We weren't happy – Thomas Tuchel won't pull punches when criticising England

After Gareth Southgate called time on his eight-year reign having lost a second European Championship final, the Football Association turned to German coach Tuchel in a bid to take them that last step. Tuchel's contract takes him through to the end of next summer's World Cup, where England will be among the favourites but have plenty of work to do judging by Saturday's forgettable 1-0 win against minnows Andorra. England's Reece James (left) and Trent Alexander-Arnold look frustrated during the Andorra clash (Bradley Collyer/PA) Boos from unimpressed fans greeted the half-time and final whistles in Barcelona, where the frustrated head coach spoke frankly about his unhappiness at the side's lack of 'seriousness and urgency' as they 'played with fire' towards the end. Asked if it was a risk being so publicly critical of the team, Tuchel responded: 'What risk? You were in the stadium. What should I tell you? That we played a good match and are happy. 'The risk is only that you exaggerate it and make something of it that was not there. Everything I said I said already to the team. There is no harm done. 'We were not happy and no single player will be happy with what we showed today. Why would the coach be? And why would we be shy of saying so? 'If we want to get better, we first need to address that we were not happy with the end of both halves.' Put to Tuchel that some players can be thin-skinned, the England boss said: 'I didn't name a single name. 'We do this as a team. It's always a 'we' and I didn't like how the way we ended the match and the way we ended the first half. I didn't like the attitude or the energy level and how that dropped. 'I liked the beginning of the team. It always includes me. Everything I say I tell the players.' Tuchel feels he has a 'top group' full of players whose quality and character he loves – a side that will attempt to lift the mood by heading into the summer on the back of a promising performance in Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. The visitors are ranked 19th in the world, 154 places above Andorra, and will be the toughest test since the 51-year-old took charge, but the honeymoon period could end if they play badly at the City Ground. 'I always feel pressure as I am not happy with myself,' Tuchel said when that was put to him. 'The biggest pressure comes from myself. We have three wins and three clean sheets and we have a friendly match on Tuesday. I have felt more pressure than that.' Tuchel is expecting a 'good test' against Senegal and will look to balance rotation with the need to extract everything from their limited time together, saying: 'We worship every training and we worship every match.' England's Ivan Toney has his eyes on a starting berth (Bradley Collyer/PA) Ivan Toney, called up for the first time since joining Saudi side Al-Ahli, is among those pushing to start after Ollie Watkins withdrew through injury and Harry Kane completed Saturday's win against Andorra. 'We have opportunities and we will see some changes but I am not going to give you names now because I don't know the line up,' Tuchel added. 'It's not the time now to talk about Ivan Toney because now we just played a game and we must analyse the game.'

Thomas Tuchel unhappy with lack of quality in England win against Andorra

'I am not happy with the performance, of course,' German coach Tuchel said on ITV1. 'We started quite well in the first 20-25 minutes, which was the only part where I had the feeling it was only a matter of time, we created a lot of half-chances and from set-pieces, that we will score and keep on going. 'But we lost completely the momentum and couldn't get it back through the whole of the first half. 'We got a little bit of it back in the first 15 minutes of the second half and then ended up in a period which was by far not good enough – lack of urgency, lack of quality and lack of energy.' England play a friendly against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday night and Tuchel is expecting a much-improved display. Harry Kane's goal early in the second half was all England had to show against the minnows (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'We can just admit it that it's not what we expect from us and we need to do better,' the England boss added. 'We need a bit of time to look at it in detail and address it clearly and directly to be better on Tuesday.' Tuchel was also not happy with how England finished the match. 'We have to play until the 93rd minute. I didn't like the lack of urgency in the end,' he said. 'It did not match the occasion at all, it is still a qualifier away from home, I didn't like it at all. England manager Thomas Tuchel (right) felt his players should have shown more quality (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'The players know all I said to you, because I said it in the dressing room, but it is also necessary to have a look in detail, watch the match again, and then we will let them know tomorrow what we want from them.' England captain Kane accepted it 'wasn't the greatest performance'. The Bayern Munich forward added: 'I don't think many people will remember this one but we can learn from it. 'It is very hot here, a dry pitch, probably similar conditions to maybe next year at the World Cup, so we will go away and analyse. 'We had good spells in the game but we couldn't have attack after attack. We take the three points and we move on.' "Some of the players looked bored" 🥱 Roy Keane and Karen Carney reflect on an underwhelming England victory against Andorra #ITVFootball | #ThreeLions — ITV Football (@itvfootball) June 7, 2025 England's listless display did not sit well with former Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane, who offered a scathing post-match analysis. 'We try and make excuses for England with the end of the season and it's been tough on the players,' the former Manchester United midfielder said on ITV1. 'I thought the first half was okay but when they scored the goal it felt it was job done. 'I was really disappointed with England's attitude after the goal went in. The manager can't be happy with that effort in the last half an hour. 'I felt like some of the players looked like they got bored in the last half an hour and I don't like to see that.'

Thursday's briefing: Liam Delap joins Chelsea as City look at Tijjani Reijnders

Chelsea sign Delap Chelsea have completed the signing of Liam Delap (Bradley Collyer/PA) Chelsea signed striker Delap on a deal until 2031 after triggering his £30million release clause. An agreement was reached between the clubs last week for the England Under-21 international, who became the Blues' first summer signing and is eligible for the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States. The 22-year-old said on the club's official website: 'It's going to be an incredible place for me to develop and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.' Reijnders to join City Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is set to join Manchester City (Bradley Collyer/PA) City have agreed a 55million euros (approximately £46million) fee with AC Milan for 26-year-old Dutch midfielder Reijnders, who has agreed a five-year contract to move to the Premier League. The formalities of the deal are still to be completed but it appears City have landed their first major summer signing. United trying for Mbeumo Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo is a target for Manchester United (John Walton/PA) Manchester United are ready to step up interest in Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, the PA news agency understands. The Red Devils have wasted little time starting Ruben Amorim's rebuild after the club's worst top-flight season in 51 years was compounded by their costly Europa League final loss to Tottenham. Wolves forward Matheus Cunha's £62.5million move to Old Trafford is to be completed after international duty, with him joining on a five-year deal with an option for another season. PA understands Cameroon international Mbeumo, 25, has expressed a desire to move to Old Trafford over other options and there has been informal contact between clubs. Bright walks away from England Millie Bright has withdrawn from England's squad (Joe Giddens/PA) Chelsea defender Bright has withdrawn from selection for this summer's European Championship, saying she is 'not able to give 100 per cent mentally or physically' to England's title defence. The 31-year-old captained the Lionesses to their first World Cup final in 2023 but has pulled out of Sarina Wiegman's squad for their final Nations League encounters for an 'extended period of recovery'. The Blues captain posted on Instagram: 'This is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. My pride and ego tells me to go, but I think the team and the fans deserve more. Right now I am not able to give 100 per cent mentally or physically.' She is the third England player to withdraw from the squad in the last 10 days, following the retirements of Mary Earps and Fran Kirby. What's on today? Spain and France face each other in the second Nations League semi-final to decide who will face Portugal in Sunday's final.

Ange Postecoglou hopes for chance to make Tottenham ‘bigger than ever'

The 59-year-old is yet to receive clarity on whether he will continue at Spurs after he flipped the script and clinched Europa League success in Bilbao with a first trophy in 17 years. Postecoglou had been expected to leave after a poor Premier League campaign – which could end with Tottenham in 17th if they lose to Brighton on Sunday – but after being serenaded by thousands of supporters at Friday's open-top bus parade, the narrative around the Australian has shifted. 'Come Monday, I won't have a care in the world, but I assume I'll have an indication at some point. Only because you know there's some serious planning to do more than anything else, but I won't have any problem switching off,' Postecoglou said. 'I was overwhelmed by the sea of people and every demographic you can think of. There were grown men crying, women, girls and boys just so ecstatic. 'When you see the sheer magnitude of the numbers, you realise it is a massive club. 'I had a sense of that before I joined but I guess even for the club itself, it reaffirms that missing piece of success and what it can do to galvanise a supporter base and really show the size of the club. 'It's fair to say it is a massive club and the opportunity now is to make it bigger than ever.' Postecoglou revealed after victory over Manchester United in Bilbao that he switched his priority to Europa League success in January. Several league defeats have followed but lessons have been learned and experienced players will be targeted this summer if Postecoglou is kept on. 'Looking back at our pre-season last year, I don't think it was ideal and there were certain things we needed to do differently,' he explained. 'The other lesson learned… you need to now bring in some experience for this group in terms of our recruiting. 'I have still felt there has been growth this year and we'll be much better placed at the beginning of next year to tackle what is ahead than we were at the start of this one.' Injuries have been one of Postecoglou's biggest hurdles. He added: 'There were times this year when I thought how many more challenges? Within that, I never felt like 'this is just too much' – it's not how I'm built. 'When in the lowest of times, I still had this thing inside of me that we were going to do something special this year. I just really believed it. Postecoglou (centre) had been expected to leave after a poor Premier League campaign (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'You can ask the guys in there that every time we got hit with a sort of road block, the one thing I kept saying to them, 'it's just going to make the story better' and it has.' Postecoglou hopes this week's celebration give the squad a taste for success and tipped Wednesday's match-winner Brennan Johnson to become a 'mentality monster' after a tough campaign, with his social media account deactivated in September following online abuse. 'Fair to say, he's one of the ones who has enjoyed himself, but rightly so. And I'm hoping him doing that on such a big stage, he comes back next year as a mentality monster,' Postecoglou added.
