'Mare of Easttown' Fans: The Show's Creator Is Back With Brand New Crime Drama 'Task'
Following the acclaimed Mare of Easttown, creator Brad Ingelsby is back with Task, a new HBO Max — and yes, this series is set Pennsylvania too. Inspired by his uncle, a former priest, and insights from the FBI, Task stars Mark Ruffalo as an ex-priest turned FBI agent investigating drug-house robberies in Philly's suburbs. The show also follows a garbage man with a double life. With Ingelsby's signature attention to detail and a compelling premise, Task is set to premiere on HBO Max later this year. Here's what you need to know! Mare of Easttown came out with a bang in 2021. The HBO series, which followed a detective investigating a small-town Pennsylvania murder, was nominated for 16 Emmys and took home four awards. Aside from Kate Winslet's acclaimed portrayal of Mare Sheehan, the show, created and written by Brad Ingelsby, was also revered for its detail-oriented portrayal of the titular town. This is precisely what inspired Brad Ingelsby to make his latest HBO series, Task, and set it in his home state again. "It's where I live now, it's where I grew up, it's where I was raised, and it's where a lot of the important relationships in my life were formed. It's also a place that I feel like I can speak about and write about with some conviction and authority," he detailed. The show centers on a former priest-turned-FBI agent named Tom Brandis, played by Mark Ruffalo, who leads a specialized task force investigating a wave of drug-house robberies in the working-class suburbs outside of Philadelphia. As the case unfolds, the story also pans to Robbie Prendergrast, a local garbage man leading a double life as he conducts heists on drug houses. Robbie's role is taken on by Tom Pelphrey. According to Brad, the whole premise of Task was actually inspired by his real-life uncle, who used to be a priest. And while speaking with his uncle about the priesthood, he came to learn that sometimes, clergymen are asked to assist the FBI. This led him to create Tom Brandis' character, a man who lived through events that shook his faith. As for where Robbie Prendergrast's storyline originated, Brad got the idea while speaking with a source at the FBI. Both garbagemen and mail carriers are "people that know a lot about your life, but you kind of ignore them. They're invisible. But they get your bills and your mail, and they go through your trash," he explained. The Task cast is stacked, including names like: Mark Ruffalo Tom Pelphrey Emilia Jones Fabien Frankel Raúl Castillo Thuso Mbedu Jamie McShane Alison Oliver Sam Keeley. The production is reportedly more complex than Mare of Easttown, too, but what Brad cares most about is doing Pennsylvania justice by getting the details right. That's why he consulted with various technical advisers, such as the Easttown Township chief of police, an FBI agent who really was a priest in the past, and even someone who'd previously been in a biker gang. "It gives the audience a sense of comfort that the people who have told this story know these people, and they care about them enough to make them really layered and honest characters. And that, to me, is important. Because I have to live here, so I'd better get it right," Brad said. Yes! HBO Max just dropped yesterday — and it's safe to say this show is gonna be pretty intense after watching! Task is supposed to premiere on HBO Max later this year, but an exact release date hasn't been confirmed yet. In the meantime, you can stream Season 1 of Mare of Easttown on Max now. You can stream Task on HBO Max once it premieres. Looking for more & news? Follow us on so you never miss a thing!

HBO Max just dropped a teaser trailer for new Mark Ruffalo crime thriller, ‘Task' — and it looks like a must-watch
HBO Max has just dropped a teaser for 'Task,' a new crime show from Brad Ingelsby, the creator of 'Mare of Easttown.' Frankly, that in of itself should be enough to put 'Task' on your radar. 'Mare of Easttown' was rightly branded as appointment viewing back in 2021, and the HBO streaming service is poised to bring us back to Pennsylvania. This time, it's not a small-town murder investigation, nor is Kate Winslet in the frame; "Task" instead sees MCU star Mark Ruffalo helming an FBI task force and hunting down a violent gang. With Guns N' Roses' 'Patience' setting a somber tone, the 'Task' teaser trailer tees up an intriguing, murky tale. Ruffalo's FBI agent is to helm a new task force (comprised, as he notes, primarily of inexperienced officers) to find and thwart a crew of violent, masked home invaders who've already carried out hits on nine homes. There are snatches of family life, awkward conversations, and a quick taste of some of the action that's coming our way — on-foot chases, shootouts, and a car tumbling down a hill — too. And with that background sketched, we build up to Ruffalo's team sweeping a building, with him on one side of a door… and armed family man/home invasion crew leader (Tom Pelphrey) on the other. Is this teaser setting up a violent end for one of our leads? We'll have to wait and see. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Looking forward to 'Task'? You won't have to wait too much longer to check it out; HBO Max has confirmed that Brad Ingelsby's crime series will debut on HBO and HBO Max in September (an exact release date has not been confirmed at the time of writing), and new episodes will air on a weekly basis. HBO has shared a logline for the series, but it doesn't give much more info away about the show. It reads: 'Set in the working class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man (Tom Pelphrey).' In addition to Ruffalo and Pelphrey, we know 'Task' also stars Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton. Mireille Enos also has a recurring role in the series. Creator and writer Brad Ingelsby will also serve as 'Task' showrunner, and the series has been directed by Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Need something new to watch while you wait for 'Task' to air? Be sure to check out our round-up of the best shows on HBO Max for tons more streaming recommendations. "Mare of Easttown" fans might also want to keep an eye out for Apple TV Plus' upcoming family thriller 'Echo Valley." The new movie was penned by Brad Ingelsby and stars Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney, and Domhnall Gleeson.

Task: HBO might have the show of the year from Mare of Easttown creator
HBO unveiled the first teaser trailer for Task, an upcoming crime drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby. Even if the episodes are only half as good as this teaser, HBO might have the show of the year. Set in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Task stars Mark Ruffalo as an FBI agent charged with investigating a series of violent robberies in the area. Ruffalo's agent spearheads an inexperienced task force to find the crew responsible. The teaser trailer reveals that Tom Pelphrey plays the criminal mastermind, an unsuspecting family man who wears a skull mask when committing the robberies. Judging by the rest of the footage, the lawman and the outlaw are on a collision course that will result in bloodshed. Task's cast includes Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton. Brad Ingelsby is the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Task. Executive producers Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield will direct the episodes. Additional executive producers include Ruffalo, Mark Roybal, Paul Lee, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches are co-executive producers. Task is Ingelsby's first TV show since 2021's Mare of Easttown, a sensational crime drama starring Kate Winslet, Julianne Nicholson, Evan Peters, and Jean Smart. Mare of Easttown received 16 Emmy nominations, winning four, including Outstanding Lead Actress (Winslet), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Nicholson), and Outstanding Supporting Actor (Peters). If Task is well received by critics, expect it to be a major contender at the 2026 Emmys. Task premieres this September on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. The series consists of seven episodes that will debut weekly.

‘Dope Thief' is a very Philly tale of screwups and cat-and-mouse crime
It's always scuzzy in Philadelphia, at least in several new and upcoming crime dramas. There's the Amanda Seyfried vehicle 'Long Bright River' on Peacock, and Brad Ingelsby's upcoming 'Task,' a spiritual cousin to his 2021 critical smash 'Mare of Easttown,' on Max. Then there's the most evocatively titled of the bunch, 'Dope Thief,' which premieres Friday on Apple TV Plus. There must be something in the water. Better yet: in the wooder.
