Stephen Colbert reveals the real hairy reason for 'Late Show' firing

"CBS saw my upper lip, and Boom! Cancelled! Coincidence?" Stephen Colbert said on July 21. There are many legitimate reasons why both Stephen Colbert and the "The Late Show" franchise were cancelled by CBS last week. There's the collapse of TV late-night's business model amid rising costs, declining profits, and shrinking viewership. There's Colbert's unrelenting criticism of a thin-skinned president while CBS's parent company, Paramount Global, seeks to finalize an $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media, which requires regulatory approval from the federal government. All of these things could be true. However, "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" host floated another eyebrow-raising theory on July 21, that, while made in apparent jest, shouldn't be brushed away like panini crumbs in Movember: This firing was spurred on by his controversial summer mustache. It was "stashe-ism." More: Stephen Colbert is out at CBS. Is all of late-night TV officially doomed? Stephen takes us behind the 'stache to reveal how his vacation look earned him a new nickname. #Colbert #Mustache #Vacation Colbert returned from summer hiatus to "The Late Show" on July 14, sporting what I charitably referred to as an "unfortunate summer mustache." In his first monologue, the host got way too close to the camera while discussing the ongoing facial hair situation on his upper lip, which he referred to as his "salt and pepper cookie pusher." Sure, Colbert also eviscerated Donald Trump and Paramount in the same monologue, causing consternation in corner offices and likely the Oval Office. Yet as we all know, three nights later, a newly shaven Colbert announced the news of "The Late Show" cancellation to a stunned nation. I'm following the mustache trail. I would have kept quiet on my theory until Colbert blew his own whistle on July 21, which he's able to do now that the 'stache has been removed. "I delivered a blistering monologue during which I had the courage to have a mustache," Colbert said. "CBS saw my upper lip, and Boom! Canceled! Coincidence? Oh, I think not. This is worse than fascism. This is 'stache-ism." A post shared by Henry Cavill (@henrycavill) Hollywood history is filled with great mustache battles, including Tom Selleck's insistence on keeping his as Franl Reagan, the New York police commissioner on CBS's "Blue Bloods." Selleck and his famous facial hair won that battle. Henry Cavill discussed his "mustache fiasco" on his Instagram in 2017, explaining he was compelled to keep his "Mission: Impossible" villain mustache for "Justice League" reshoots as Superman. The bushy beaut was not right for the Man of Steel, obviously. It was digitally and ineffectively removed from "Justice League," a source of online derision. It needs to be pointed out that Cavill is no longer DC's Superman. Coincidence?

Blue Bloods' Donnie Wahlberg teases Baez comeback and more family dinners in Boston Blue

Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg has been talking about the upcoming spin-off Boston Blue, hinting that some familiar faces could be making a return. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Blue Bloods. ‌ Blue Bloods star Donnie Wahlberg has teased not only the potential comeback of his partner and romantic interest Maria Baez but also the possible revival of the beloved family dinner scenes. ‌ The Blue Bloods spin-off Boston Blue, launching on Friday, October 17, on CBS, will track Detective Danny Reagan (portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg) as he begins afresh at Boston's police department. ‌ It's been revealed that Danny's son Sean - now played by actor Mika Amonsen - will be serving as a patrol officer at Boston PD, which could explain the detective's decision to abandon New York. Whilst supporters are delighted to witness the Blue Bloods world continue through the spin-off, many are hoping it won't signal the end of cameos from the Reagan clan and their friends. This includes Danny's colleague Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), whom he eventually invited on a romantic evening in the season 14 finale, leaving viewers curious about what unfolded afterwards. ‌ So far, there's been no official word that Ramirez will return for Boston Blue. Nevertheless, Wahlberg remains highly active on social media, engaging with supporters' remarks and queries about the upcoming programme. ‌ When responding to the actor's post promoting Boston Blue, a fan enquired: "So I guess Danny didn't end up with Baez?" He playfully responded: "How about wait and see? "Excited for this but really hope he's with Baez!" another fan commented, with the actor once again fuelling speculation by replying: "Good idea!" A third viewer speculated: "So he chooses Baez and then just leaves? So is there just going to be a small 'it didn't work out' and then never mention her again? ‌ "Sorry but after 11 years, that's really stupid.." Engaging even with the tougher feedback, Wahlberg quipped: "Wait, that's what happens?" The fact that the 55-year-old hasn't dismissed the possibility of Baez returning for Boston Blue suggests there might be a glimmer of hope for their love story. ‌ Ramirez's absence from other projects on her IMDb page has fans wondering if she's been tied up filming the Blue Bloods spin-off. Danny's romantic future isn't the only thing being hinted at in the run-up to the new show's debut in October. ‌ One of Blue Bloods' most memorable features was the Reagan family's Sunday dinners in each episode, where they'd convene to talk over the week's happenings at Frank Reagan's (Tom Selleck) table. These moments have won the hearts of viewers, many of whom are saddened by the thought that these gatherings might not continue in Boston Blue, given Danny and Sean's relocation. Addressing a fan's lament about missing the Sunday dinners, which were integral to Blue Bloods, Wahlberg responded: "Let's see what happens," teasing the possibility of more family meals in the upcoming series. ‌ The Reagan family's iconic Sunday-night dinner ritual might be scaled down due to the new location, but there's a chance a smaller version will continue. On Instagram, Wahlberg teased fans with the possibility of old cast members making a comeback. He shared: "Boston Blue is a brand new chapter built on a strong foundation with all the same heart, with all the same heart and all the same family at its core." For the moment, eager viewers will have to be patient to discover the extent of Boston Blue's connection to its predecessor.

Blue Bloods legend lands next TV role alongside Scandal and Ozark stars

Blue Bloods was axed after 14 years on CBS at the end of 2024, much to fans' dismay. A Blue Bloods stalwart has secured his next gig acting alongside the stars from Ozark and Scandal. ‌ Len Cariou, who played the patriarch Henry Reagan, father to Frank Reagan (portrayed by Tom Selleck) since the show's inception in 2011, is moving on to new ventures. ‌ To the disappointment of Blue Bloods fanatics, the beloved CBS series was axed after a 14-season run last year, sparking curiosity about the cast's future endeavours. ‌ While Donnie Wahlberg is set to return as Danny Reagan in the spin-off Boston Blue, his on-screen grandfather Len Cariou has bagged a fresh role. The veteran Blue Bloods actor is slated to appear in MGM+'s forthcoming eight-part comedy series American Classic, which boasts an array of well-known actors. ‌ American Classic centres on the "notorious narcissist" Broadway luminary Richard Bean (Kevin Kline), who heads back to his roots following a very public breakdown. His intention is to revisit the family-owned theatre where he first honed his acting chops, but discovers it's no longer under the stewardship of his father and erstwhile artistic director Linus Bean (Cariou). Instead, Richard's sibling Jon (Jon Tenney) and Jon's spouse, also the local mayor (Laura Linney), have transformed the venue into a "low-rent dinner theatre serving roast beef and murder mysteries". ‌ Determined to rescue both the town and the theatre, Richard decides to stage an American classic at the dinner theatre, with himself both starring in and directing the production. Cariou is set to play the role of Richard and Jon's father Linus, who is described as an "actor, a puppet maker and the founder of the Millersburg Festival Theater". ‌ The Blue Bloods star will be acting alongside A Fish Called Wanda's Kevin Kline, who plays Richard Bean, Scandal's Andrew Nichols actor Jon Tenney, and Laura Linney, known for her roles in Ozark and Love Actually. Interestingly, Cariou wasn't the initial choice for American Classic; he's stepping in as a substitute. The part was initially offered to Emmy nominee Harris Yulin, who sadly passed away on June 10 at the age of 87. While a release date has yet to be confirmed, it's reported that the series is slated to begin production in New Jersey in 2025.

‘Blue Bloods' star Bridget Moynahan to appear on premiere of spinoff ‘Boston Blue'

Bridget Moynahan is set to reprise her role as Erin Reagan in the premiere episode of 'Boston Blue', the much-anticipated spinoff of the long-running CBS police drama 'Blue Bloods'. The network confirmed Friday that Moynahan will also direct an episode later in the first season, continuing her behind-the-camera work from the original series. The news was also shared by the lead actor Donnie Wahlberg via his Instagram, who wrote, 'So excited to have my dear friend, and TV sister @bridgetmoynahan, join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of #BostonBlue! (sic).' Her guest appearance will reunite her with Donnie Wahlberg, who returns in the lead role as Detective Danny Reagan. The spinoff series shifts the franchise's setting from New York City to Boston and focuses on Danny's transition to the Boston Police Department, alongside a new cast of characters. 'Boston Blue' will also introduce Sean Reagan, Danny's son, as a new patrol officer in Boston. However, in a surprising move, the role of Sean — played by Andrew Terraciano across nearly the entirety of Blue Bloods' 14-season run — has been recast. Mika Amonsen, known for roles in 'Suits' and 'Reacher', will take over the character. No reason has been given for the casting change, and both CBS and Terraciano have remained silent on the matter. The actor's only public comment was a farewell message shared after filming wrapped in 2024. Joining Wahlberg and Amonsen in 'Boston Blue' are Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Peters. The Silver family appears set to play a central role in the new drama. Bridget Moynahan's dual contribution — both in front of and behind the camera — underscores CBS's effort to keep a strong link to the original 'Blue Bloods' legacy while introducing fresh stories and perspectives in a new city.

Sean will work as a patrolman for the Boston Police Department, according to Deadline. 'Blue Bloods' aired its series finale in December after 14 on CBS. At the time, Wahlberg penned a touching tribute to the police procedural and a love note to the show's loyal fans. 11 Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan and Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan. CBS via Getty Images 'Dearest Blockheads,' the actor began on Instagram. 'There is, of course, a sadness in saying goodbye to #BlueBloods. But what a heck of a ride we had together! You all were literally part of the Blue Bloods family! Not just on Friday nights (trending #BlueBloods every single week that it's been on the air), not just in your impact on the Ratings (which was massive), you all made yourselves an actual part of the crew.' Wahlberg added that everyone on the set 'knew you, appreciated you and was happy to see you.' 'None — more than me. Of all the memories, highlights and moments, that I'll look back on fondly from the last 14 years of filming #BlueBloods in New York City, your set visits will be something that I'll cherish forever,' he shared. 11 Donnie Wahlberg as NYPD Officer Danny Reagan. CBS Entertainment The New Kids On The Block member went on to recall his cherished memories of viewers. 'You brought smiles, gifts, cupcakes (even though I was staying in shape for NKOTB tours), candy (too many Coffee Crisps and Kinder to mention), hugs, signs, inspiration and of course love. Some visitors — did not miss a season,' Wahlberg detailed. 'Some visitors — we now miss so dearly.' 'I keep closing my eyes, and seeing your faces, as I'm writing this. I'm so thankful to you all. Please know that my heart is full. I can go on forever, about you, but it's time to stop writing and to simply let these memories live. I thank you. I love you. I appreciate you. I salute you,' he continued before writing a sweet sign-off. 11 Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) meets with Danny Reagan, (Donnie Wahlberg) in the 'Blue Bloods' scene. CBS 'My Blockhead/BlueBloods Family. See you on the next adventure. Coming soon.' Selleck, 80, however, didn't hold back from sharing his disdain over the end of the beloved series. 'I'm kind of frustrated,' the Emmy winner told TV Insider in October. 'During those last eight shows, I haven't wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.' Selleck pointed out that the show still had strong ratings, as well. 11 Bridget Moynahan and Donnie Wahlberg. JOJO WHILDEN 'I'm not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, 'Get off my lawn!' I don't believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, 'Here's a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,' it would be almost impossible to believe.' Selleck continued, 'My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It's going to take a long time to sort all of this out.' Despite his disappointment, the 'Magnum P.I.' star isn't done yet. 11 A scene from the CBS series 'Blue Bloods.' CBS via Getty Images He told Town & Country in May, 'I hope there's another Western in my future. Certainly whatever happens with 'Blue Bloods,' I'm not going to stop acting.' Meanwhile, that same month, Wahlberg admitted he did everything he could to save 'Blue Bloods' before accepting the show's fate. 'When it ended, we thought, 'Okay, some of the network's gonna come and say, let's keep going.' And nobody came, and it was kind of like we were all in denial about it,' he told Fox News Digital. Wahlberg said that the opportunity for him to produce 'Boston Blue' then came along. 11 A March episode of 'Blue Bloods.' JOJO WHILDEN 'It was heavy, you know?' the singer confessed. 'It's, like, how do I do this? Like, how does [his character] Danny Reagan carry on? You know, how do we create this new world for this character, and how do we do it in another city, not in New York?' Wahlberg mentioned that everyone involved in 'Blue Bloods' — both in front of and behind the camera — was so important to him. 'They became part of our family,' he said. 'You know, the viewers are saying, like, 'How do we keep going with a Blue Blood spinoff without the whole family?' And I share that. How do we do that, right?' Wahlberg made the decision to move forward with the new project. 11 Donnie Wahlberg as Officer Danny Reagan. CBS 'It was definitely a challenge to take on this opportunity, but I kept saying to myself, you know, if I'm really sincere about wanting 'Blue Bloods' to carry on, here's an opportunity to do it,' he detailed. 'Now, it's just Danny going to this new world, but I can't say a lot about it — but I could say, if he's a Reagan, it will never be just Danny. There'll always be a Reagan a phone call away. And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn't abandon those traditions.'
