"I know where I stand within hierarchy": England's Ollie Pope ignores speculations about his place ahead of India tour

Nottingham [UK], May 23 (ANI): After scoring a ton against Zimbabwe during the ongoing one-off Test, Ollie Pope dismissed the growing speculation about his axing from England's squad in the upcoming five high-stakes Tests against India, scheduled to begin from June 20. Test captain Ben Stokes dropped a compelling hint about including young Jacob Bethell in England's squad, citing his impressive run in New Zealand last year. Bethell's inclusion would likely come at the expense of opener Zak Crawley or the number three Pope, who laboured for runs during the three Tests against the Blackcaps. On the opening day of the one-off Test, Crawley crossed the three-digit mark, which eluded his bat for the first time since July 2023. After being trapped by Sikandar Raza in front of the stumps, Crawley returned with 124(171), and then Pope took centre stage with his masterclass. He struck handsomely above a 100 strike rate, defined the true meaning of 'Bazball' and stayed unbeaten with 169 from 163 deliveries when umpires decided to call the end of the opening day's action. 'Watching those two [Duckett and Crawley] score runs, you don't want to be the one to miss out, so it was nice to get in the flow of things early,' Pope told Sky Sports. After sending a strong message in response to his critics before the squad announcement for the India series, Pope assured that he knows where he stands in the 'hierarchy' and ignores the media and the speculations to ensure his 'mental game' remains unfazed. 'We have had some good conversations, and I know where I stand within the hierarchy, which is always good. Communication is really good. I have learnt along the way not to read too much in the media, especially in the lead-up to a series. It doesn't help me. I try to score as many runs as I can and not let that side impact my mental game,' he added. Pope, who averaged 38.80 and struck 194 runs in three Tests in New Zealand, found his lost mojo and shone in the purple patch. He fired 171 from 166 deliveries before giving away an edge from his lacklustre drive, which flew straight into the wicketkeeper's gloves. As he returned towards the dressing room with a standing ovation from the crowd, Pope became the first batter to score all his eight centuries in Test cricket against eight different oppositions. Virat Kohli impressed in SENA countries with sublime strokeplay, tenacity

New Delhi [India], May 14 (ANI): Virat Kohli, a modern-day Test icon who impressed in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions with his sublime strokeplay and aggression, played his last match in India's last tour of a gruelling Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. It has been two days since Virat penned a heartfelt note to bring the curtains down on his illustrious adventures in Test cricket. While some try to fathom Virat's decision, others relive the ecstacy engulfing them through highlights of some of his memorable knocks. Virat was an unstoppable force on home strip and his exploits in unfamiliar overseas conditions found a special place in the hearts of die-hard cricket fans. From his twin centuries in Adelaide in 2014 to the blockbuster 153 in Centurion in 2018, Virat engraved the formula of scoring runs in his approach. Even though his last tour in Australia wasn't what he is known for, the Indian batting bigwig's comprehensive numbers remain unparalleled. In South Africa, Virat made nine Test appearances and racked up 891 runs at 49.45, laced with two centuries and four fifties. The flamboyant star ended his career as the second-highest run-getter for India in South Africa, behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's 1,161 runs in 15 Tests. He also has the second-highest centuries by an Indian batter next to Sachin's five. In England, Virat struck in 17 Tests and scored 1,096 runs at an average of 33.21, including two centuries and five half-centuries. The batting maestro finished as India's fourth-highest run-getter in England next to Sachin (1,575 runs in 17 matches), Rahul Dravid (1,376 runs in 13 matches) and Sunil Gavaskar (1,152 runs in 16 matches). Virat was likely to break some new records if he had played England next month. For Virat, New Zealand remained a territory that he couldn't venture far into. He played just four Tests on the Blackcaps territory and piled up 252 runs at 36.00, with a century and fifty each. Of the four SENA nations, Australia remained the favourite playground for the former Indian Test skipper. In 18 Tests, Virat scored ferociously and tallied 1,542 runs at an average of 46.72, with seven centuries and four fifties. He is the second-highest run-getter in Australia after Sachin (1,809 in 20 Tests) for India. Overall, in 48 SENA Tests, Virat made 3,781 runs at 41.54, with 12 centuries and 14 fifties. He is third in the list, with Sachin (5,387 runs in 63 Tests) and Dravid (3,909 runs in 46 Tests) being the only stalwarts ahead of him for India. He has the second-highest number of centuries by an Indian in SENA conditions, next to Sachin's 17. Virat's career has been defined by the way he dazzled on the ground to contribute to India's victory. The seasoned batter has the most runs in SENA countries in winning cause, with 811 runs from 10 matches at an average of 42.68, with two centuries and four fifties. During India's famous tour of Australia in 2014-15, Virat piled up 692 runs in four matches at a staggering average of 86.50, with four centuries and a fifty and shattered the record for the most number of runs by an Indian on a SENA tour. In SENA countries, Virat captained 24 matches, won seven, the most by an Indian captain in SENA, and lost 14. He was the first Indian captain to win a series in Australia in Tests 2-1. (ANI)

Mehidy, Muzarabani, Sears nominated for ICC Men's Player of the Month award for April 2025

Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani and New Zealand fast-bowler Ben Sears have been nominated for ICC Men's Player of the Month award for April 2025. Nominated for the first time for the ICC Men's Player of the Month award and aiming to be the first Bangladesh player to win the honour since Shakib Al Hasan did so in March 2023, Mehidy enjoyed a prolific April with bat and ball, ending the two-match Test series against Zimbabwe as the Player of the Series. After picking ten wickets in the opening Test match defeat in Sylhet (5-52 and 5-50), Mehidy then hit 104 in the second game at Chattogram - his second Test century - before clinching another five wicket-haul to ensure the honours were shared. On the other hand, Muzarabani became just the second Zimbabwe bowler to reach 700 rating points in the ICC Men's Test Bowling Rankings in April, reaching the landmark with a Player of the Match performance in the first Test victory over Bangladesh – making this Zimbabwe's first away Test win since 2021. After taking three wickets in the first innings and with a healthy lead of 82 heading into the second essay, Muzarabani ran through Bangladesh's top and middle order to claim 6-72 and set up a thrilling three-wicket victory for Zimbabwe in Sylhet. Sears, meanwhile, made his ODI debut for New Zealand in February and this month saw him shine bright for the Blackcaps. Brought into the playing eleven for the second of three matches against Pakistan, Sears starred alongside Jacob Duffy and Will O'Rourke to unleash a fearsome spell of fast bowling in Hamilton and take his first ODI five-wicket haul (5-59). He then was at his ferocious best in Mount Maunganui, picking figures of 5-34 to help the hosts' claim a commanding 43-run victory and ensure they registered a 3-0 series sweep, with Sears ending up as the Player of the Series for picking 10 wickets at an average of 9.30 while maintaining an economy rate of 5.07.
