Reneé Rapp Says Her Name Was Designed for Pop Stardom
Reneé Rapp is leaning into her identity, her artistry, and the name she says was designed for the spotlight. During a new episode of the Good Hang podcast with Amy Poehler, the singer and actor opened up about her early path to pop stardom, revealing that her mother, Denise Rapp, deliberately gave her an alliterative name to help her succeed in entertainment. 'She was like, 'Alliteration, just in case she wants to be a pop star.' Like before I was born.' 'She gave you a pop star name just in case, because Reneé Rapp is a huge pop star name,' Poehler responded. Rapp agreed: 'It's a really good one.' The conversation also touched on Rapp's experience publicly coming out as a lesbian while appearing on Saturday Night Live in January. She recalled asking the writers to revise a line in a sketch that referred to her as a 'little bisexual intern.' 'At that time I was very publicly bisexual,' Rapp said. 'In private, I was talking with my girlfriend and a lot of my friends for the last maybe eight months before that of being like, 'I actually don't really feel very bi at the moment. I feel very much like a lesbian and it feels so nice and that word feels amazing.'' 'Labeling yourself publicly is really, really, really empowering,' she added. 'And also, I think, can be kind of intimidating.' She described the moment as 'pretty c—y' and said it felt 'so f—ing good.' Earlier this week, Rapp debuted a new single titled 'Leave Me Alone' during her live performance at the 2025 American Music Awards. The fiery, guitar-heavy track addresses her frustrations with fame and references her exit from the now-cancelled HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls. 'Signed a hundred NDAs but I still say something / Leave me alone, b—h, I wanna have fun / Took my sex life with me, now the show ain't f—in',' she sings on the chorus. 'Leave Me Alone' marks the first release from Rapp's upcoming sophomore album Bite Me, which is set for release on Aug. 1 via Interscope. The album follows 2023's Snow Angel, which debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at No. 2 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The title track also reached No. 4 on Billboard's Hot Trending Songs chart. Bite Me is out Aug. 1. Reneé Rapp's stardom was written in the stars—at least, according to her mom, Denise Rapp. The powerhouse vocalist appeared on The Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast, where she opened up about her rise to fame and how she became the latest pop girl to transform the scene. She also shared the major way her mom manifested her stardom to begin with, and it all goes back to the year 2000. 'My mom chose my first and last name to be, well, okay, arguably chose my first and last name to both have [two letter R's],' she explained to the Saturday Night Live alum. 'She was like, 'Alliteration, just in case she wants to be a pop star' before I was born.' While Reneé admitted the move was a bit 'conceited,' she shared that she's actually 'obsessed with the way she did it.' 'I'm like, thank you, God,' she added. Amy agreed with the sentiment, saying, 'She gave you a pop star name just in case, because Reneé Rapp is a huge pop star name.' Reneé quipped, 'It's a really good one!' Reneé Rapp is finally getting ready to sink her teeth into her next era. After two years of keeping fans waiting for new music, the singer-songwriter has revealed that she has a new song titled 'Bite Me' arriving later this month. In a saucy video posted to her social media accounts Tuesday (May 13), Rapp faces away from the camera while flexing both of her biceps, her long blonde hair falling down her bare back as she forgoes a shirt or bra. Shaking her head, the Mean Girls actress shows off a backwards baseball cap that reads, 'Bite Me.' The teaser comes nearly two years after she dropped debut studio album, Snow Angel, which debuted at No. 44 on the Billboard 200. Three months after the original LP arrived in August 2023, Rapp unveiled a deluxe edition in November. The following December, the Broadway star teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion for 'Not My Fault' for the Mean Girls musical live action soundtrack. Since Snow Angel, Rapp has been taking her time with her next album while also touring and performing at festivals. In July last year, she opened up about her upcoming second full-length effort in an interview on Instagram's Close Friends Only podcast, saying, '23 to 24 has been such a massive difference for me.' 'It's about this … and to this point, a reflection on my 23rd year specifically … It was so bad, and I thought 22 was insane for me,' she continued. Reneé Rapp lit up the 2025 American Music Awards on Monday night (May 26) with the live debut of her brand new single, 'Leave Me Alone.' Introduced by pal Jake Shane, the Mean Girls star kicked off the performance in front of a crowded, makeshift bathroom mirror with three of her dancers before kicking down the set to reveal the stage at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Reneé Rapp drops new single ‘Leave Me Alone'
star is gearing up for the release of her sophomore album by dropping the LP's lead single entitled 'Leave Me Alone'. The singer has also released a music video to support the track which sees the star accompanied by a slew of blonde doppelgängers as they progress from raunchy pillow-fight to all-out brawl. The lyrics of the song seem to nod at the star's exit from the HBO comedy The Sex Lives of College Girls, as she sings: 'Leave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun. I took my sex life with me, now the show ain't fucking.' Later in the video Rapp can be seen spitting blood with her pantsless comrades. The album Bite Me is released on 1 August. It is the follow up to Rapp's debut album Snow Angel which landed at number seven on the UK Albums Chart. The artist's last single was last year's Lindsay Lohan-sampling collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion for the Mean Girls soundtrack, 'Not My Fault', which Attitude ranked We wrote then: 'Rapp, who has been at the forefront of the recent surge in 'sapphic pop', easily holds her own here with who joins for a killer verse in which she christens herself 'the black Regina George.' I just had such a bad day and just like bad experiences, and I was like I have nowhere else to go with my thoughts because obviously I can't put them outward in this moment, therefore I will be like mentally just writing.'
