Sekhukhune United in advanced talks with veteran PSL striker

Sekhukhune United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign veteran PSL striker Bradley Grobler from SuperSport United. Grobler's contract with Matsatsantsa expires on 30 June, and while he waited for them, they delayed offering him a new deal. And he subsequently looked elsewhere with Sekhukhune United showing huge interest in his services. Sekhukhune United have relied on Chibuike Ohizu and Andy Boyeli for goals, but with Grobler on board, they could be stronger upfront. The 37-year-old marksman is one of the most prolific strikers in the history of the PSL with 115 goals across all competitions. Grobler will reunite with coach Eric Tinkler whom he worked with at SupersSport United eight years ago. 'It's understood the finer details are still being ironed out, however, Sekhukhune have tabled an offer that Grobler has already accepted in principle, subject to all paperwork being signed and approved.' PSL rescheduling sparks rulebook row after three-month delay

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix On Monday, the PSL rescheduled the abandoned Betway Premiership match between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows — a staggering three months after its initial postponement. This curious twist of fate has stirred controversy and left many questioning the league's commitment to their own rules, after the PSL appeared to throw their NSL Handbook out of the window with this call. The handbook is the definitive guide to match protocols and regulations, dictating a more timely resolution to such interruptions as loadshedding. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The original encounter took place in late February. It was interrupted at half-time, with both teams locked in a stalemate at 1–1, when the stadium lights unexpectedly went out, plunging the game into darkness. Under Rule 14.16 of the NSL Handbook, it is stipulated that matches interrupted by loadshedding or other causes of inadequate lighting must be resumed within 48 hours at an agreed-upon time and venue. However, the fixture's resumption has been delayed for three months, raising concerns over fairness in the league's operations. The match, now scheduled for 12pm on Thursday, could determine SuperSport's fate in the PSL relegation/promotion play-offs — a scenario that places significant weight on the outcome and raises questions about compliance with NSL procedures. Mathematically, Golden Arrows could still reach the coveted Top 8 if they win the match with a mammoth margin of six goals. The handbook explicitly underscores the necessity of a backup generator, highlighting the importance of maintaining functionality during unforeseen power failures. SuperSport United, as the host club, may argue that they do not own the stadium. However, in hiring the venue, they are responsible for ensuring that it meets all PSL match-day requirements — including the provision of backup power. To date, no action has been taken against SuperSport. The PSL must ensure that clubs hiring stadiums are never again left vulnerable to the uncertainties of power shortages. This latest development sets a concerning precedent for match resumptions beyond the previously established 48-hour window — sparking speculation over whether such timeframes remain enforceable, despite their inclusion in the handbook.

SuperSport United just don't have luck at the moment, bemoans Arendse after Orlando Pirates loss

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix ANDRE Arendse is a glass-half-full kind of guy. The SuperSport United stand-in coach chose to look on the bright side of his team's 1-0 defeat by Orlando Pirates in their Premiership clash at Polokwane's Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night. The loss left Matsatsantsa a Pitori needing to beat Richards Bay FC in their final match of the season at the same venue on Saturday (3pm start) if they are to avoid getting into the play-offs to retain their elite league status. It was SuperSport's successive defeat after they lost to Stellenbosch FC, and they are tied on 26 points with 15th-placed Cape Town City. Arendse believes they will survive. 'We've got it in the locker-room. We believe we can score goals and keep opposition strikers away, and we are going to keep that for the next game,' he said. 'We are going to have to do it the hard way... there's no doubt about that. We've got the next one (match) coming, and we will prepare for that.' SuperSport were unfortunate not to get at least a point from a match that Pirates won via a second-half goal from Mohau Nkota, who did well to get inside of Aphiwe Baliti to shoot with his favourite left foot after receiving the ball from Karim Kimvuidi on his right. Late in the match, Nyiko Mobbie's powerful header from a Pogisho Sanoka delivery bounced off the upright, with Pirates' debutant goalkeeper Siyabonga Dladla, who was celebrating his 24th birthday, well beaten. 'There's such a thing as luck in the game. There really is,' Arendse said post-match. 'And we don't have it at the moment. On another night, that header hits the post and goes into the net. This time, it hits the post and comes back. 'Those are the kind of margins I am talking about in times of luck's perspective. We just don't have that at the moment.' What they do have though is a fighting spirit and determination he lauded his team for. 'Of course I am not happy that we lost, but I am not disappointed in the performance. Once again, they gave their all out there,' Arendse said. 'I thought we pushed them so far into the game. Defensively, we looked very, very solid, and just one lapse in concentration and we are giving teams goals again, like in the past game (against Stellies). 'We've got to fix that and do it quickly because we are running out of games. We don't have time.' His outlook for the team, nevertheless, remained a positive one. 'We are going to do this (avoid going into the play-offs). 'There is no doubt in my mind that this group of players is going to see this team over the line, and I look forward to seeing that.'
