Bank staffer dupes customers of 49L

Kolkata: A senior vice-president of a private bank lodged a complaint against a relationship manager of the same bank, alleging misappropriation of Rs 49 lakh from multiple customers. According to police, the official alleged that the accused staff made unauthorized transactions from customer accounts, diverting funds to unrelated third-party accounts, credit card payments, and Paytm wallets. Investigations said the accused allegedly closed the customers' original savings accounts without their consent, opened new accounts in their names, and transferred funds to various individuals who happened to be his relatives. Between Jan and March 2025, multiple disputed mobile banking transactions took place. These funds were reportedly used to pay insurance policies taken in the names of the accused staff's relatives and associates. Cops begin pandal recce early, check preparedness

1 2 3 4 Kolkata: With less than 40 days till Mahalaya, police in Bidhannagar and Kolkata have started early inspections of Durga Puja pandals across the city. The visits, which began this week, are aimed at assessing preparedness and ensuring compliance with safety and crowd management guidelines. On Monday, senior officers of Bidhannagar City Police, including those of deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner rank, visited several major Durga Puja venues in Salt Lake and Dum Dum Park, including Salt Lake's AK, BJ, and FD blocks, as well as Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha and Dum Dum Park Tarun Dal. During the visits, organisers were reminded of mandatory guidelines, like avoiding the use of laser lights, setting up separate entry and exit channels, and preparing detailed crowd management plans. "Last year, multiple pandals in the township drew a large number of visitors, which made both traffic and crowd management challenging. This year, we have started inspections early. More visits and meetings will follow in the coming weeks," an officer said. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata At AK Block, organisers were instructed to ensure that entry and exit pathways are sufficiently wide and that the ground remains dry to prevent difficulties during emergencies. "The police asked about our theme and traffic management arrangements," said Raja Banik of the AK Block committee, which is focusing its theme on the life and works of film-maker Ritwik Ghatak to mark his centenary. In Kolkata, officers-in-charge of all police stations have submitted preliminary reports to Lalbazar after visiting pandals in their jurisdictions. The reports detail themes, estimated crowd sizes, and anticipated inauguration dates. Senior officials, including deputy commissioners and joint commissioners, are expected to begin their own assessments soon. Police sources indicated that central Kolkata will be a priority area this year. Reviews will include crowd control measures and parking arrangements, particularly in light of new theme-based pujas in the area. "This year, Md Ali Park, College Square, and Santosh Mitra Square may see revised crowd circulation plans. We are preparing two versions — one assuming normal local train services, and another for a scenario without train movement. If trains are not running, the usual Sealdah-College Street-CR Avenue pedestrian flow could be reversed to manage the increased footfall, especially with larger pujas also being organised in the Jorasanko and Girish Park areas," an officer said. According to a deputy commissioner, the early inspections are meant to address two key concerns: the possibility of heavy rain during the festival and the need for an effective traffic circulation and parking strategy. Reopening of shut exit gate, frequent trolley retrieval to end airport chaos

Kolkata: Reopening an exit gate at the terminal's arrival level, deploying more policemen to regulate traffic, and more frequent retrieval of luggage trolleys to keep the carriageway free — the Bidhannagar Traffic Police and the Kolkata airport have embarked on a joint initiative to eliminate the chaos, clear logjam, streamline traffic movement, and improve the first impression of travellers landing in the city. According to the proposal, a significant portion of the congestion stems from a combination of high passenger volume, delays in vehicle movement and inadequate pedestrian management at the airport's integrated terminal. The police and the airport authorities have identified three key trouble spots — the arrival gate area, the commercial vehicle line and the parking lot's exit gate. "The arrival gate at 2A/B was shut since the pandemic. It was not an issue in the first few years, but with the passenger count increasing to pre-Covid levels, it is becoming very difficult to manage the passenger load with just one gate, that too at the start of the terminal building where passengers come out and crowd near the gate," said a Bidhannagar City Police officer. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata The airport authorities, which so far cited a lack of enough CISF personnel to manage the gate, are finally considering reopening the gate. "Opening gate 2A/B for arriving passengers will ease the load on gate 1A/B. A zebra crossing is also recommended near the gate to ensure safe pedestrian movement and facilitate smoother traffic circulation," an officer said. Cops and airport authorities said they were also working on a streamlined approach to managing entry and exit points to minimise waiting time and reduce vehicle pile-ups. The airport authorities are also installing clearer and more prominent signage to help passengers and drivers navigate the terminal area more efficiently, reducing unnecessary halts and confusion. A proposal has also been floated for an overall trolley management overhaul. It suggests designated trolley zones and more frequent collection, along with awareness campaigns to curb the issue of abandoned trolleys causing obstructions. "Passengers coming out of the airport often leave their trolleys on the side of the road while they board their cars or app cabs. These trolleys are usually collected after half an hour, but during rush hours, it also leads to traffic congestion as the trolleys block the pathway. The current proposal states faster retrieval of trolleys from this area at a gap of 10 minutes," said another officer. Alternative exit routes, faster parking formalities, and directional signage are also among other suggested improvements to reduce delays in the parking lot. "A public address system will be introduced in the parking lot to relay real-time traffic and parking information to motorists. That is also likely to cut down on traffic chaos outside the airport terminal," said the officer.

Baguiati cops slap cruelty FIR on puppy killer

1 2 Kolkata: An FIR under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered at Baguiati PS after the driver of a sedan allegedly ran over and killed a puppy in front of the police station on Saturday afternoon. According to Constable Sanat Dey, who was on sentry duty at the time of the incident, the vehicle was speeding and driving recklessly when it struck the puppy around 3.30 pm just outside the sentry post of the station. The puppy reportedly died on the spot due to the impact. The constable lodged a formal complaint with the officer-in-charge, urging prompt legal action against the driver for the alleged act of cruelty. Police registered a case under Section 325 of the BNS which deals with mischief by killing or maiming an animal, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. "The man came to Gorakshanath Temple adjoining our police station premises. The incident happened while he was leaving the temple after offering puja. He was driving in a very reckless manner, leading to the puppy's death. We have sent a notice to him and will take the strictest possible action against him," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act penalises individuals who treat animals cruelly, including causing unnecessary pain or suffering. Animal rights activists have welcomed the swift registration of the case and demanded strict punishment.

Bidhannagar cops make body cams, CCTV must for passport verification

Kolkata: Aimed at enhancing transparency and security in the passport verification process, Bidhannagar City Police has made it mandatory for all passport verifications to be conducted under camera surveillance — either through body cams during home visits or CCTV systems in police stations — from this month. The move comes at a time when Kolkata Police is investigating a fake passport racket and have arrested a retired sub-inspector for allegedly clearing applications without proper enquiry and adequate verification. Officers said the move will also help them reduce complaints from residents about officers, civic volunteers and middlemen demanding money or harassing applicants in the name of additional documentation. "Now, all passport verifications are being conducted under body camera surveillance. In the case of home verification, only representatives from the Special Branch are visiting the houses of applicants, and the entire process is being recorded. The footage is being stored until the passport is issued. At police stations, the passport verification process is being conducted strictly under CCTV monitoring with audio recording," said Tauseef Ali Azhar, ADCP SB of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "Whenever we receive specific complaints, we take strict action with zero tolerance. In several instances, we initiated departmental enquiries and took disciplinary action against the officers concerned." The officer added that since May, during passport verification at home, police station, or office, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification system has been introduced through an internal app. "This has made the process more accurate and transparent. The passport verification now undergoes four-five layers of scrutiny — from the verifying officer to the local IC to the police commissioner — ensuring greater accountability," he said. The initiative gains significance in light of a racket that allegedly used forged identity documents to secure genuine Indian passports. The case came to light last Sept when the Kolkata Regional Passport Office flagged nearly 240 suspicious passports issued on the basis of faulty documents. A special probe team of Kolkata Police was formed to investigate the scam, and a charge sheet was submitted in March. Investigators found that police allegedly failed to detect forged documents during verification. On Tuesday, ED carried out raids at multiple locations across Kolkata and its surrounding districts as part of the wider investigation.
