Guwahati-bound Indigo flight ‘misapproaches' runway at LGBI Airport

1 2 Guwahati: A Guwahati-bound IndiGo flight, 6E-187, from Dibrugarh on Sunday reportedly 'misapproached' the runway at LGBI Airport during its landing at around 3:40 pm and immediately took off again, before finally touching down safely 15-20 minutes later in its second attempt. After hovering in the sky for about 15 to 20 minutes following the 'misapproached' first landing attempt, passengers said that the flight landed safely on the second attempt. "Whenever the pilot feels there is some misapproach, he can take a go-around before making a second landing attempt," an IndiGo spokesperson said, referring to the Guwahati incident. The official, however, said that go-around was a 'routine' affair. "It's a safe and a routine manoeuvre," the official said. According to the IndiGo spokesperson, whenever the pilot experiences any disturbance during landing or feels it's not safe to land at the present situation, the pilot takes one go-around and then tries to land the plane again. State cabinet minister Bimal Borah, who was among the passengers on the flight, said they panicked as it was a 'rough landing' in its first attempt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo "The flight initially landed with just the rear wheels of the aircraft touching the runway. It was a very rough landing and immediately the pilot took off again. We were clueless and I asked the air hostess what happened. I was told it was a 'misapproach,'" Borah said. The minister said he thought some other flight might have arrived on the runway and so their flight denied permission to land. "Our flight landed after around 20 minutes again and during that time it was probably hovering above the Guwahati sky," he said. Borah said the pilot had announced that the second attempt to land will be after 10 minutes. "Passengers panicked, but finally it was a safe landing," Borah said. Assam film actress arrested in hit-and-run case as victim dies

Assamese film actress Nandini Kashyap, who played the lead role in the recent box office hit 'Rudra', was arrested on Wednesday for a hit-and-run accident, in which a 21-year-old man was killed, police said. Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah told PTI that the actress was arrested around 1.30 am after being detained on Tuesday. 'We have produced her in the court and sought five days of police remand. We are waiting for the court order now,' he said. The accident took place at Dakkhingaon area in the early hours of Friday, when an SUV allegedly driven by the actress hit a two-wheeler, Borah said. 'Samiul Haque, who was riding the two-wheeler, was critically injured. He was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. From there, he was taken to Apollo Hospital for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries yesterday,' he added. The DCP said the initial FIR did not name the actress, who was called for questioning the next day of the accident. 'The earlier sections were bailable. However, with the victim dying, we added non-bailable sections in the case and arrested her,' he said. When asked why the police did not take action earlier, Borah claimed that the traffic branch did not know about the accident. A CCTV footage of the accident showed that Haque, a student of Nalbari Polytechnic Institute, was run over by the speeding SUV. Eyewitnesses claimed that the actress did not stop to check on the victim and instead fled from the scene. Friends of Haque, who was returning home after repairing streetlights of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), chased down the SUV to an apartment complex at Kahilipara and confronted her. Borah said, 'Kashyap's vehicle was penalised several times for speeding and many challans were issued in different districts.' Meanwhile, forensic experts were called for examination of the two vehicles. They have done a preliminary survey, and a report is expected within the next seven days, an official said. Haque hailed from a poor family and was supporting his education by working part-time with the GMC.

Docs in Assam highlight urgent need for workplace safety

Guwahati: On Doctor's Day, the poignant theme "Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?" casts a spotlight on the mental health struggles of medical practitioners. In Assam, healthcare professionals are voicing an urgent call for robust support systems, particularly emphasizing the need for protection against physical attacks during their duty hours. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the theme underscores the mental and emotional hurdles doctors face, they assert that a secure work environment is crucial for their mental well-being. Medical organizations, including the Indian Medical Association (IMA), stress the importance of nurturing a supportive atmosphere, especially in light of the repeated incidents of violence against doctors in Assam's rural areas over the years. Healthcare professionals are advocating for a central legislation to tackle violence, proposing a link between the Assam Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2011, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions to ensure stringent punishment for offenders. "Doctors encounter numerous challenges in their professional lives. Almost every doctor experiences some form of violence or difficulty during their career, whether it's physical violence, verbal abuse, or offensive language over the phone. These challenges create mental dilemmas that impact their professional skills and careers," explained Dr Satyajit Borah, a respected senior doctor from Tezpur. He pointed out that doctors often work eight-hour shifts, sometimes extending late into the night. "They make significant sacrifices, while others in different professions of their age enjoy leisure. They also sacrifice family life and recreational activities. If society cannot ensure their well-being, it is truly unfortunate," he said. "We have lost many colleagues prematurely due to acute myocardial infections, and suicides are not uncommon. Doctors are notoriously bad at being patients themselves, so their health is paramount. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Society must also care for doctors to enable them to provide effective healthcare services," Borah added, emphasizing the need for attention to both physical and mental well-being to maintain a healthy environment. Despite over 20 states having legislation against violence in healthcare establishments, its effectiveness is questioned by medical professionals. Borah, who led IMA's Assam chapter during some of the state's most severe assaults on doctors, insisted that medical organizations are pushing for centralized legislation to ensure nationwide consistency, a demand that should be met. IMA's honorary state secretary, Dr Atul Kumar Kalita, called for strict enforcement of the state's 2011 Act, which prescribes three-year imprisonment and fines up to Rs 50,000. "Recently, we've been advocating that all serious cases of violence against doctors should be expedited in fast-track courts. These cases should be linked to BNS, and investigating authorities need to be aware of this. Thorough investigation and trial can deter those who target doctors," he said. Dr Arunima Goswami highlighted awareness as a critical issue. "In some areas, doctors work under pressure because many are unaware that if they are assaulted, the perpetrators can be arrested. Many people are also unaware of these provisions, leading to assaults on doctors and subsequent legal troubles," she said. Recent notable incidents include the assault on Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati at Udali Covid Care Centre in Hojai district, which led to over 20 arrests. Previously, in 2019, Dr Deben Dutta tragically succumbed to injuries after being attacked with sharp weapons at Teok Tea Estate hospital in Jorhat district, an incident that sparked nationwide outrage.

Gaurav takes charge as Assam Cong chief ahead of assembly polls

1 2 Guwahati: Deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, on Tuesday took charge as the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), as the grand old party is eyeing a resurgence to take on BJP and its allies in next year's assembly polls. He blew the bugle with the slogan "eibar juj hobo," meaning there will be a battle this time. After seeking blessings at the revered Batadrava Than in Nagaon on Monday, Gaurav headed towards Guwahati to assume charge as state PCC chief. On Tuesday morning, he offered prayers at Kamakhya Temple with some of the senior party leaders before embarking on his new political journey with new challenges. A three-time Lok Sabha MP, Gaurav is the son of former CM Tarun Gogoi and a loyalist of the Gandhi family. "Congress is coming, and no one can resist. Eibar juj hobo (there will be a fight this time)," Gaurav told party workers at a meeting held at Manabendra Sarma Complex soon after he took charge of the post of Assam PCC chief Bhupen Kumar Borah. Earlier, Gaurav was accorded a grand welcome at Rajiv Bhawan in the city, where he assumed charge in the presence of scores of leaders of different ranks and party workers. He said time is limited for the Congress workers, with barely 10 months left for next year's assembly polls. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Encontre voos low-cost Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Borah advocated opposition unity all along despite facing opposition from certain quarters of the party. Borah expressed gratefulness to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, particularly for their constant support to him while heading Assam Congress. "If we don't put in efforts every day to campaign and strengthen our party, we cannot reach our goal in the 2026 assembly election," Gaurav said. He stated that Congress wants to keep harmony, unity, and nationalist sentiments alive in Assam, and the Grand Old Party does not need a certificate from BJP. The new president also said, "We cannot forget the Bharat Jodo Yatra started by Bhupen Borah from Dhubri to Sadiya. In Jorhat, we paid tribute to two great personalities — former chief ministers Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi. These two individuals held the Congress party together during difficult times. In the long journey of the Congress party, the seniors faced many challenges. We will have challenges among us. We must move forward despite these challenges." Borah was confident that Gaurav is a strong voice of the people and has all the capabilities to fulfil the expectations of all sections of society. Borah was state PCC chief for the last four years when Congress continued its struggle to revive even by facing difficult times. AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Debabrata Saikia, and state Mahila Congress Chief Mira Barthakur were among the prominent Congress leaders present on the occasion. Gaurav was named as the new state PCC chief by AICC last week. The announcement of his name as the chief of Assam Congress came at a time when Gaurav was facing continuous attacks from CM Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding his wife's alleged connection with Pakistan's ISI and his (Gaurav's) visit to Pakistan.
