LOI transfers: Jamie Stott joins Derry City with Ciaron Harkin moving to Sligo Rovers

Derry City have brought in defender Jamie Stott from crisis club Morecambe. The 27-year old has joined the Brandywell club on an 18-month deal, offering a new option as a left-sided centre-back for manager Tiernan Lynch. Stott was voted Players' Player of the Season at Morecambe last year as the Shrimpers were relegated from the Football League. They are currently battling for their very survival as a entity due to financial and ownership issues, opening the door for Derry to sign Stott. He counts Oldham Athletic, Stockport and Halifax Town among his previous sides. City boss Lynch is pleased with his latest addition: "Jamie comes here with plenty of experience in the EFL and National League and will strengthen our defensive options ahead of a very busy few months. "He's a big, strong lad and seems happy with the ball at his feet. "He just arrived this morning and took part in a full training session today and we're really looking forward to working with him." Dipo Akinyemi, Adam Frizzell and Brandon Fleming have already moved to Derry this window, as well as loan signing Alex Bannon. Midfielder Ciaron Harkin is the latest player to join Sligo Rovers, departing the Brandywell. Harkin signs with Rovers until the end of the 2025 season, with the club retaining an option on the player for 2026. The 29-year-old is the sixth signing of the summer transfer window, with John Russell already adding Patrick McClean, Seb Quirk, Ryan O'Kane, James McManus and Sean Stewart this month. The Derry native began his senior career with the Candystripes and has had his career blighted by injuries in recent years. He was a regular for City from 2019-2021 but later suffered devastating cruciate ligament ruptures which kept him sidelined for almost two years. Harkin made a return to action last year and went out on loan to Coleraine at the end of the year to get game time under his belt. Lynch gave Harkin six appearances this campaign, but he struggled to break into the side, leading to Bit O' Red boss John Russell making a move. Russell said: "It's a brilliant signing of a player I've always admired. He's a midfielder who can do a bit of everything. He's tenacious, good on the ball, legs, energy, he's coming to us at the stage of his career for a fresh challenge. "He's a Derry boy, he's had his injuries in the past but he's over those now. He's hungry to play, sitting on the bench is not easy for any player but especially at his age, he's in the prime of his career, at 29."

Horrifying moment football hooligans blast their rivals with fireworks and attack each other with sticks

Violent clashes broke out during a football match in Ireland after a group of yobs began blasting rival fans with fireworks and attacking them with sticks. The streets of Derry descended into chaos on Friday when two large groups of supporters began attacking each other outside the Brandywell stadium as Derry City faced off against Dublin side Bohemians. A teenage boy and a man, aged in his 20s, sustained injuries as a result of the incident, which took place on the Lecky Road and Lone Moor Road areas, and were taken to hospital for treatment. Horrifying footage showed dozens of masked men wielding sticks, bats and iron bars facing off in front of shocked locals and fellow football fans. In one terrifying video, a gang of yobs can be seen blasting fireworks directly towards a rival group on the other side of a metal fence in scenes that resembled those out of a video game. Others appeared to be holding golf clubs and launching projectiles towards the men as they fled to safety to escape the burning embers and thick clouds of smoke. As the violence ensued, one young girl could be heard getting increasingly distressed as she cries out to her father: 'Daddy, please, daddy!' 'You're alright, you're alright,' he says, desperately trying to reassure her, before telling two men on the opposite side of the fence to 'calm down' as they look for objects to throw back in retaliation. Huge red and green sparks can be seen flying into the air as the yobs fired the projectiles towards their rivals on the other side of the fence A second video shows several young men facing off in a residential area, with some trading punches while others launched sticks and various other projectiles towards their rivals. In a third clip, dozens of yobs can be seen charging towards a smaller group of lads in front of horrified locals - as several sirens can be heard wailing in the background. Police said the disorder, which they believe was pre-arranged, took place in the Lecky Road and Lone Moor Road areas shortly after 7pm. Further clashes then occurred in the vicinity of the Brandywell stadium during and after the football match, which kicked off 7:45pm. Officers in attendance said they worked along with stadium staff to bring the disorder under control. No arrests have been made at this time. Superintendent William Calderwood said: 'We believe that the disorder we witnessed on Friday evening was pre-arranged and we will be reviewing all available footage to identify those involved. 'I would ask anyone with information or footage which could assist us with our inquiries to contact officers at Strand Road on 101.' A report can be submitted online using the non-emergency reporting form via or people can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. A local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) who was at the game said he was left frightened by what he had witnessed. 'In terms of scale and the level of violence and danger to those in the vicinity, we haven't seen anything like this and I hope we never do again,' SDLP MLA Mark Durkan told the Belfast Telegraph. 'It was genuinely scary. I don't scare easily but we did turn on our heels and go in the opposite direction. 'People were genuinely frightened and that shouldn't be the case, especially when they go to a football match.' The Irish Premier league match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was also briefly suspended after a flare was thrown onto the pitch from outside the ground.

League of Ireland talking points: Derry and Bohs draw marred by ugly scenes

Derry and Bohs draw overshadowed by ugly scenes Supporters of Derry City and Bohemians clashed outside the Brandywell while an unspectacular tie played out between the league's second- and third-place sides. Violence and damage to property was reported just outside the ground, and the game was held up for several minutes in the first half when a flare landed on the pitch. Football-wise, Dipo Akinyemi scored his first Derry goal deep into first half injury time, heading home clinically from a lovely Brandon Fleming cross. Akinyemi was the home side's brightest spark for much of the night, working well alongside Liam Boyce in attack. Derry edged the opening period, but Bohs responded well in the second half. With James Clarke picking up a nice gap in the box, Ross Tierney pre-empted a breaking ball, arriving emphatically on the half-volley and passing the ball into the top corner. Neither side threw much caution to the wind from then on, with Robbie Benson coming closest to a winner 10 minutes from time. READ MORE Shamrock Rovers will be delighted with the outcome, as their lead at the top now stands at seven points. Both teams' ultras are known for their anti-fascist identity. — Antifa_Ultras (@ultras_antifaa) Sligo Rovers win thriller to ignite survival bid Trailing by two with half an hour to go, Sligo Rovers left Turner's Cross with all three points and an 11-point lead over Cork City, who will require something miraculous now to avoid finishing at the foot of the League of Ireland premier division. This was a game full of emotion. Rovers have shown lots of heart in recent weeks, digging out unlikely results to hoist themselves back into the mix for eighth place. That resilience was absent in the first half as City, offering the sort of toothy desperation you need at the bottom of the table, took a deserved lead into half-time. Evan McLaughlin scored the decisive goal in the Leesiders' last league win, all the way back in April against Waterford. He opted against returning a one-two to Kitt Nelson early on, taking ownership inside the penalty area instead and deceiving Sam Sargeant with a clever, reversed finish at the near post. Sligo were always likely to improve in the second period, but just as they looked to be taking control, City doubled their lead. Persistence and composure are attributes that have long clung to Seanie Maguire, and they were central to his goal on 55 minutes. Many would have lashed at the rebound that fell to him near the penalty spot, but Maguire swivelled and took an extra touch before burying it in the corner. If Sligo Rovers survive this season, their ambition in the transfer market will be a key factor. Two of the Bit O'Red's second-half goals came from new recruits – Patrick McClean's bullet header was his second in three games since rejoining the club, and Ryan O'Kane had the quality and quickness of feet to seal a remarkable winner at the death. The catalyst for it all, unsurprisingly, was Owen Elding. His goal on the hour mark, having been played through wonderfully by Jad Hakiki, was a shining example of the teenager's pace, power and nose for opportunity. Though his first effort was well saved, no one was beating Elding in a foot race to the rebound. Moments before O'Kane's winner, Cork City substitute Alex Nolan was inches away from a goal of the season contender. Feinting inside from the right, Nolan threatened to strike three or four times before eventually unleashing and rattling the underside of the crossbar. Less than a minute later, O'Kane found the net – a microcosm for the vicissitudes of Cork City's season, and perhaps the most damning moment yet in their fight to survive. Classy Waterford sweep Galway United aside Just above the more pertinent relegation battle, Galway United and Waterford hoping to move one from nervous, over-the-shoulder glances at a resurgent Sligo Rovers. Only a point separated the sides coming into the game at Eamonn Deacy Park, but Galway have been accumulating causes for concern. The Tribesmen are now on a run of one draw and four defeats in their last five games. In that time, they have lost Patrick Hickey to injury, Cian Byrne to parent club Bohemians, and top scorer Moses Dyer to Cambodian side Phnom Penh Crown. Padraig Amond of Waterford at full-time. Photograph: James Lawlor/Inpho There were encouraging goals for the inspirational Stephen Walsh and debutant Dara McGuinness, but these moments were fleeting. Waterford, led by Padraic Amond and the outstanding Conan Noonan, cut their opponents apart at times. Their opener in particular – a rasping drive from Noonan – was indicative of the slick, inventive build-up that made this look a comfortable outing. As the game wore on, Waterford didn't have to be so intricate. Amond's first goal came from a very simple long ball – his side could have scored two or three more in that vein if they were in a more clinical mood. There was an unfortunate own goal for Aaron Bolger, but it was the product of loose Galway defending from a deep free kick. Amond sealed the win with a late penalty, with Greg Cunningham somewhat harshly adjudged to have kicked through Tom Lonergan. Hickey will be a very welcome returnee for Galway soon, but their once comfortable gap to ninth-place Sligo Rovers has now been reduced to three points.

Derry City held to draw by Bohemians at Brandywell

Derry City stay third in the League of Ireland Premier Division table after a 1-1 draw with second placed Bohemians at Brandywell. Afolabi Akinyemi gave Derry City the lead in first half injury time, netting his first goal for the club to to mark his home debut in style. Bohs, who failed to create any clear cut chances in the first half equalised in the 52nd minute, Ross Tierney firing into the top corner of the net from close range. The result means Bohs stay second and are unbeaten in their last five league games but trail the league leaders Shamrock Rovers by seven points. Tiernan Lynch's side stay third, one point behind Bohs in second and eight behind Rovers. Derry fail to put their dominance on the scoreboard New Derry signing Afolabi Akinyemi proved to be real handful for the visiting defence and could have opened the scoring on 12 minutes but his effort was tame and easily gathered by Kacper Chorazka in the Bohs net. Akinyemi was at the heart of everything Derry created in the opening half and almost broke the deadlock five minutes before the break. The striker latched onto a long ball over the top and showed real pace to get away from his marker before swivelling inside the area, his effort went right across the face of goal only needing a touch. Akinyemi's efforts were finally rewarded five minutes into first half stoppage time, powerfully heading Brandon Fleming's cross from the left in at the near post to give Derry a well deserved lead. That lead could have been doubled from the next attack as Akinyemi combined with Liam Boyce to setup Sadou Diallo but his effort tailed wide of the target. Tierney secures vital point for Bohs Despite Derry's first half dominance, it was Bohs who started the second stanza sharpest. The home defence failed to deal with a long ball into the area allowing James Clarke to setup Tierney inside the area and the former Motherwell player fired the equaliser into the top right hand corner of the net, sending the 300 travelling fans into wild celebrations. Alan Reynolds side looked happy to leave Brandywell with the point as the held firm limiting the home attackers. In the closing minutes, Robbie Benson headed a Michael Duffy cross wide before substitute Danny Mullen fired an effort straight at Chorazka in the Bohs goal. Derry are back in action next Sunday when they go to Tallaght Stadium to face leaders Shamrock Rovers while Bohemians host Drogheda United on Friday.

Ross Tierney rescues draw for Bohemians away to Derry

League of Ireland: Derry City 1 (Akinyemi 45+5) Bohemians 1 (Tierney 52) Shamrock Rovers emerged the biggest winners at Brandywell as Bohemians came from behind to clinch a share of the spoils against Derry City . Former York City striker Dipo Akinyemi put Derry ahead on his Brandywell debut with a header from Michael Duffy's cross five minutes into first half stoppage time. That lead didn't last long as Ross Tierney blasted home from James Clarke's cross on 52 minutes to rescue a point for the second-placed Dubliners. Both teams have now played the same number of games as Rovers, who finished the night seven points clear of the Gypsies and eight ahead of Derry, who meet Stephen Bradley's side in Tallaght in their next outing. READ MORE There were reports of clashes between both sets of supporters outside the ground in ugly scenes which marred a match between two sides hoping to ignite a title race. But it was the Brandywell turf that ignited when a flare was thrown over the Southend Park stand during the first half, scorching the artificial surface and causing a lengthy delay in play. Play stops at the Brandwell after a flare is thrown onto the pitch. Photograph: Lorcan Doherty/Inpho Tiernan Lynch handed a debut to former Hull City fullback Brandon Fleming, who was one of three changes from last week's FAI Cup win over Treaty United. He replaced Shane Ferguson, while hat-trick hero Liam Boyce regained a starting berth at the expense of Gavin Whyte, who was a notable omission from the squad. Carl Winchester was also back at the expense of Adam O'Reilly, who dropped to the bench. Alan Reynolds made sweeping changes, seven in total from the team which thrashed their Leinster Senior League opposition Killester Donnycarney in the cup. Bohs were enjoying plenty of possession in the early stages but Derry almost capitalised on a quick counter attack on 12 minutes with a move started and finished by Akinyemi. The Londoner found the run of Duffy with a clever ball over the top and when the ex-Celtic winger cut it back to Liam Boyce the striker fluffed his lines. Akinyemi tried his luck again from distance two minutes later but Chorazka saved comfortably. The flare caused a five-minute delay on the half-hour mark, much to the annoyance of the players, but eventually the flame was extinguished and play resumed. Bohs carved out a great chance in stoppage time when Ross Tierney's delicate touch from Mounteny's cross set up James Clarke but his strike from 12 yards was saved by Maher. Derry broke when Liam Boyce played a ball over the top for Akinyemi to run on to and the striker got in behind the last man but his shot was saved brilliantly by the outstretched leg of Chorazka. The Polish goalkeeper couldn't do anything about Akinyemi's next effort on goal though, as the Englishman towered above his marker and headed Duffy's cross into the corner of the net for a timely breakthrough. Diallo tried his luck from just inside the penalty box with the last action of the half but drilled his effort wide of the post. Duffy's curling free-kick from 25 yards was gathered comfortably by Chorazka and substitute Adam O'Reilly fired a blistering effort over the bar as Derry tried to get back on top. Robbie Benson came agonisingly close to finding the corner of the net in front of a packed North Stand with a glancing header from Duffy's cross with 10 minutes to go. The second-half subs were making an impact and Danny Mullen raced on to a ball over the top of the Bohs defence but his effort on the half volley was beaten away by Chorazka at the near post. From the resultant corner kick Alex Bannon rose at the back post but again Chorazka parried it clear. It was as close as Derry came to finding a winner as the teams shared the spoils. Elsewhere, Sligo Rovers came from two goals down to clinch a 3-2 win over troubled Cork City at Turner's Cross, while Waterford defeated Galway United 4-2 on the road.
