From securing brand partnerships to stepping into music and now making his acting debut, the 23-year-old is steadily building on the ambitions he spoke of after his R2 million win. Guluva has joined the cast of 'Black Gold', BET Africa's latest telenovela series, which promises a gripping mix of betrayal, legacy and the fight for power in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal. At the centre of the story is media personality Nomalanga Shozi, who plays Amandla Zungu, a principled daughter of the soil whose life is shattered after being falsely accused of her father's murder. The cast also features Nomsa Buthelezi, Warren Masemola, Zamani Mbatha and many others. 'Black Gold" is a celebration of African storytelling at its finest, rich in culture, layered in emotion, and driven by a stellar cast that brings these powerful characters to life. "At BET Africa, we are committed to showcasing narratives that reflect the beauty, strength, and complexity of black lives. 'This series is a tribute to black resilience, black love, and the unbreakable spirit of our communities,' said Monde Twala, Senior Vice President and GM of Paramount Africa and Lead for BET International. Mandla N, executive director at Black Brain Pictures, added: 'Creating 'Black Gold' was a game-changing experience; it shook us as much as it will shake the audience. "Partnering with BET on this co-production is more than just making a show; it's about reinvesting in our industry, breaking barriers, and taking a bold step forward for local storytelling and long-term growth. 'Black Gold' is raw, emotional, and unapologetically authentic storytelling.' In addition to his acting career, Guluva is also making waves in the music industry. In June, he collaborated with DJ Zinhle on a single titled "Sweet Guluva", which also features Nokwazi and Ndloh. DJ Zinhle revealed that the collaboration stemmed from her admiration for him and a personal connection, as she attended school with his mother, Bongiwe Zwane. The song's isiZulu lyrics celebrate his rise to fame, with a refrain that playfully asks, 'Umuntu onjani lona? Uhlanyisa umhlaba wonke madoda' ('What type of person is this, who captured the hearts of so many?'). When he left the 'Big Brother' house, Guluva shared with 'Independent Media Lifestyle' that he is gunning for every corner of the entertainment industry, from voice-overs and presenting to radio and music. Less than a year later, he is already ticking those boxes, making the most of his moment in the spotlight. "Black Gold' is set to premiere on BET Africa (DStv channel 129) on August 18 at 6.30pm.

5 durians for $488: Punggol residents accuse door-to-door salesman of selling them sour, unripe fruits, Singapore News

They wanted to indulge in the king of fruits but ended up feeling cheated. Two Punggol residents have accused a door-to-door salesman of peddling sour and unripe durians at astronomical prices, reported Shin Min Daily News. One resident, surnamed Chen, who lives at Block 613D Punggol Drive, told the Chinese evening daily that a man had visited her home on July 31 and asked if she was interested in joining a durian group order. "Because he said he lives upstairs, I didn't think much of it and agreed, trusting him," the durian lover explained. Later that day, another man claiming to be a deliveryman rang her doorbell carrying two big sacks of durians. He reportedly offered Chen a 'Musang King' weighing 3kg, and suggested she add another small black thorn durian to her order. But she alleged that the man opened the fruits before weighing them and claimed the two weighed 11.78kg and cost $187. "I was stunned — he clearly said the big durian is 3kg, how did the weight become 12kg after adding the small durian?" Chen asked. After she said her husband will not be happy with her for spending so much money, the man told her that she could pay just $150 if she gave him a drink. When she and her husband prepared to tuck into the durians later, they purportedly found that the flesh in one container was sour, and the flesh in the other was unripe. Calls to the number given by the salesman bounced back, and her messages went unreplied. Residents in the community chat group said they did not know any durian seller living upstairs, leading her to realise it was a scam. $488 for five Black Gold and Musang King durians Another resident living in a nearby block told Shin Min Daily News she had encountered the same salesperson on July 30 and alleged that she ended up paying $488 for five durians that weighed 36kg. The woman, who did not want to be named, said the salesman had similarly identified himself as a neighbour who lives upstairs. After she and her husband indicated their interest, he returned with another man later that night and offered them five durians. The couple said they only wanted to purchase two, but the duo purportedly insisted that the fruit was "specially reserved" and "buy four and get one free". She pointed out that the salespersons had weighed the durians and said it was 36kg and immediately dehusked it, leaving the couple with no time to refuse. "Regarding the durian quality, some were still unripe, and some were a bit sour. The seller said it is the Black Gold and Musang King variants, but the taste makes me doubtful." Similarly, the salesman did not respond to her messages. Both residents have lodged police reports, Shin Min reported. [[nid:685977]]

Sello Maake kaNcube reflects on fatherhood and ambition in BET Africa's 'Black Gold

The legendary Sello Maake KaNcube portrays Tom Motsepe, a mining magnate with a dangerous past on BET Africa's new telenovela 'Black Gold'. Image: Supplied//BET Africa BET Africa this August will be debuting its latest telenovela, 'Black Gold,' which features an all-star ensemble. The series promises a gripping tale of betrayal, legacy, and the fight for power in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal. At the centre of 'Black Gold' is Nomalanga Shozi, who takes on the role of Amandla Zungu, a principled daughter of the soil whose life is shattered by betrayal. She is joined by two of South Africa's most revered performers: SAFTA-winning actress Dawn Thandeka King as the calculating Florence Zungu, and the legendary Sello Maake kaNcube as Tom Motsepe, a mining magnate with a dangerous past. In an interview with IOL, KaNcube broke down his newest character, Tom Motsepe, who is a mine CEO, married and a father to three children; to Zakhele, Andile and (unknowingly) the late Siyabonga. Having been raised by his stepfather and being a father himself, KaNcube has explored fatherhood and its meaning to him as a black man. He shared that it's important for stories to explore the nuanced and underrepresented realities of black fatherhood on screen. 'Fatherhood is a very important issue and it's something that we as the black community battle with. 'When you realise that men go about making babies and not raising them, that becomes a huge problem and I think it's important to impress this need for embodying fatherhood amongst men and especially black men. 'Black men, we need to step up as fathers and as responsible men, but we still have to deal with stories that make us reflect about where we come from, where we are and define where we would like to get to.' Image: Supplied/BET Africa Stepping into a new role is something KaNcube finds fulfilling, even 40 years later in his career and he still looks to tell the emotions that humans experience. He acknowledges that he is constantly learning with every season of his life. KaNcube, over his illustrious career, has had several strong male lead roles from Archie Moroka on 'Generations' to Bra Rex on 'Vula Vala' and even Kgosi on 'The Queen'. He credits the environment set up being different, with his new character being a mining magnate. 'Archie was an alpha male character, but there was quirkiness about him and also the environment that he was in. All these things differ according to the environment that they are set in. 'Tom Motsepe is set as a mining magnate, the way his world is set up, dabbling between two women, and it differs like that. They are never the same and differ according to the world they are set in.' For the legendary actor, his character's desire to achieve is something that stood out for him when he first read the script. 'Tom will pull all the stops to get what he wants and there are no limits.' On 'Black Gold' viewers will get to see Tom Motsepe at a tipping point his company Umnotho Wethu's expansion hinges on seizing the Zungu land, rumoured to sit atop a deposit of rare, black gold. "Black Gold" premieres on August 18, 2025 on BET Africa (DStv Channel 129), airing Monday to Thursday at 18:30, with repeats at 21:30. IOL Entertainment
