Paul Whitehouse insists his and Bob Mortimer's BBC fishing series was a 'success' because it was based on 'real life' - after they both underwent life-changing heart surgery

Comedy legend Paul Whitehouse has insisted his and Bob Mortimer 's BBC series Gone Fishing was a 'success' because it was based purely on 'real life' situations. The series saw the double act embark on many fishing trips together around the UK as they opened up about their respective life-changing heart surgeries. Last One Laughing star Bob, 65, underwent bypass surgery in 2015 when his heart was stopped for 32 minutes after discovering that 95 per cent of his arteries were blocked. Meanwhile, Paul, 67, had part of his colon removed nearly two decades ago and also had three stents put in his heart after an operation. Speaking on Dr Oscar Duke's new health podcast Beside Manners, Paul spoke of the pair's friendship and hardship they've suffered over the years. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Paul said he first discovered the idea of turning their surgeries into entertainment when he and Bob went on a fishing trip and 'had a daft laugh' together. He said: 'We started going out a few more times and it was one day in particular, I think it was a really beautiful day in May, and the river was idyllic and the flies were hatching, and the reed warblers were warbling. 'We just made each other laugh. Had a daft laugh as Bob would say, and I thought, oh this might be a good idea for a program. 'Anyway, it worked with the BBC and they let us do a little trial and they seemed to go for it and the reason it's been successful is exactly as I outlined there because it came 100% out of real life.' Last summer, Bob was left unable to walk for half of the newest series of his show Gone Fishing after he contracted shingles. Bob suffered wasted muscles after a six-month bout of the virus and had to be taken by wheelchair to several of the locations. Describing the toll Bob's surgery had on him, Paul said: 'I don't want to speak for Bob, but obviously it was difficult. 'The family were very supportive but he found that road to recovery very slow physically and I think mentally as well.' Speaking on Dr Oscar Duke's new health podcast Beside Manners, Paul spoke of the pair's friendship and hardship they've suffered over the years During an appearance on Kathy Burke 's Where There's A Will, There's A Wake podcast, Bob explained that he no longer feared death. The TV personality explained: 'I don't feel scared about death, I just feel so frustrated and sad to think I won't see how stories end.' Bob added: 'My children's story. My wife's. The football. All the stories going on in the world that you're going to miss the end of.' Speaking about his experience, he said: 'I did see the light at the end of the tunnel. I experienced going towards the light and feeling happier than I have ever felt, ever. 'It was quite extraordinary, and then I woke up a day later and I was OK. I thought, "This is great. I no longer fear death and everything."' Bob secretly married his wife Lisa Matthews just half an hour before undergoing heart surgery. The comic arranged to wed his long-term partner on the day of his operation after being warned he was 'incredibly ill'.

"Celebrity Traitors" Has Confirmed Its Full Line-Up

The Traitors bosses have finally confirmed the line-up for the show's first ever celebrity outing. Rumours about the famous contestants have been circulating ever since the show was first announced to be in the works over the summer, with the tabloid press publishing a supposed 'leaked' list of contestants when filming got underway in April. On Tuesday evening, the BBC revealed that this list was pretty much spot-on (albeit with one disappointing omission in the form of Bob Mortimer, who had previously been tipped to be taking part). The 19 contestants on the line-up are: Alan Carr (comedian) Cat Burns (singer-songwriter) Celia Imrie (actor) Charlotte Church (singer-songwriter) Clare Bading (sports broadcaster) David Olusoga (historian) Joe Marler (former rugby pro) Joe Wilkinson (comedian) Jonathan Ross (presenter) Kate Garraway (presenter) Lucy Beamont (comedian) Mark Bonnar (actor) Nick Mohammed (actor and comedian) Niko Omilana (influencer) Paloma Faith (singer-songwriter) Ruth Codd (actor) Stephen Fry (actor and presenter) Tameka Empson (actor) Tom Daley (retired Olympic diver) Now, one question we've always had about the proposed Celebrity Traitors is exactly how seriously the famous contestants would be taking the game, if there wasn't a cash prize on the line. However, it's now been revealed that the famous Traitors and Faithfuls will be playing the game in the hopes of winning a share of a potential £100K cash prize for a charity of their choice – all under the watchful (and heavily made up) eye of Claudia Winkleman. Claudia said: 'We're incredibly lucky these brilliant people have said yes. I'd love to say we'll take it easy on them and they'll just wander round the castle and eat toast for a couple of weeks but that would be a lie.' A specific airdate is yet to be confirmed, although Celebrity Traitors will air on the BBC in the autumn, ahead of the regular series' return in its usual January timeslot.

Traitors fans 'gutted' one rumoured celebrity won't be taking part

The new line-up for the highly anticipated Celebrity Traitors has finally been announced, but fans have been left 'devastated' by one star's absence. Since the first Traitors series aired in 2022, viewers have been hooked by the show's devilish premise as contestants aim to figure out who is a traitor and who is a faithful inside a luxurious Scottish castle. The BBC One reality show has continued to smash viewing records, with its season 3 finale drawing in an incredible 7.4million viewers in January. Now, after months of speculation, 19 famous faces – including household names like Alan Carr and Stephen Fry – will take to the round table to try and win £100,000 for their chosen charity. However, fans have shared their fury on social media after it was confirmed that Would I Lie To You star Bob Mortimer will not be taking part. Writing on X, @JamesandMikeyx said he was 'gutted' that Bob would not be featuring. @ShereenBenahmed also wrote: 'Devastated that Bob Mortimer isn't doing #TheTraitors. I didn't need another reminder not to get my hopes up but yet here I am.' Want to get all the latest news and predictions for the best and most dramatic show this new year? It's probably because I'm still annoyed that Bob Mortimer isn't involved and also that I would have liked to have seen other celebs involved, not an online content creator I haven't heard of before.' Metro's TV reporter, Milo Pope, shares his thoughts on Bob's omission … Who do we need to blame? The BBC? Bob's agent? Bob himself? We need answers… now! How on earth was Bob -a man who represents everything a Celebrity Traitor should be, the ultimate liar – not signed up to the show months ago? When ideas were being thrown around by producers for this series, surely, surely , Bob Mortimer's name had to be the first they had in mind? So what's happened? Is it a budget issue? Did Bob not feel up for it? Whatever happened, the comedian's absence in this series has left a gaping hole. There's no doubt that Traitors is the best game show on television, but to have Mortimer dangled in front of us by rumours only then to be snatched away is deflating. Other contestants, such as Stephen Fry and Joe Wilkinson, will surely bring some laughs, but there seems to be no replacement for the funnyman. It almost seemed like the show was too perfect for him, too tailored to his wits and comedic timing. Perhaps that's why he may have passed? Whatever happened, I want the BBC to know that I'm hurt, as are thousands of other Traitors fans. Will I still watch the Celebrity Traitors? Absolutely. @benmurray95 also said: 'Good lineup but fuming as I thought Bob Mortimer was meant to be in it!' @JadeSChadwick echoed this sentiment, writing: 'Dreams of celeb traitors x Bob Mortimer DASHED.' @Prncss_Marigold added: 'A public outcry as Bob Mortimer's name is not on the list!' In the weeks leading up to the BBC's official announcement, Mortimer seemed to be a perfect fit given his skillfulness in deceiving David Mitchell on Would I Lie To You. He has also been a major hit on another reality game show: Amazon Prime Video's Last One Laughing. More Trending Despite his omission, fans of the series can still look forward to seeing the likes of Jonathan Ross, Joe Marler, Clare Balding, and Tom Daley take part. In a statement, host Claudia Winkleman told viewers: 'We're incredibly lucky these brilliant people have said yes. 'I'd love to say we'll take it easy on them and they'll just wander round the castle and eat toast for a couple of weeks, but that would be a lie.'
