‘Take us home': Birbhum women seek Didi's help in vid appeal from B'desh
1 2 Kolkata: In a video message, members of two Birbhum families pushed to Bangladesh by BSF made an appeal to Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to arrange for their return to India. TOI had earlier reported that six Birbhum residents, including three minors, were nabbed by Delhi cops on June 18 and sent to Bangladesh on June 26. Two habeas corpus petitions were filed in Calcutta High Court. Among the detained were Sweety Bibi and her two minor sons, and Danish Sheikh, his wife Sunali Khatun and their 5-year-old son. "We are not Bangladeshis. We went to Delhi for work but police labelled us Bangladeshis. We showed Aadhaar cards, but Delhi police did not accept them. We are from Birbhum's Paikar, we have our ancestral home there," Sweety and Sunali said in their appeal. The two women and the children stood with folded hands as they spoke. "The police took away our mobile phones and money. They tortured us and sent us here. We have nothing to feed our children, no place to stay. Mamatadidi, please take us back," they said. Pointing out that PM Narendra Modi had spoken extensively about infiltration during his speech in Durgapur on Friday, Islam said: "Despite being Indian citizens, their only 'crime' was speaking Bengali in BJP-governed Delhi, where they lived for years in search of work. Sunali, eight months pregnant, is now wandering helplessly in Bangladesh — punished for being Bengali in a country where her own govt refuses to protect her. " The MP urged Modi: "It is your duty to stand by them and safeguard their rights."

‘Stick to your brief': Trinamool gets tough with Anubrata
1 2 Kolkata: "Do not increase the party's unease, stick to your responsibilities and speak less" was the Trinamool leadership's message to Birbhum's warring netas Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh on Saturday, making it clear that the party's patience was thinning with their constant bickering. TMC functionaries maintained that Mondal had been admonished enough for his abuse and threats at Bolpur IC Liton Halder, pointing out the selective outrage against Trinamool compared to CPM's radio silence on Anil Basu and Binoy Konar and BJP's on Kailash Vijayvargiya. Mondal and Sheikh — who were in Kolkata to attend TMC's July 21 Martyrs' Day preparatory meet at the Bhowanipore party office — met party state president Subrata Bakshi, senior ministers Firhad Hakim and Aroop Biswas, and TMC's Birbhum chairperson and deputy speaker Asish Banerjee. Sources said the two netas were told to stick to their responsibilities and not create roadblocks for each other, which would end up harming the party. They were asked to not do anything that brings disrepute to TMC and frustrates party workers. Mondal and Sheikh were also asked to speak less. Mondal was the party's Birbhum all-powerful district president till he was arrested and imprisoned for a year-and-a-half till his release in Sept 2024. In this interim, Trinamool had formed a five-member core committee, including Sheikh, to helm party affairs in his absence during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. In 2024, TMC easily won the two LS seats Birbhum and Bolpur. After his release, Mondal was drafted in the core committee and asked to chair it but not given independent charge. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "There can be differences of opinion anywhere, in a family or among friends. And here we are talking of a huge party like Trinamool. But whatever be it, we all revere and follow one leader, Mamata Banerjee , and work for Trinamool. Nothing is bigger than that. In the end, everyone will fight for the party." Party MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said: "Whatever perceived differences that were, everything has been resolved." Saturday's meeting also deliberated on the recent controversy surrounding the leaked audio tapes in which Mondal was heard threatening and abusing the Bolpur IC. Mondal questioned how and why the call was recorded and leaked and pointed out how his medical certificate to cops found its way to the media. Mondal was reportedly asked to cool down. Hakim said: "The party has strongly condemned abuses and misbehaviour. Anubrata was asked to issue a public apology and a personal apology (to the police officer) within four hours. The party acted strongly. But why is only Trinamool being asked about it, why aren't similar questions or outrages directed against CPM on Anil Basu and Binoy Konar and BJP on Kailash Vijayvargiya?" Anubrata skips cop summons again; lawyer claims ‘AI plot'
1 2 Suri: Trinamool's Birbhum strongman Anubrata Mondal skipped police summons for a second consecutive day on Sunday. Instead, his lawyer met the investigating officer with a detailed medical report explaining his absence. Mondal has reportedly been advised bed rest for five days. Amid this, TMC suspended the party's Chatra Parishad president Bikramjit Shaw, a Mondal confidante, for six years for attacking Bolpur IC Liton Halder in a now-deleted social media post. Mondal's lawyers and aides, however, cited a "conspiracy" involving "AI" to explain the four-minute purported conversation with Halder, which was littered with threats and abuses directed not only at the officer but also at his wife and mother. Prodded by the party, Mondal has already tendered an "unconditional apology" for his comments. In his tirade, Shaw even dared the IC to act against him. Hurling allegations against the police officer, Shaw claimed that Halder's "illegal acts" will be "punished by the people of Birbhum". I Am Famous Undo Mondal's lawyer Bipad Taran Bhattacharya claimed that he was a "victim of conspiracy", refusing to elaborate citing the ongoing probe. Mondal was first summoned to the Bolpur SDPO on Saturday, failing which he was served a second summons, asking him to present himself by 11am on Sunday. He failed that, too. Around the same time, Bhattacharya reached the police station. Emerging out, Bhattacharya, who was initially very reluctant to respond to reporters' queries, said: "He (Mondal) is very ill." "Anubrata Mondal is a victim of conspiracy. We have faith in law, judiciary, courts and the administration. We have faith in people. Beyond that, I will not say a word," the lawyer said. Asked repeatedly if Mondal would move for anticipatory bail, he said: "I will not speak on it since the matter is sub judice." The fact that Mondal may take a conspiracy alibi became apparent on Sunday morning when a local TMC neta, Debabrata Sarkar, who went to the Bolpur SDPO, told reporters while stepping out that "AI has been used to doctor the audio tape". Sarkar did not elaborate and only said, "He (Mondal) is ill. He is at home." Asked repeatedly whether Mondal told police that AI has been used to doctor the audio, Sarkar responded curtly: "Ask police. I am not here to speak with the media. Mondal will do what the party says. The party will speak on it."
