‘Smoke alarms save lives': occupants evacuate after Muskoka house fire

The aftermath of a fire at a home in Bracebridge, Ont., on Sun., July 20, 2025. Fire crews in Muskoka responded to a fire that caused 'significant' damage to a home in the Bracebridge area Sunday morning. According to Kevin Plested, Bracebridge's fire chief, Stations 1 and 2 were dispatched to reports of a house on fire at around 9:30 a.m. near Wellington Street and Santa's Village Road. Six apparatuses and approximately 30 firefighters were involved in the response. Plested told CTV News that the two occupants heard their smoke alarms activate and evacuated safely. One of them reportedly suffered a minor ankle injury. 'Residents are reminded that working smoke alarms save lives,' said Plested, in an email to CTV News. 'In this case, the owner of the property was diligent in ensuring they had working smoke alarms installed on all levels of the home.' Plested adds that the home suffered significant damage, but it is believed to be insured. The fire is not believed to be suspicious. An investigator remained on site after the incident.

An OPP uniform is seen in this undated photo (CTV file photo). Ontario Provincial Police say a Brampton man has been charged with impaired driving after a single-vehicle collision in Bracebridge Ont. Official say officers with the Bracebridge OPP detachment were called to Carlsmount Road at around 4:20 p.m. on Monday after a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Police say the occupants fled the scene but were later located. As a result, 40-year-old Shekhar Phogat, of Brampton, was arrested and charged with impaired operation and failure/refusal to 'comply with demand (breath).' None of the charges have been tested in court but police note he is scheduled to appear in Bracebridge on Aug. 19. 'Impaired driving continues to be a significant factor affecting the safety of Muskoka roads,' police wrote. 'If you suspect someone is driving a vehicle of any kind while impaired, please call 9-1-1.'

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid multiple charges against a 23-year-old man after a string of videos showcasing reckless driving surfaced on social media. OPP officers with Dufferin, Bracebridge and Orillia detachments were alerted to the videos by a concerned citizen on Tuesday night. Police say the videos depicted excessive speeding, improper tires on the vehicle, and raised concerns about potential impairment. Officers hit the roads patrolling local highways for the suspect vehicle, which they say was spotted traveling north on Highway 11 through Severn Township at speeds topping 150 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted on Southwood Road in the Gravenhurst area, and the driver was taken into custody. The accused, a Gravenhurst man, faces a slew of charges, including impaired driving, dangerous operation, stunt driving, and driving with an open container of liquor, among others related to modifications to the vehicle. He is has since been handed a 90-day licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment, along with a day in court.

Huge fire in Bracebridge destroys home and outbuildings

With a plume of smoke seen for miles, a fire in the area of Matthiasville Road brought about 30 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Six fire trucks were called to the Tuesday evening fire from Bracebridge Fire Department Stations 1 and 2, with another four firefighters monitoring the scene Wednesday morning. Plested said the home and at least two structures are a complete loss and it's not clear if the homeowner has insurance. The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office estimates the damage to be more than $1,000,000.

OPP investigate vandalism at park in Bracebridge

Provincial police are seeking the public's help with their investigation into an act of vandalism at Annie Williams Park in Bracebridge. Police believe a vehicle was driven over several teepee poles, causing significant damage, and noted one pole was missing from the park. The incident is believed to have happened sometime between Sunday evening and Tuesday morning following the second annual 'See Muskoka Through Our Eyes' powwow, which was held at the park over the weekend. The OPP is asking anyone with information or video surveillance from the area of Santa's Village Road and Annie Williams Park to contact it at 1-888-310-1122. Authorities are working to identify those responsible and are relying on tips from the public to help solve the case.
