Billy Joel sets the record straight on whether he's had multiple DUIs

Billy Joel has had a few car accidents, but not for the reason many people have believed. In his HBO documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' the 76-year-old seeks to clear up consistent speculation that he has been arrested multiple times for driving under the influence. (HBO is owned by CNN's parent company.) In 2002, Joel crashed a car in East Hampton, New York and less than a year later, he drove into a tree in Sag Harbor which resulted in him having to be airlifted to the hospital. Two years later he crashed into a house in Long Island. The car accidents have been attributed to road conditions and Joel's depressive mental state, and while he has been in rehab before, the singer maintains that he has never gotten a DUI. 'You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip, rumors. I didn't like the tabloid kind of press,' he said in the documentary. 'For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth: 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.'' Joel went into rehab at the Betty Ford Center in 2005 after he said he was given an 'ultimatum' by his then-wife, Katie Lee. He discussed it in 2013 with the New York Times Magazine, but at that time he again denied ever having a DUI. 'I went to rehab in '05 because, when I was with Katie, she said, 'You're drinking way too much.' I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. Look at the police records.'

Billy Joel fires back at persistent DUI rumors that have plagued his reputation for years

Billy Joel set the record straight on longstanding rumors that he was charged with driving under the influence. The "Piano Man" addressed the DUI allegations in his new, two-part HBO documentary, "Billy Joel: And So It Goes." Joel, 76, who was recently diagnosed with a brain disorder, was involved in a number of car accidents over the years, but denied that alcohol had any involvement. "I didn't like the tabloid kind of press. For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs," Joel said, per People magazine. "That never happened." He added, "But people keep repeating the myth. 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.' I never had a DUI. So f--- you." Joel asserted that "the press can be mean," and admitted that "having that much attention paid to you is not easy." The "Movin' Out" musician crashed his car multiple times in a three-year span beginning in 2002. He told the New York Times magazine in 2013 that the incidents were due to his "mental fog," not being under the influence. "I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. Look at the police records," he told the outlet. "My mind wasn't right. I wasn't focused. I went into a deep, deep depression after 9/11. 9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and I don't know even now if I've recovered from it. "It really, really hurt that man could do that to man. And then there was a breakup with somebody, and it took me a while to get me back on my feet again." Joel revealed his normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) diagnosis in May, and said that the condition had been "exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance." The statement at the time continued, "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health." NPH is a condition that happens when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain. This condition is most likely to occur in people over age 65. Treating this condition involves surgery to implant a shunt to drain excess fluid from the inside of the skull, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Joel canceled all of his tour dates earlier this year to recover from a "recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors." The "We Didn't Star the Fire" musician married his fourth wife, Alexis Roderick, during a surprise wedding on July 4, 2015. The couple has two daughters together.

Billy Joel Complements ‘And So It Goes' Documentary Release With 155-Track ‘Musical Companion'

A veritable treasure trove of unreleased and unheard Billy Joel material has arrived alongside the conclusion of the music legend's And So It Goes documentary. Celebrating the life and over 60-year career of the Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Billy Joel: And So It Goes made its debut on HBO on July 18, with its second and final part premiering a week later on Friday, July 25. More from Billboard Pantera Cancel Tour Dates to Mourn Ozzy Osbourne Ed Sheeran Expands 2026 Australia and New Zealand Tour Phil Collins Is in Hospital for Surgery, Not in Hospice, Rep Confirms Just hours after the conclusion of the film, an extensive 155-track 'musical companion' was uploaded to streaming services, compiling six-and-a-half hours of unheard material and live performances from Joel's storied career. Alongside early tracks from his time as a member of groups such as The Hassles and The Lost Souls, the 115 songs are also accompanied by audio clips of Joel and others providing introductions to the following selections. A number of live cuts from notable performances such as Joel's appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test and some recorded the day he signed with Columbia Records, are also present, as is the debut rendition of 'Scenes From an Italian Restaurant' – recorded on May 6, 1977 at C.W. Post College in Long Island. 'I always wanted to write a cinematic type of song about the lives of people I knew in high school,' Joel explains of the song. 'People who peaked too early.' Though never released as a single, the near-eight-minute song was later released on The Stranger that same year and would become one of Joel's most revered songs, along with his most-played. Produced by Steve Cohen, Bradshaw Leigh and John Jackson, the new collection is likely to be accompanied further releases of similarly unheard material in the future. 'There's a ton of stuff that's in his personal vault and there's a ton of stuff that's in Sony's vault, with not a ton of overlap,' Jackson told Ultimate Classic Rock. 'We are determined to go through both things in the coming years. The premiere of the new documentary comes just months after the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer canceled all of his upcoming shows due to his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, writing in a statement at the time, 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.' His team also shared at the time that he would be undergoing 'specific physical therapy' to combat the disorder, which has affected his hearing, vision, balance and performance capabilities. Joel provided an update as to his current health status during an appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random Podcast just last week on July 21. 'I feel good,' he explained. 'They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling.'
