Reyna agrees move to Italy

With one year left on his contract, Giovanni Reyna appears to be edging closer to leaving Borussia Dortmund. According to transfer journalist Nicolò Schira, the United States international has reached an agreement in principle with Serie A side Parma on a contract running until 2029. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing, with the parties likely to agree on a €6 million transfer fee plus €2 million in bonuses. Reyna, 22, has been with the Black and Yellows since January 2020. After spending most of last season as a substitute, he was limited to just 12 minutes of action at the Club World Cup in his home country.

Why Lucas Ribeiro shouldn't be naturalised for Bafana Bafana

He just needs a move to a big European league and he will definitely be in the Seleção conversation. Lucas Ribeiro #10 of Mamelodi Sundowns FC scores his team's first goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group F match against Borussia Dortmund at TQL Stadium on June 21 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Photo: Dylan Buell / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP Lucas Ribeiro's wonder goal against Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup which was later named Goal of the Tournament has reinforced what many already believe. The Brazilian attacker is operating on another level and should not be naturalised to play for South Africa. The Sundowns star collected the ball deep inside his own half, went past two Dortmund defenders, and coolly slotted it beyond Gregor Kobel. The world applauded, but South African fans were not surprised because they've seen it before. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Ribeiro wins Club World Cup goal of the tournament That goal mirrored his solo strike against Orlando Pirates in a Betway Premiership clash at Loftus Versfeld. It was the same surging run, the same composure, the same clinical finish. Only this time, the world was watching and the moment of genius will be talked about for years to come. Ribeiro has shown at the highest level that he has the quality to compete with the best. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The 26-year-old is good enough for the Brazilian national team. His overall display at the global showpiece in the United States proved as much. He just needs a move to a big European league and he will definitely be in the Seleção conversation. In the PSL, he simply looks a class above the rest. He glides past defenders as though they aren't there. At times, it genuinely feels like he's playing with children, that's how good he is. In fact, there's nothing for him to prove in the PSL anymore and the only natural progression would be to seek greener pastures. Of course, Bafana would benefit from a player of Ribeiro's calibre, but the country's proud footballing heritage and historical background dictates that home grown players should be prioritised to represent the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winners. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Cardoso reacts to being honoured in Portugal Brazil may be stacked with attacking talent like Vinícius Jr, Rodrygo, Neymar, Cunha and Raphinha, but Ribeiro is arguably a better all-round player than Manchester United outcast Antony. Ribeiro's story is far from over. A move to Europe could well be next, and with it, a chance to realise his dream of representing Brazil.

Atalanta friendly fixed for 16 August

The Juventus Men's First Team will face Atalanta in their final summer friendly on Saturday, 16 August, just eight days before the Serie A opener at home to Parma. Kick-off in Bergamo will be at 20:45 CEST. In Bergamo, the Bianconeri will do battle with the Nerazzurri for the 26th edition of the Achille and Cesare Bortolotti Trophy. The fixture continues a summer schedule that sees Juventus return to action on 2 August against Reggiana at Vinovo, followed by a clash with Borussia Dortmund in Germany on 10 August, and a family friendly against Juventus Next Gen at the Allianz Stadium on 13 August. This will not be Juventus' first appearance in the Bortolotti Trophy. The Bianconeri featured in the competition back in 1992, when the format was a three-team mini-tournament involving Atalanta and Borussia Dortmund - the same German opponents they will face again this summer.

Florian Wirtz Liverpool transfer sparks bitter row as Bayer Leverkusen chief hits out

Liverpool pipped Bayern Munich to the signing of Florian Wirtz last month for a British transfer record of £116.5m in a major coup, but Borussia Dortmund's chief believes the decision weakened the Bundesliga Bayer Leverkusen chief Fernando Carro has hit back at his Borussia Dortmund counterpart after criticising the club for selling Florian Wirtz to Liverpool instead of Bayern Munich. ‌ Wirtz eventually joined Liverpool in a British record £116.5million deal but the player looked destined to join Bundesliga rivals Bayern after his incredible recent seasons that inspired Leverkusen to their first ever league title in 2024. ‌ But the playmaker had a change of heart after speaking with Reds boss Arne Slot as he linked up with the Premier League champions. ‌ Leverkusen's decision to sell to a team in a different league was met with opposition by Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke, who said the situation was a "real shame" because it made the Bundesliga a weaker division. "It's a real shame, especially for the DFL, that a player like Florian Wirtz is leaving the Bundesliga,' Watzke told Kicker. "I wouldn't have had a problem at all if he had gone to FC Bayern. "That would have been better for the Bundesliga. It doesn't really matter for the national team. He'll play at the highest level in Liverpool, too. "He could have worked better with (Jamal) Musiala in Munich, but two such good footballers can find each other anyway." But Carro said he "didn't understand" how a top German club in Dortmund would want Bayern to get stronger by signing another top player from the Bundesliga - and said by selling to Liverpool it ensured the division remained more competitive. ‌ "Honestly, yes. I have a different opinion than Hans-Joachim Watzke,' Sarro said, speaking to Welt am Sonntag. "I don't understand how he, as the boss of Borussia Dortmund, could have been happy if Wirtz had gone to Munich. "That would have made Bayern even stronger. I want an exciting Bundesliga. I'm happy when more clubs – besides us – make life difficult for Bayern, because I believe that benefits the Bundesliga." It comes after the player's father - also called Hans-Joachim - revealed how Slot convinced Wirtz to join Liverpool after laying out his vision to the youngster and explaining how he would fit into his tactical set-up at Anfield. ‌ "Arne Slot presented his playing philosophy, the team tactics in possession and pressing, and how Florian can develop his strengths in these areas," he said. "This made a decisive impression on Florian. The training conditions in Liverpool were also totally impressive." Amid exit rumours, former Spurs and Dortmund defender Lee Young-pyo urges Son Heung-min to chase happiness

Former Borussia Dortmund defender Lee Young-pyo (left) believes that Spurs captain Son Heung-min (right) can still perform in the English Premier League. SINGAPORE – Former Tottenham and Dortmund left-back Lee Young-pyo has urged his compatriot Son Heung-min to follow his heart when deciding on his future, adding that the Spurs captain must be certain of regular playing time if he chooses to remain with the Europa League champions. The 33-year-old Son, who led them to Europa League glory last season – his first silverware in 10 years at the club – has less than 12 months left on his contract, with no indication that a new contract is imminent. With Spurs unlikely to let their club's marquee player leave for free, the uncertainty has led to exit rumours , with clubs in the Saudi Pro League reported to be keen. The 48-year-old Lee ,who made over 90 appearances for Spurs from 2005 to 2008, told The Straits Times in an interview: 'In my opinion the most important thing is the player's happiness. 'When it is the last chapter of a football career, a footballer needs to make sure that he is happy. And the most happiness is what you get from playing. If he wants to enjoy and be happy, then the most important thing is to know where he can get that playing time.' 'I think the most important thing is what Son feels in his heart. He is at an age where he would be planning for retirement. I hope that wherever he decides to play, he can end his career well.' New Spurs coach Thomas Frank – who replaced Ange Postecoglou in June – added to the uncertainty around Son's future during the former's official presentation on July 18. The Dane said that he is yet to decide whether Son will remain as captain, while also refusing to confirm if the player would stay beyond the end of the summer transfer window. Top stories Swipe. Lee believes that Son can still perform in the English Premier League and talked up his impact in England and Europe. He added that his compatriot has surpassed the legacy of former Manchester United midfielder and South Korea captain Park Ji-Sung, who is regarded by many as one of the greatest and most successful Asian players in history. After signing for the Red Devils in 2005, Park won four Premier League titles and became the first Asian player to play in a Champions League final, when the Red Devils lost to Barcelona on penalties in 2009. He left Old Trafford in 2012 before retiring from football two years later. 'Not many people ever thought that an Asian player can become the top scorer in the Premier League. He has helped to change the perception of Asian football and because of him more players have had chances to play in Europe,' said Lee of Son's golden-boot winning season in 2021–22, when he finished joint top scorer alongside Liverpool's Mohamed Salah with 23 goals. 'I believe he is one of the greatest inspirations and hopes for many Asian players. He has been a very good example. In our time, Park was the biggest, best Asian player and I believe now Son has that title.' Besides Spurs, Lee also had a spell at Dortmund from 2008 to 2009. His former side closed out the domestic season with an eight-match unbeaten run that included five straight wins to score the fourth and final Uefa Champions League place. Lee expects them to pick up where they left off in the new campaign under Niko Kovac, who was appointed in January after the sacking of former coach Nuri Sahin. Kovac has led the team to 15 victories in 25 matches and the Black and Yellow made a run to the quarter-finals of the recently concluded Club World Cup, where they were eliminated by Real Madrid. 'After the end of the last season, I think they can continue to carry forward the momentum. Overall, last season was not perfect but I think we can do better in the new one,' said Lee. While fans will need to wait till Aug 24 to catch Dortmund's Bundesliga opening fixture against FC St. Pauli, they can catch a host of former Dortmund players, including Lee, who will be in action during the July 25-27 Soccer7sSeries. The tournament will feature seven-a-side men's open, women's and over-35 masters categories at the Jalan Besar Stadium. Lee's team includes legends Roman Weidenfeller, Patrick Owomoyela, Kevin Grosskreutz, Dede, Mladen Petric, Jan Koller, Omer Toprak and Park Joo-ho. They are one of 10 teams in the Masters categories. In Group A are Leicester City Masters, Corinthians Masters, Persib Masters, Real Singapura FC, and Cosmo Masters while BVB are alongside the 'All Stars', Forest Reds (Nottingham Forest), Singapore FC Masters, and Singa Legends in Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals. Lee is looking forward to the tournament and vowed to be competitive. He said: 'After retiring from playing, there are times when I miss playing football. I am excited to be back on the pitch with the players after a long time. I have not played football too many times since retiring but last few weeks I have been training so...I am ready to play.'
