Which airline has the biggest or oldest fleet? Here's how Delta, United, American and Southwest compare.

United Airlines With 1,023 planes, United Airlines has the largest fleet in the world, according to data from Ch-aviation. More than half of those are Boeing 737s, which is unsurprising given that United is the planemaker's biggest customer. Unlike its legacy competitors, United shows a clear preference for Boeing planes. Airbus jets make up less than a fifth of its fleet. United's oldest plane that's still flying is a 34-year-old Boeing 767. Registered as N641UA, it was delivered in April 1991. While this is nearly two years younger than the oldest plane operated by a US airline, United has the oldest fleet with an average age of 15.8 years. It also has the highest proportion of wide-body planes at 22% of its fleet, showing how its extensive network offers numerous long-haul flights. Delta Air Lines Delta Air Lines has the oldest plane still flying in the US — a Boeing 757 that was delivered just over 35 years ago. It's registered as N649DL and appears to typically operate charter flights. In fact, Delta also owns the next 21 oldest aircraft, which are a mix of 757s and 767s delivered between 1989 and 1991. However, the average age of its fleet is still slightly younger than United's, at 15.2 years. About half its 979 planes were made by Boeing, and half by Airbus, per Ch-aviation data. Boeing jets make up the bulk of its narrow-body aircraft, but if you're flying long-haul with Delta, it's more likely you'll find yourself on an Airbus. In fact, Delta is the only carrier on this list to operate wide-body Airbus planes, namely the A330 and the A350. Tariffs have complicated its orders from the European planemaker. Earlier this month, Airbus sent an A350 from its delivery center in Toulouse, France, to Tokyo, so Delta avoided paying tariffs. A similar tactic was used five years ago, when the World Trade Organisation permitted tariffs on aircraft as high as 15%, as the US and European Union accused one another of unfair subsidies for Airbus and Boeing. American Airlines American Airlines also has a roughly even split between Airbus and Boeing planes. Although the carrier only uses narrow-body Airbus planes, it has both short and long-haul Boeing jets. Still, American uses more narrow-body planes than its competitors, representing 87% of its fleet. Its average jet is also more than a year younger than its two rivals, at 14.1 years old. It has the smallest fleet of the three mainline carriers, totaling 988, per Ch-aviation data. However, when its regional subsidiaries are included, the American Airlines Group carries the most passengers in the world, totaling 226.4 million last year. Southwest Airlines The Dallas-based carrier was the progenitor of the budget airline business model, so its fleet makeup is quite different from that of the mainline carriers. Southwest 's fleet is made up entirely of Boeing 737 jets, numbering 802, according to data from Ch-aviation. So while it has the smallest fleet of the big four, they all have a similar number of narrow-body planes. Budget airlines typically only operate one type of aircraft because it saves on maintenance and training costs. However, its traditional business model has come under threat in recent years. Budget airlines have had to contend with changing consumer habits, increased fuel and labor costs, and domestic overcapacity that has made it harder to fill planes. So, Southwest has announced an array of changes, scrapping signature policies such as " two bags fly free" and bringing in assigned seating.

South African president was ‘Zelenskyed' on Trump's home turf

Cyril Ramaphosa must have prepped for an awkward meeting. After all, just a week earlier the Trump administration chartered a Boeing 767 to fly 59 Afrikaner farmers out of his country so they could claim refugee status amid allegations that the white population faced a genocide. But he may not have reckoned with Donald Trump's sense of theatre. 'Turn the lights down and just put this on,' he directed his aides in the Oval Office. 'It's right behind you.' Ministers, reporters, two of the greatest golfers of all time, and the world's richest man craned their necks to watch as the room exploded with the sounds of Julius Malema, a fringe South African politician, singing and dancing to 'Dubul' ibhunu.' The translation of the Xhosa title leaves nothing to the imagination: 'Kill the Boer – Kill the Farmer.' Nothing in Mr Ramaphosa's briefing notes could have prepared him for this cauldron, as Mr Trump went to town, narrating another portion of video that he said showed more than a thousand burial sites of white farmers. The American president was thin on detail, but none of that mattered. His guest had been well and truly 'Zelenskyed,' ambushed in the Oval Office in front of rolling TV cameras. Whatever the merits of the arguments, a president who sees the world in zero sum terms was going to walk away with the win. The presence of an extra set of journalists, from South African media, crammed behind the sofas, raised the temperature and the sense of excitement. It was the closest thing to a cage fight that you'll ever see in daylight hours – perhaps no coincidence given that Steven Cheung, the White House director of communications, previously worked for the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Las Vegas. Credit: Reuters The South Africans had done everything right. Mr Ramaphosa arrived with golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, a surefire way to curry favour with a golf nut in the Oval Office and a nimble way to change the subject if needed. He even brought Johann Rupert, a luxury goods magnate and the sort of billionaire that Mr Trump admires. Facing them was Mr Trump's own South African billionaire, in the form of Elon Musk. This time, the president needed no help from him, instead calling on Natalie Harp, the blonde aide nicknamed his human printer, to deliver the first blow. 'We have news stories,' said Mr Trump, as he looked for printouts of murders in South Africa. 'Is Natalie here?' With the lights dimmed and the video rolling, a thick sheaf of paper arrived at the president's side. His host flicked through news reports bound together with golden paperclips, listing the contents: 'Death, death, death, horrible death, death.' His guest resorted to holding up his hand, trying to get a word in as Mr Trump continued his steamroller act. 'Let me clarify,' said Mr Ramaphosa, as he tried to describe how the video had no connection to his government or its policies, that no one had the right to steal land or commit murder. But clarification doesn't really help visitors to the Oval Office. It is Mr Trump's home turf, where portraits of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan look down on him, surrounded by new golden mouldings and statues, and where he revels in the tight, intimate quarters. In front of him, on a coffee table, stood a model of a much delayed new Air Force One, ordered by Mr Trump during his first term. 'I'm sorry I don't have a plane to give you,' said Mr Ramaphosa. Delta Airlines Reveals Plans to Broaden Luxury Appeal This Summer

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Delta Airlines is upping the appeal of its most premium cabin with a fresh amenity kit and bedding, designed in partnership with Italian label Missoni. The Delta One branded seats, available on Boeing 767, Airbus A350 and Airbus A330 planes flown by the U.S.-based carrier, are the company's priciest offering. The company recently rebranded its seat categories: Delta Main (formerly Main Cabin), Delta Comfort (formerly Delta Comfort+), Delta First (Formerly First Class), Delta Premium Select and Delta One. Delta One seats provide each customer direct aisle access in addition to bed-like recline functionality and a variety of seating positions including a recliner-like leg rest. In an effort to refine its Delta One offerings, Delta conducted research and studied customer feedback to better understand its clients' sleep experiences. The hardness of seats, even those that recline flat into a bed, is a common pain point for many customers on long-haul flights. "In travel, every moment matters – not just where you're going, but how you get there," said Mauricio Parise, vice president of brand experience at Delta, in a press release. "We want you to savor your time in the air, which is why we are intentional about each detail of the customer experience to create a sense of home in every space, which is instantly elevated with Missoni's iconic, signature designs." The Missoni fashion label is noted for its use of color and patterns, which is reflected in the new kits and bedding. It has been nearly a year since the airline launched its partnership with Missoni, bringing new amenity kit design to flights globally. Now, a new kit debuts. It features similar offerings but in a classic cosmetics case shape rather than the firm rectangular kit offered today. Inside, it includes blue or cream Missoni crew-length socks, an eye mask, a pen with metal accents and Delta One branding, Grown Alchemist skincare products, a Bamboo toothbrush, Mavis toothpaste and earplugs. "In crafting the next generation of our amenity kit we embraced our signature artistry, blending patterns, textures and hues to create a kit that's distinct, enduring, and designed to suit your lifestyle beyond your time on the plane," said Alberto Caliri, Missoni creative director in a press release. Missoni branded slippers will be introduced to Delta One flights later this year, replacing the gray slippers currently available in the cabin. The carrier's bedding is also getting a refresh. Delta One travelers will now have access to a Missoni duvet and white sleeping pillow, which features a zigzag design with navy accents. Delta will also expand its mattress pad availability to any flights over 12 hours and add a memory foam cuddle pillow. United's Polaris premium offering has a cuddle pillow similar to what Delta will offer but not a mattress pad. The new Delta One bedding set will launch on international flights this summer and will be rolled out across all Delta One flights by the end of 2025. Delta flies some Delta One routes between its East and West Coast hubs.

SURPRISE SIGHT Not a golfer, I went for a wander with the other two from one end of the town to the other, taking in the incongruous sight of a Boeing 767 lying in a field with a train carriage. A Google search jogged my memory that the plane had arrived via a two-day journey up the coast on a barge from Shannon with the intention of using it as the centrepiece of a glamping village. That plan did not quite come to fruition but it certainly provides a talking point and presumably bewilderment for some visitors. At the far end of town, there was an indoor craft market in the old church which is on every Saturday. We regrouped at the Offshore Coffee & More container just behind the dunes for a delicious acai bowl and coffee, further lining our stomachs for our biggest exertion of the day - the Kiltimagh Velorail. RAILWAY TO GO The railway line through the But, in 2023, it welcomed passengers back on railbikes. GO: ENNISCRONE Get there: Enniscrone is roughly a three-hour drive from Dublin. The nearest train station is Ballina (19km) and airport Knock (57km) Stay: Ocean Sands Hotel, with rooms from €129. On the main street, with the beach at its back door. To Do: Outdoor activities including watersports with Tonnta Adventure; if you want to venture further afield, try Kiltimagh Velorail. It is a great repurposing of an amenity which was lying idle and, for €40 for the railbike which seated all five of us, you get an affordable leisurely meander through the countryside on a 9km roundtrip route. It was the first day of the 2025 season when we were there but it already had an impressive number of bookings. Just make sure to freewheel when the opportunity presents, though, because remember you have to go back up that slope you benefitted from on your outward trip on your return. After all that hard work, it was time for a pint. We had one in Gilroy's after the 40-minute drive back, and the following day tried the Pilot Bar and also watched a match in McNulty's. We did not quite make it to Hopkins but sure that provides solid grounds for a return visit. HIGH-QUALITY FOOD There were no quibbles with dining in the same place two nights in a row with ample variety of high-quality food available on both the adult and child menus with Tricia ensuring we were well looked after with manager Jennifer also dropping by for a chat. We were a little early in the year for the full range of outdoor activities that Enniscrone has to offer to be available but Tonnta Adventure can provide surfing, hiking, biking as well as team-building exercises. Another reason to go back. In the absence of those, we got to explore what one might do if your energy levels were not quite up to the above. So I treated myself to a full body massage in the hotel's Ocean Spa whilst my wife opted for a seaweed bath, for which Enniscrone is renowned. FUN FOR ALL AGES For the younger members of our crew, a trip to the WaterPoint Aqua Park was a fine alternative. There, they got to try out the climbing wall, obstacle course and slide in the playroom before decamping to the pool where the slide, kids pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi ensure that all ages are well catered for. Bulgaria was beckoning for me so I headed home early whilst the remainder stayed on for another idyllic evening. 5 There is fun for the whole family on this getaway to Sligo 5 The family even got a bit of a history lesson on the trip
