Corbin Bosch reaches pinnacle of international career with World Test Championship final
South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch is likely to be a menace for Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord's, if selected in the starting XI. Photo: Backopagepix Image: Backpagepix Proteas all-rounder Corbin Bosch had prayed that when his big break came in international cricket, he would be good enough, because he knew that once he had a taste of it, he wouldn't want it taken away. The cricketer had a chance to reflect on his meteoric rise last week from the first-class scene as he gears up for the Proteas' World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord's in London from June 11. 'Once you get a taste of international cricket you can never get enough, so it's something I prayed about – if I'm good enough for the opportunity, I want it. I don't want a taste of it and it goes away. So that's been a big part of my growing up,' Bosch said at Castle Lager's farewell of the Proteas in Johannesburg, WTC final: Australia vs South Africa Image: Independent Media Video Player is loading. The fast bowling all-rounder, who is blessed with searing pace, claimed his first wicket with his first delivery in the format, against Pakistan, in front of a packed SuperSport Park, his home ground. SA won the Boxing Day Test to cement their place in the final. It's been an emotional roller-coaster ride for the all-rounder, that also took him to this season's IPL, where he played for the Mumbai Indians. 'It's been a good journey – up, down, left, right – but I've always stayed true to myself. I've always believed that I belong,' he said. 'It's been a tough journey but it's testament to the fact that hard work does get rewarded. 'It's just staying persistent and to keep believing, and I think something I've done really well is I never got too disappointed, even when you don't make teams or you don't get selected. It was just an opportunity for me to work harder and I always said I just want that opportunity when I'm ready for the opportunity.' He now gets the opportunity to walk out onto the hallowed turf of Lord's, as the Proteas bid to hoist the WTC mace against the defending champions. 'I don't think words can describe how special an occasion this is going to be. I think all the boys have been wanting this since we won that Test match at SuperSport Park last year in December,' Bosch said. 'The boys really rallied. Obviously, a lot of the guys have been away in India, so it's been nice to slowly get the band back together. We're excited for what's going to be a really incredible two weeks. 'Lord's is the pinnacle of cricket. A lot of the greats of the game played at Lord's and have their name on the Honours Board at Lord's, so I think that that's definitely the pinnacle of cricket to play there and step on that hallowed ground. 'It's definitely something that I'm going to take in every single minute while I'm there.'

Raw sewage forces cancellation of Riviera on Vaal parkrun
VEREENIGING – A sewage spill has forced the cancellation of the popular Riviera on Vaal parkrun, as raw effluent continues to pollute parts of the course and flow into the nearby Vaal River. Organisers announced on social media that the event on May 17 would not go ahead due to 'sewage water flooding the course,' calling the situation unsafe and blaming 'inefficiency from the Emfuleni Municipality.' Run director Linda Bosch said the problem has persisted for more than a month and originates from a sewer leak linked to a property in Golf Road. Despite reports to the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Bosch claimed no action has been taken. 'This has really affected us. I feel like I want to run away,' she said. The worst-hit section of the route is near the old bird park, but raw sewage also reaches the golf course close to the start. Trenches have been dug to divert the sewage away from the course, but this has only worsened environmental concerns— channelling the effluent directly into the Vaal River. Municipal spokesperson Makhosonke Sangweni confirmed that the leak stemmed from flats on Golf Road, stating that the matter had not been officially reported through the municipality's channels. He added that unknown individuals had forcibly opened an internal manhole, causing the overflow. 'Now that the municipality is officially aware, the necessary steps will be taken,' Sangweni said. Meanwhile, Riviera on Vaal parkrun participants remain in limbo, and environmental concerns continue to mount as untreated sewage pollutes a key recreational and ecological area. Wickens proves he's ready for his new challenge
Robert Wickens went into his first race of the season in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Long Beach with a simple goal: 'To leave with our heads held high.' The Canadian undoubtedly did that over the course of his maiden event aboard a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R specially adapted to allow him to drive with hand controls. But there was also a feeling of what might have been for Wickens and team-mate Tommy Milner. Advertisement The positives included the 2nd generation electronic brake system developed by Bosch Motorsport proving 'flawless from start to finish' during the 100-minute race. It allowed him to show his pace competing at this level of motorsports for the first time since returning into professional racing after his life-changing accident in IndyCar back in 2018. Wickens ended up fastest in second free practice as he threaded his GT Daytona class DXDT Racing Chevy between the walls on the daunting 1.97-mile Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit. He then ended up just over half a second from pole position in qualifying despite a side-swipe from another car on his hot lap — he completed his lap with damaged suspension. 'It was all sunshine and rainbows going into qualifying,' says Wickens, a driver who has always felt an affinity with street circuits. 'We thought if we do everything right and play our cards right, we have a shot at pole on debut. Frankly, if you had told me that last week, I would have said you are dreaming. 'But we ended up eighth. The electronic hand control system from Bosch was doing everything I needed it to do. That's why it hurts that we didn't get to maximise my qualifying.' Advertisement Wickens regards the system developed by Bosch for the Corvette as a breakthrough that has allowed him to take the next step of his racing comeback with a programme in the five IMSA sprint races aboard the Corvette. It is, says Jordan Smart, motorsport application engineer at Bosch Motorsport, 'deeply integrated with the car'. The brakes on the Hyundai TCR car in which Wickens returned to competition in IMSA's Michelin Pilot Challenge support series were based on hydraulic braking. Now, the Bosch Electronic Brake System (EBS), explains Smart, allows the inputs Wickens makes on the controls on the steering wheel to create 'a little electrical signal that is converted into brake pressure' at the wheel. 'It's true brake-by-wire.' Wickens and Milner went into the Long Beach race on 12 April with ambitions to improve on eighth place on the grid, though with one proviso. Driver changes are an integral part of the IMSA series and DXDT knew that come the race it would lose time to its rivals in the pits. Advertisement 'It just takes a little more time currently with the position we are in with Robert having to be lifted out of the car,' says Bryan Sellers, DXDT's programme manager on the IMSA team. 'We have a lot of moving pieces with getting Robert out, with getting the next driver in.' That loss of time resulted in Milner falling to P10 from the seventh position out of which Wickens ducked into the pits. The longtime factory Corvette driver made it as high as fifth, but as he passed a BMW for that position he receives a tap on the rear that dislodges the bodywork. Race control demands Milner pits to have the errant bodywork properly secured, the delay resulting in a 15th- place finish in class for the DXDT Chevy. 'Safety is the top priority and after having some contact our rear bumper was a little bit loose, and they gave us a black flag to pit for repairs,' explains Wickens. 'Our race was more or less over at that point, so we finished whatever it was. I don't think it tells the whole story.' Advertisement 'That's racing,' says Smart. 'The system we have developed gave Robert the potential and the pace was there. That was the key takeaway for us: we provided him the tool to get to that level.'
