18-year-old New Town girl dies while learning scooter

1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: A class XII examinee taking scooter lessons from her friend on a New Town road without wearing a helmet died after she failed to negotiate a speed-breaker and fell on the ground, suffering severe head injuries on Sunday night. The accident happened near the Majherhat shrine in the Rekjuani area in New Town around 10 pm when there were very few vehicles plying on the road. Victim Pooja Saha (18) was a resident of Salua on Rajarhat Main Road, located near the place of accident. CCTV footage showed Saha riding the scooter with unstable hands as her friend, Subhankar Bhowmik, a resident of Narayanpur, was seen guiding her from the pillion seat. Bhowmik was seen wearing a helmet. "It looked like the girl suddenly turned the accelerator in full throttle as she lost control of the two-wheeler, and it began moving at a high speed before it hit the speed breaker," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. As the accident happened, Saha was flung off the scooter, and her head rammed against the concrete. Bhowmik also fell down, but since he had the helmet strapped on, he escaped with minor injuries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Locals rushed Saha to Rekjuani Rural Health Center with injuries on her head, neck, chest, and abdomen. Doctors declared her dead on arrival at the hospital. Bhowmik was treated for minor injuries. Family members said Saha recently passed higher secondary examination with good scores and was awaiting college admission. "She purchased a new bag and clothes in anticipation, which now remain untouched in her closet. She wanted to pursue graduation in English. She had so many dreams. We were all so proud of her," said a grieving relative. "This loss is unbearable." Airport PS has launched an unnatural death probe. The damaged scooter has been seized and Saha's body sent for post-mortem. "We have been pleading with riders to always wear helmets. If the woman wore the helmet, she could still live," said the officer. "We also urge citizens, especially young and inexperienced riders, to be cautious while operating two-wheelers and avoid late-night rides without supervision or proper training. "

Kolkata Police apprehended a taxi driver and a tout involved in scamming and threatening an American vlogger, Dustin, upon his arrival at Kolkata airport. The duo, Alamgir Molla and Manoj Kumar Roy, were arrested after police noticed them attempting to scam another passenger. KOLKATA: Bidhannagar Police arrested the taxi driver and the tout who scammed and threatened a popular American vlogger during his trip to a Park Street hotel from Kolkata airport last week. TOI wrote about the ordeal and shared the description and video posted by the vlogger, Dustin, with Bidhannagar cops, following which driver Alamgir Molla and tout Manoj Kumar Roy were arrested. They were booked under BNS sections dealing with extortion and criminal conspiracy. "We lodged a suo motu complaint on Wednesday afternoon. We saw the video and were on the lookout for the offenders. While searching for the duo, we saw them back at airport again trying to scam another passenger. We noticed their activities from a distance and then arrested them," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. After the arrest, Bidhannagar cops also made a short video featuring clips from Dustin's vlog wherein the tout, Manoj Kumar, was heard threatening him in Bengali to break his bones and throw him out of the car while demanding more money during the ride. The video ends with images of the two holding identification booking slates against their chest after being arrested by the cops. Break-in expert caught in 24 hrs after high-value Salt Lake theft

Kolkata: In an instance of prompt resolution to a burglary case, Bidhannagar City Police arrested the culprit within 24 hours of a high-value theft of silverware, jewellery and cash in a college professor's house in Salt Lake's HA block. Prabir Das, a notorious thief, was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly breaking into the house of Payal Bose Biswas, an assistant professor at Ramkrishna Sarada Mission at Jessore Road in Dum Dum between 12:55am and 1:20am on May 26. Police officials described Das, 50, a resident of Burtolla in north Kolkata, as a lone wolf operator with dozens of theft cases against him across Kolkata. The quick arrest provided relief to residents of the area, but they said concerns about security persist and that there was a need to enhance surveillance and patrolling. Das is being interrogated, and the cops hope a full recovery would be made soon. As per the FIR filed at Bidhannagar South police station, the burglar broke three front door latches and locks to gain entry. The stolen items included a silver Lakshmi idol, various pearl jewellery pieces, watches, sunglasses, and Rs 10,000 in cash. The thief also disconnected the external TV hard drive and WiFi connection. "In my 48 years of living here, I never experienced such a savage break-in," said Biswas. "My tenants, who were away for two months, suffered the most losses. This was the first time I had rented my flat. I wonder how the thief made off in 20 minutes after breaking three locks. He is so smart he disconnected the entire console in this short time. I am indebted to police for the fantastic work," he added. Police officials said Das is an expert in break-ins and that he first cuts off the CCTV feed upon entering a house. Despite this tactic, Das was captured on CCTV while entering the professor's house. In fact, news of Das being spotted in the area had reached the cops, but he struck before he could be nabbed. "Son of a govt employee, Das got addicted to a flashy lifestyle and drugs and was involved in multiple thefts across Kolkata. He was last arrested for thefts in Salt Lake about three years ago," said a police official requesting anonymity. The burglary renewed attention to rising concerns about security in the HA block area. Residents spoke of multiple break-in attempts in recent months, including one at a locked house just three streets away about three months ago. The case highlighted the challenge of residential security in Salt Lake, particularly in areas with multiple unoccupied properties. Police sources said Das specifically targeted houses where occupants were away, suggesting a pattern of careful planning before execution. Bidhannagar City Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS and that further investigation is on to determine if Das is connected to other recent burglaries in the area.

Bidhannagar police arrest three in salt lake office robbery worth fifty lakh

1 2 3 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar South Police arrested three individuals in connection with a daring robbery worth around Rs 50 lakh, committed at an office located in GC Block in the early hours of last Thursday. The accused were apprehended on Friday night after three separate raids around Tangra. "We have arrested the mastermind, Zumrati Molla, and his two associates, Rahim Ali and Rinku Sheikh. We have identified four other suspects linked to this gang, and raids are ongoing to capture them," said an investigating officer from Bidhannagar City Police. The cops have so far not arrested anyone who might have any link with the office thus ruling out the "insider" angle. The accused are in police custody, with officers suggesting they might soon recover a significant portion of the looted cash after questioning them. According to investigators, the same gang struck at a doctor's residence in HB Block (house number 181) on January 12 earlier this year. The gang targeted the doctor's residence when he was not in the city, making off with gold ornaments worth lakhs. "During the investigation of that case, a few members of this gang were arrested by us. However, these criminals managed to get bail in February and resumed their crimes," said the officer. "The accused hail from the Tangra and Tiljala areas. They roam the city on their bikes and strike at any residence they think is unoccupied for the night," said a sleuth. The police studied multiple CCTV footage, spoke to officers who had stopped and chased them in the early hours of Thursday (after they committed the robbery), and used local sources to track them down. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Police said that multiple leads, including CCTV footage and descriptions from officers who had chased them, led to the raids at three different places around Tangra, resulting in the arrests of Zumrati Molla, Rahim Ali, and Rinku Sheikh. In the early hours of Thursday, the accused broke open the lock of a ground-floor office in a two-storey home and stole cash and other items worth close to Rs 50 lakh. The house belongs to an NRI elderly woman who rented out the ground floor to a private firm that runs a dealership of eggs from the building. Following the burglary, while the burglars were fleeing on two motorbikes without number plates, a police patrol team spotted and chased them. However, they brandished a firearm and escaped through alleys and lanes as the officers failed to capture them after a hot pursuit. The incident occurred around 2 am at GC 184 in Salt Lake, where the burglars broke open the locks at the separate exit for the office and entered the premises. They also used an inside staircase to head upstairs and reach the first floor, where the homeowners stay when they come to India. MSID:: 120646025 413 |
