Jacksonville Jaguars OTAs observations: With no Travis Etienne, can running game survive?
The Jacksonville Jaguars were back on the field of the Miller Electric Center for the fourth organized team activity practice on Tuesday, May 27. The team has reached the halfway mark for voluntary offseason workouts and will wrap up with the final four practices before conducting mandatory minicamp from June 10-12. Advertisement Quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a much cleaner practice than his first media available performance this offseason. He only tossed one interception, with safety Andrew Wingard making a good play on the ball during 7-on-7 competition. Two-Way Travis: Jaguars' Liam Coen reveals Travis Hunter spent time on defense during OTA No. 3 Lawrence almost connected with rookie Travis Hunter on a pass near the sideline, but Hunter couldn't hold on to the ball. It would've been a big-time play, with Hunter contorting his body mid-air to attempt to catch the ball. If he did hold on to the ball, he might've injured himself as the team isn't in padded gear and it would've been an awkward fall. Advertisement However, the play of the day came from a nice throw from Lawrence to tight end Brenton Strange. Strange snagged a pass along the sideline over the outstretched arms of defensive back Jarrian Jones. It was a good catch, but he also made sure to get both feet inbounds prior to his momentum carrying him out of bounds. Let's look at a few notable observations from OTA No. 4 for the Jacksonville Jaguars: Travis Etienne was absent from Jacksonville Jaguars OTA No. 4 Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (16) throws the ball to running back Travis Etienne Jr. (1) during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. Running back Travis Etienne was not present at the practice. According to head coach Liam Coen, he had travel issues after the holiday weekend. Advertisement Etienne is entering the final year of his deal and the Jaguars drafted two running backs in April's NFL Draft. He could find himself traded prior to the season, but OTA 4 showed why that might be a risky proposition. The Jaguars are largely inexperienced in the room. Etienne is a lead back, recording more than 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons playing. The next closest player on the roster would be third-year back Tank Bigsby, who has been inconsistent. Then there's three backs who have little to no experience in the NFL. Jacksonville Jaguars running back LeQuint Allen (36), right, runs sprints during the fourth organized team activity at the Miller Electric Center in Jacksonville, Fla. Tuesday, May 27, 2025. [Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union] There's Keilan Robinson, who missed most of his rookie season due to injury. Then there's rookies Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen, who haven't stood out in the small window to view them. Advertisement Without Etienne, what's the confidence that the rushing attack can be a viable option to relieve Lawrence? Especially with how much Coen likes to run the football. Something to think about. Travis Hunter practices with the offense again, Liam Coen reveals he's already practiced with the defense Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Travis Hunter (12) catches a pass during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. Travis Hunter was back after his busy weekend, getting married on Saturday and going viral for surprising a young football player on Monday. Hunter was practicing as a member of the offense again, though, Coen revealed he did practice with the defense during OTA No. 3. As we said in our observations last week, there's a method behind Jacksonville's plan with Hunter. He's still a very raw player and needs as many reps on offense he can get. The time spent this summer learning offense will pay dividends for the team during the regular season. Advertisement OTA No. 4 wasn't notable for the rookie. However, we'll still keep an eye on him throughout the duration of offseason workouts and into training camp. Cam Camper makes impressive catch during 11-on-11 action Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Cam Camper (17) catches a pass during the first organized team activity at Miller Electric Center Monday, May 19, 2025 in Jacksonville, Fla. The Jaguars are finally in Phase III of the offseason, so they're able to do offense vs. defense drills. During OTA No. 1, the defense was noticeably ahead of Jacksonville's offense. It seems the offense made up some ground this week. We already mentioned the catch made by Strange, but it wasn't the only nice play made by Jacksonville's offense. During 11-on-11 drills, undrafted free agent wide receiver Cam Camper scored a touchdown. He blazed down the field and made a fingertip grab as Doneiko Slaughter and Rayuan Lane collided. With the two defenders wiped out, Camper trotted to the end zone. Coen referenced the catch after practice while discussing some of the younger receivers who are competing for roster spots. Advertisement He illustrated how difficult it is for young players to catch on post-draft as they are taking in so much information that most veteran players have had for more than a month prior to the draft. The wide receiver position, especially, will be one to monitor as guys compete for spots behind Jacksonville's top players. Brenton Strange shows confidence as the Jacksonville Jaguars count on him to deliver big in 2025
(Image via Getty: Brenton Strange) The Jacksonville Jaguars enter the 2025 NFL season ready to move on and start anew. The Jacksonville Jaguars had quite the offseason, as they not only ushered in a new head coach in Liam Coen, but they also acquired a ton of young talent. The sensational Travis Hunter joins the team in 2025 with expectations of playing as a key contributor and a spotlight name on the field. There is another major change with Brenton Strange stepping into a key role, as Evan Engram left the squad earlier this year, leaving Brenton Strange as the number one tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brenton Strange said he is ready for the opportunity to step up this season. Brenton Strange ready to fill big shoes in 2025 — ivenocarolus (@ivenocarolus) On May 24, 2025, Brenton Strange gave an interview to team reporter John Oehser, featured on the official Jacksonville Jaguars website, He confidently talked about how he was ready to step in as starting tight end. The Jacksonville Jaguars cut Evan Engram, a consistent tight end, earlier this year. That left Brenton Strange, a second-round NFL Draft pick in 2022, as the leading guy at tight end. Brenton Strange did not get up to much in his first season back in 2022, catching just five passes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo But he showed real progress in 2024 with 40 catches for 411 yards. That improvement was enough to earn the respect and trust of the coaching staff. 'I'm definitely ready for it,' Strange told Oehser. 'I believe in myself. I feel like I bring something special to the field every time I step out there.' Liam Coen brings a fresh system to Jacksonville Jaguars Liam Coen enters his first season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025 after one year as an offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cade Otton is the tight end Liam Coen coached in 2024, and who caught 59 passes that year. Now, Liam Coen wants to bring the same kind of production to the Jacksonville Jaguars. If Brenton Strange's statistical output is comparable to Cade Otton's, that could be a massive boost for the offense. With Liam Coen running the plays and Travis Hunter adding spark, the Jacksonville Jaguars have high hopes. Preseason training will kick off in late July 2025 in Jacksonville, Florida. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Let's go to the last guy here on our list, which is Brenton Strange, the tight end, which I mean, I had to look this up when when look at the outline, like Brent Strange is the consensus tight end 27. Advertisement What are we talking about here? Since, since we did that, he's actually moved up to 24. 0, big whoop. Um, I don't know, uh, Strange did did bang me in the fantasy playoffs last year, Dalton, uh, when I tried to use him after he had that one big week did not work out for me, um, but you're saying let that go and uh be pretty in on Bretton Strange this year. Yeah, I don't know if he's gonna come through like the Johnny Smith uh late tight end call that you laughed at me last year, but, uh, Strange is in a pretty good position here to emerge. Huge fantasy boost with Evan Ingram moving on to Denver. Ingram owned the 3rd highest target share among tight ends last year. Advertisement Yes, Travis Hunter enters the picture, but Christian Kirk is also gone. Uh, just to repeat, Jacksonville has a bunch of vacated targets available. Uh, Liam Cohen offense, um, Strange will be more developed as, as those potential rookies we talked about earlier in his 3rd year in the league. Strange started over a 21-year-old Tyler Warren at Penn State, and I think he's going to be 3rd in the target pecking order on a much improved Jacksonville offense. So yes, we're talking about the number 15 tight end here to end it, but I think Strange is a sleepy sleeper if you're looking for a late tight end flyer. Advertisement Oh yeah, he's the right, he's the right bet to make. 3rd year tight end, 91st percentile broad jump, 82nd percentile vertical jump, uh, 87th percentile, 10 yard split, according to mock draftables Brent and Strange. Like, this is the right type of athlete you want to bet on at the tight end position. And I mean, the rest of the guys on the depth chart, uh, it's, you know, Johnny Munt, who follows this coaching staff around when it's like, OK, we want to get in 12 personnel. We bring Johnny Munt on the field. Hunter Long, honestly, same thing, same thing. He's that exact type of guy. So there's really no reason why Brent Strange shouldn't be the leading tight end, um, target getter for whatever that's worth. Advertisement Like, again, we're already asking a Trevor Lawrence offense to support Brian Thomas Junior as a top 10 wide receiver, a wide receiver won in fantasy, and Travis Hunter to hopefully outkick that wide receiver 3080P. So it's not as if I don't know, it's not as if Strange has the, the highest upside in the world, but if Trevor Lawrence takes a leap, if Liam Cohen brings everything that he did from Tampa Bay to Jacksonville, and again, this is the right athletic profile to bet on, I could certainly see, uh, Brent Strange being like the tight end sleeper to draft in 2025.
