‘Excruciatingly hot': Heat wave expected to end Wednesday ahead of ‘stellar' long weekend

People escape the heat and humidity at Cherry Beach in Toronto, Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paige Taylor White The intense heat that has invaded the city for the past three days is expected to end on Wednesday, clearing the way for a 'stellar' long weekend filled with sunshine and seasonable temperatures, CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter says. The heat warning that was issued over the weekend remains in effect on Tuesday for Toronto, which will see a daytime high of 31 C today, feeling closer to 37 with the humidity. 'Confidence has increased that cooler temperatures will arrive on Wednesday, bringing an end to the heat event,' Environment Canada said in its advisory. Wednesday will still be warmer than normal for this time of year with the mercury rising to 30 V, feeling closer to 35. Thursday will begin a stretch of 'stellar and comfortable weather' that will continue throughout the long weekend, Coulter said earlier this week. Thursday will see mainly sunny skies, low humidity, and a seasonable high of 26 C. Sunshine and comfortable daytime highs of 26 C, 27 C, and 28 C are in the forecast for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively, Environment Canada says. Environment Canada's Dave Phillips said Toronto has seen 'quite a different summer than last year.' Including this week, said Toronto has seen 23 days where the temperature rose above 30 C. At this point last year, Toronto had only seen 10 such days. 'It is something that was predicted, maybe not as excruciatingly hot as this one,' Phillips said on Monday. 'And it came late. We didn't have any days in April and May above 30, we counted them all in June and July.' He said Toronto has seen nearly 60 hours of humidex values above 40. 'We've had more days above 30 in July than we've had not days above 30,' Phillips said. But once the heat breaks in the middle of the week, Toronto and much of Ontario will see the best weather imaginable, he added. 'It's all going to be worth it,' he said, adding there will be 'wall-to-wall sunshine,' seasonable daytime highs, and no inclement weather in sight. 'You couldn't even manufacture a kind of weekend we are going to see.'

Toronto to feel like 41 today as heat event continues

A multi-day heat event will once again bring sweltering weather to Toronto on Monday with temperatures feeling like 41 later this afternoon. Environment Canada says the city will see a daytime high of 33 C today but the humidity will make it feel above 40. 'The hottest conditions are expected today and Tuesday,' the national weather agency said in a heat warning posted online. 'Confidence has increased that cooler temperatures will arrive on Wednesday, bringing an end to the heat event.' Tuesday will see the mercury climb to a high of 31 C, feeling like 38 with the humidity. Overnight lows of between 19 and 21 will provide little relief from the heat, Environment Canada warned. 'It'll be another hot, hazy and humid day today with a moderate breeze,' CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said Monday. 'Similar weather characteristics will be on tap for Tuesday.' During the heat event, officials are urging people to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. 'Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water,' the heat warning read. 'Drink water often and before you feel thirsty to replace fluids. Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside. Turn on air conditioning, use a fan, or move to a cooler area of your living space. If your living space is hot, move to a cool public space such as a cooling centre, community centre, library or shaded park.' 'Stellar and comfortable' long weekend A high of 30 C is expected on Wednesday but cooler conditions arrive on Wednesday night. On Thursday, a seasonal high of 26 C is in the forecast. 'Skies clear and calm Thursday, beginning a stretch of stellar and comfortable weather that will last right through the long weekend,' Coulter said. The national weather agency says Toronto will see sunny skies and daytime highs of 25 C, 26 C, and 27 C on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively.

Hot, humid weather will return to Toronto this week

People escape the heat and humidity at Cherry Beach in Toronto, Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paige Taylor White Heat and humidity are set to come 'roaring back' into Toronto's forecast later this week after a stretch of comfortable weather in the city, CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter says. Coulter said Monday will be a 'bright, beautiful, and seasonably fresh' day with a high of 25 C. A near-identical forecast is on tap for Tuesday. 'Heat and humidity will be roaring back for Wednesday and the remainder of the long-range forecast,' Coulter added. 'With the heat and humidity firing up midweek, we can also expect a return to unsettled skies for the end of the work week. A heat warning will likely be issued for Thursday, with highs expected to be in the low to mid 30s feeling close to 40.' By Wednesday, overnight lows are only expected to drop to the low 20s, providing little nighttime relief. Environment Canada is calling for a high of 30 C on Wednesday, 33 C on Thursday, and 30 C on Friday. 'Enjoy the fresh, comfortable air while it's here,' Coulter said.
