Former West Virginia Black Bear makes MLB debut for Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (WBOY) — The Pittsburgh Pirates called up a fresh face Monday night who built his early career in Morgantown. The Associated Press reported Monday night that 25-year-old right-hander Braxton Ashcraft was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of a road matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Manager Don Kelly told the outlet prior to the game that Ashcraft would be working out in the bullpen with the team during the game. Ashcraft went into the game during the sixth inning to relieve Andrew Heaney, who gave up five runs. During his three innings on the mound, Ashcraft threw 50 pitches for 32 strikes, gave up two hits, one walk, no runs and recorded one strikeout. The Pirates lost 5-0. He spent the 2019 season in Morgantown playing for the West Virginia Black Bears, which were affiliated with the Pirates at that time, according to Baseball Reference. During that season, he put up a 1-9 record in 11 starts, the most of any single stint of his professional career. Since then, he's bounced around various other teams affiliated with the Pirates, slowly climbing the ladder. Going into Monday night, Ashcraft had played six games for Indianapolis, posting a 5.03 ERA in 10 starts. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
