Santner named New Zealand Test skipper for Zimbabwe Series

Auckland: Mitchell Santner becomes the 32nd player to lead New Zealand's men's side in Test cricket as regular Blackcaps captain Tom Latham was ruled out of the first Test against Zimbabwe due to a shoulder injury, as per the official website of the ICC. Latham sufferd the injury while fielding in a domestic T20 game in England, and hasn't been deemed fit enough to feature in the playing XI. But the left-handed top-order batter will continue to remain with the squad, with the hope that he regains full fitness ahead of the second Test match against the Chevrons. Santner, who has 1066 runs and 74 wickets from his 30 Tests, assumes the role fresh off a T20I Tri-Series victory in Harare where the Black Caps remained undefeated in the group stage into the finals. Rob Walter, New Zealand head coach, expressed his disappointment for Latham but backed Santner to do well. "It's never great when you lose your captain (Tom Latham), who's a world-class opening batter and a great team man, but that said we're going to work really hard to have him available for the second Test," he said. "We'll continue to assess and see whether a replacement player is necessary, but at this stage we are hopeful that he'll recover in time," he noted. "Mitch (Santner) did a wonderful job with the T20 squad in this recent series. Whilst the format is different, he certainly has the respect of the players and will be supported by some highly experienced Test cricketers, so I trust that he's going to do a great job," Walter said. New Zealand Name Michael Bracewell As Replacement For Glenn Phillips For 1st Test vs Zimbabwe

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has been named as the replacement for injured Glenn Phillips in their first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, scheduled to begin on July 30. Bracewell was initially unavailable for the series due to his commitments with The Hundred. He was named in the squad for the first Test after his schedule allowed him to be available for the series opener. Bracewell is in Zimbabwe as part of New Zealand's T20I tri-series. Phillips was ruled out of the Tri-series and the two Tests after he suffered a right groin injury during the final of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2025 earlier this month. After the first Test, Bracewell will leave Zimbabwe and join the Southern Brave ahead of their first game. "Glenn's injury provided a gap in the Test squad, and Michael is the closest like-for-like replacement. Michael's experience and skillset will be a great asset and allows us to keep the same balance of the team," Blackcaps head coach Rob Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket. "Given he's here with the T20 squad and his availability aligned for the first Test, we're using the opportunity to include him in the squad. We'll get through the first Test and then we'll make a decision whether we'll replace him for the second Test," he concluded. After Phillips was confirmed to miss New Zealand's ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, Walter reflected on the impact of his absence and had said, "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre. Much like Finn (Allen), we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Black Caps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens," Walter added.

Seifert, Rachin and Sodhi help New Zealand thump Zimbabwe before final

Fifties from Tim Seifert and Rachin Ravindra and a four-wicket haul from Ish Sodhi helped New Zealand secure a thumping 60-run win over Zimbabwe to keep their unbeaten run going in the tri-series. After going against the norm and opting to bat first after winning the toss, Seifert and Rachin's 108-run stand helped the Blackcaps post 190 runs for the loss of six wickets. A late cameo from Michael Bracewell helped them set up the big total for the hosts to chase, who ended without a win in the series. advertisementChasing 191, Zimbabwe got bundled out for 130 as Sodhi ended with figures of four for 12 and Matt Henry chipped in with two wickets as well. Zimbabwe were forced to rue the missed chances in the field as they dropped three catches and they were simply blown away by the Blackcaps bowlers as they reduced them to 44 for five by the eighth over. A sixth-wicket stand of 51 between Tony Munyonga and Tashinga Musekiwa gave some respectability to the total. ZIM vs NZ 6th T20I Highlights Richard Ngarava has been Zimbabwe's most successful bowler in this series and almost struck with his second ball when Tim Robinson went for a wild shot and edged one to slips. However, Ryan Burl was unable to hold on. However, Ngarava had the last laugh as he got rid of Robinson soon after. Ngarava then came back at the death to do some damage and end with figures of four for 34. For New Zealand, Seifert cashed in once again on a dropped catch and went on to score his second consecutive fifty. Seifert scored 75 and got good company from Rachin, who scored 63 off 39 balls. The New Zealand opener scored his fifty in just 33 balls and looked very good throughout his knock. Looking for a fast start, Zimbabwe asked Dion Myers to open and he gave them a great start, with some crisp boundaries off Matt Henry. However, his attempt to be a bit more cheeky against Sodhi was his undoing. Henry, who was expensive at the start, came back and was able to get rid of Sikandar Raza and that effectively ended the chase for the hosts. New Zealand will now face South Africa in the final on Saturday, July 26. - EndsMust Watch
