Wedding procession pelted with stones in Amroha; 7 injured

Seven people were injured after a wedding procession taken out by members of the Dalit community was pelted with stones, in Amroha's Rahdra village in the wee hours of Tuesday. Police later registered an FIR against eight identified and 15-20 unidentified men at Gajraula police station of the district. The eight identified accused hail from the village where the incident was reported. It was the wedding of one Sonam Kumari, the elder daughter of one Ramgopal, and the wedding party had arrived from Shirkoi Bhur in Moradabad. The violence reportedly sparked by a dispute over a request to remove a vehicle. A video purportedly of the chaotic scene has surfaced on social media. Circle officer Shwetabh Bhaskar confirmed that the police had registered a case under relevant sections, including the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and were investigating the matter. Police had to resort to mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order. 'Considering the tension in the village, a police force has been deployed to maintain law and order,' Bhaskar stated, adding that teams had been tasked to arrest the accused. Meanwhile, Lok Sabha MP Chandra Shekhar Azad took to X to criticise the incident: 'The stone-pelting and attack on the wedding procession of a Dalit woman in Rahdara village, located in the Gajraula police station area of Amroha, by goons driven by a casteist mindset is extremely painful and highly condemnable. Reports have emerged that several people were injured in this incident'. Also, teams from the Bhim Army and the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) reached the scene of the incident and stood in solidarity with the bride's family. The MP demanded the best possible treatment for the injured, prompt arrest of the culprits, provision of government protection and appropriate compensation to the bride's family.

2 held after Dalit student shot dead in Saharanpur

Meerut: Two people were arrested on Sunday after a 19-year-old Dalit student was shot dead outside a college in Saharanpur the previous day, police said. The incident took place around 1 pm on the Gagalheri-Deoband highway in the Nagal police station area. Ashutosh Singh, a first-year B Pharma student, had just appeared for an examination when 5–6 masked men attacked him and his friend Aryan Malik with sticks. As other students tried to intervene, one of the assailants opened fire, shooting Ashutosh in the face. He collapsed and was declared dead at the hospital, while Aryan is undergoing treatment. The incident triggered protests by Bhim Army and other minority groups, demanding immediate action. SSP Saharanpur Rohit Singh Sajwan said, "It appears the attack was driven by personal enmity. Ashutosh was killed while trying to save his friend. We are investigating all angles." He added that after a brief exchange of gunfire, two suspects — Udit Rod and Ayush Kumar, both residents of Saharanpur — were arrested. The car and weapon used in the crime were recovered, and efforts are on to trace the others involved. Police said an FIR under BNS sections 191(2), 191(3) (rioting), 103 (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 3(2)(5) of the SC/ST Act, and other relevant sections has been registered against 6–7 men. "Efforts are being made to identify and arrest the others involved in the attack," the SSP said.

‘Hurt community's sentiments: Vandana Kataria's family protests renaming stadium in Haridwar

Haridwar: Family members of hockey player Vandana Kataria have opposed the state govt's decision to "rename" Vandana Kataria Stadium in Haridwar as the Yogasthali Sports Complex. They said the move "hurt their sentiments and those of the entire Dalit community to whom Kataria belongs" and demanded that the original name be retained. At a press conference in Haridwar, Kataria's younger brother, Pankaj Kataria, said, "Roshnabad sports stadium is recognised as Vandana Kataria Stadium after a renowned hockey player, but now the govt has given it a new name, Yogasthali Sports Complex, which will become a landmark in the future. Vandana Kataria Stadium is not just a name, it is an honour for our family, our community, and the entire nation. This decision has deeply hurt us and all sports lovers. We request that no new name or change be made." The district administration, on the other hand, has clarified that only the overall campus has been named Yogasthali Sports Complex, while the hockey stadium within it will continue to bear Kataria's name. District sports officer Shabali Gurung told TOI, "There are different sports facilities in the campus, including the hockey stadium, swimming pool, badminton, etc. Only a new name has been given for the entire sports complex, but the hockey stadium will continue to be known as the Vandana Kataria Hockey Stadium as before. No changes have been made to it." Additional director, sports, Ajay Kumar Agarwal, also said the govt has not altered any existing names and that while a name was assigned to the entire sports complex, the individual sports facilities within it have retained their original names. However, Bhim Army and other Dalit groups have rejected the clarification and announced plans to protest. Bhim Army leader Deepak Sethpura told TOI, "Vandana Kataria is our pride and we cannot compromise on the name of our sister. The govt is fooling our people by changing the stadium name. If the decision is not revoked, Bhim Army will stage a protest." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Brother's Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Tensions escalate between lawyer groups over installation of Ambedkar statue at Madhya Pradesh HC

In a related development, Bhim Army national president Satpal Tanwar announced on Friday that he would visit Gwalior on May 26. He also appealed to Bhim Sena activists in Rajasthan to gather at the Jaipur Bench of the Rajasthan High Court and remove the statue of Sage Manu if the installation of Ambedkar's statue at the Gwalior Bench is not permitted. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesperson and former MLA Shailendra Patel, who belongs to the OBC community, described the opposition to Ambedkar's statue as an act of 'disrespect to the Indian Constitution.' The controversy dates back to February 19, when a group of lawyers met the then Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, Suresh Kumar Kait, and submitted a memorandum seeking approval for the statue. The Chief Justice reportedly gave verbal consent, after which a local committee was formed and a platform was constructed within the Gwalior Bench premises. However, a significant section of the High Court Bar Association in Gwalior opposed the initiative, claiming that the broader bar community was not informed and that necessary permissions from the building committee were not obtained. This disagreement triggered tensions between the two lawyer factions. On May 10, members of the Bar Association hoisted the national flag at the proposed statue site. They stated that the act was to commemorate Operation Sindoor and expressed their intention to erect a 100-foot-high tricolour at the location in the future. On May 14, a group of lawyers arrived for the statue's installation but were met with strong resistance from members of the Bar Association. Tensions escalated further on May 17, when lawyers opposing the statue reportedly assaulted Bhim Army leader Rupesh Ken and his associates outside the High Court premises in Gwalior, despite a heavy police presence. The Bhim Army members had come in support of the statue's installation. Subsequently, on May 19, lawyers from both factions travelled to Jabalpur to meet outgoing Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, who urged them to maintain peace. Since then, both sides have continued to hold discussions.
