment — they were among the passengers of the Air India flight to London that crashed just minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. The list of passengers on flight AI-171 showed that at least 33 of them were from Gujarat's Anand district, 19 from Vadodara, and 17 from Kheda. In Anand district, a distraught family recalled that Bhavna Rana and her sister Anandi Rana had been looking forward to their two-month vacation in London, where Bhavna's two children live. An employee of a hospital in Karamsad, Bhavna had been saving her leaves to make the visit — her first to the UK. Amit Rana, Bhavna and Anandi's nephew, said, 'My paternal aunt, Bhavna, had taken leave for two months to visit London. Both my paternal aunts were on the flight. Our family members are in Ahmedabad to look for them… We are unable to come to terms with this and are hoping for a miracle.' Relatives of Rupal Patel (44), from Uttarsanda in Anand, said she was on her way back after having come to India for treatment and that she has two young children in the UK. 'Her brother, Pawan Patel, had gone to drop her off at the airport and had just got back to Anand when he learnt about the crash and turned around to return to Ahmedabad to find her. Unfortunately, she has not been traced and we are devastated at the thought of having lost her… She has two young children. Her husband is on his way to India. Her parents have been living here over 35 years. This is a painful loss for us all,' said a close family friend. Nancy Patel (35) was returning to London after dropping off her young daughter with her husband's family in Vadodara. Their neighbours said, 'It is heartbreaking news. Her parents departed for Ahmedabad immediately to submit their DNA samples and try to look for her… She had only come to drop off her daughter in India and was to come back shortly to take her back. Our heart goes out to the family, especially the little daughter.' Kheda Collector Amit Prakash Yadav confirmed that 17 residents of various talukas of the district are feared killed in the crash. These include Mehmadabad resident Rudra Patel (20); Thasra residents Jiya Parvez Vohra (6), Parvez Vahora (32); Nadiad residents Mahadev Pawar (75) and wife Ashaben (65), as well as Hina Patel; Kathalal residents Prashant Patel (49) and Piyush Patel (29); Rupal Patel (44) from Uttarsanda; Pravin Patel and Ranjanben Patel from Mahuda; Rajnikant Darji and wife Pushpa, as well as Vasuben Raj, from Vaso; Ajay Patel from Vadtal; and Purnima Patel from Dakor. Of these, relatives of Piyush Patel are based in Canada and have been contacted by the administration to come to India and give their DNA samples. Yadav said, 'Our team is at the civil hospital in Ahmedabad. We are in close contact with all family members of affected persons. These are the details of passengers on board the Air India flight… Relatives of all of the above passengers have given their DNA samples at Ahmedabad civil hospital… We are not making any statements about death until confirmed by the competent authority.' Bhavik Maheshwari (26), a resident of Vadodara who was based in London for the last couple of years, had come home around 10 days ago for his wedding, and was returning on the ill-fated flight. Bhavik left behind Isha Maheshwari from Ahmedabad's Bavla. They had got married on June 10. An inconsolable Isha Maheshwari barely shifted her gaze from her hands, adorned with dark red mehndi. As her family urged her to stay strong, her eyes remained transfixed, and she showed no reaction to the wails of other grieving relatives around her.

After govt announces Rs 5L ex gratia, dead Jamshedpur patients get sudden kin

1 2 3 Jamshedpur: Abandoned by family and friends during their lifetime, three persons who perished in a hospital balcony collapse in Jamshedpur on Saturday, suddenly has a wife, son and a brother, who have surfaced to claim govt compensation Astonished Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital authorities said the three patients from medicine ward of the B block of the hospital -- David Johnson (75), Lukas Tirki (61) and Srichand Tati (67) never had a visitor during their stay, but shortly after state health minister Irfan Ansari announced ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the dead, dozens of people have queued up at the hospital door seeking the bodies and money. David was admitted at the hospital as an abandoned patient in 2019 and was mostly confined to his bed. "David, when alive, had often lamented to the hospital staff that he has no family members, so no one comes to visit him. He was very grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staffers of the medicine ward where he was admitted," said Rukmini, one of the hospital staff members. As David had no personal attendant, the staffer and janitors used to look after him and arrange soap, body oil and other needs through crowdfunding. "Even after the building collapsed on Saturday afternoon, no one from the family of the trio turned up. Suddenly from Sunday morning, dozens of family members crowded outside the hospital office, to claim the bodies," said Bhavna, another cleaning staff. To stake claim over David's body, a woman identified herself as Elin Johnson said she was his widow and a son, Patrick Johnson turned up. They claim that they are residents of the locality where David lived. "We always looked after David during his hospital stay. This claim is totally false and baseless," said another staffer of the hospital. Similarly, a middle-aged woman claiming to be the niece of Lukas, demanded that his body be handed over to them. According to the staffers, Lukas was admitted to the ward in December 2024 and thereafter no one came to visit him or inquire about his whereabouts. The story of Srichand is no different. He used to live in a broken ambulance parked on the hospital campus. Later, when he fell ill, he was admitted to the hospital last year. Nobody from their family ever visited when he was admitted to the wards. "Now, around four people claiming to be relatives of Srichand have staked claim over his body," said Bhavna. Angry hospital authorities said the govt should not hand over the bodies to anyone claiming them. "We don't want any money from govt to perform the last rites. But the govt should not give any money to anyone who claims to be the relatives of the deceased," said one of them. Deputy superintendent of the hospital Nakul Chaudhury said as the post-mortem examination of the three deceased have been carried out, local administration has to take a decision on what to do next.
