Delhi woman killed, 8 injured in car collision on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

A 21-year-old IGNOU student from Delhi was killed and eight others, including three members of her family, were critically injured when a speeding Brezza crashed into their Datsun Go on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Ferozepur Jhirka, Nuh, while attempting to catch up with a second car ahead, police said on Friday. The deceased was identified as Nitika Kumari, a resident of Shakurpur in north Delhi. The five occupants of the Brezza were members of another family. The accident took place between 4pm and 4.10pm on Wednesday. 'Nitika, her sister Himani(25), brother Vishesh (16), and their uncle Sanjay Mandawat (45), were returning after dropping an elderly relative at their village Rajpur in Alwar, Rajasthan. Mandawat had slowed down his car along the expressway as Nitika was feeling nausea due to motion sickness. It was at this moment that the Brezza rear-ended their car,' said Ombir Singh, station house officer of Ferozepur Jhirka police station. Police said that those in the Brezza were from Tri Nagar in north Delhi and were returning after offering prayers at Mehendipur Balaji temple in Rajasthan in two separate cars, one of which was the Brezza. One car had moved ahead and the Brezza was speeding to catch up to it, which resulted in the severe crash. The Brezza was clocking nearly 130-140km/hr, and after the collision it flipped multiple times on the expressway. 'After the collision, the Datsun rammed the crash barrier, critically injuring Nitika because she had unfastened the seat belt to freshen herself with water,' Singh added. Within five minutes of the crash, those travelling in the second car arrived on the scene to help their relatives in the Brezza, police said. 'A commuter stopped and loaded the bleeding Nitika into his vehicle along with the other injured persons of her family and rushed them to the subdivisional hospital, Mandi Khera. Doctors declared her dead and alerted us. Those in the second car also brought the five injured in the Brezza to Mandi Khera hospital from where they were referred to a higher centre for better treatment,' SHO Singh added. Police did not identify those injured in the Brezza. There were four women and a man inside the Brezza. Police said that the Brezza driver will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital. Based on a complaint from Mandawat, a first information report was registered against the Brezza driver at Ferozepur Jhirka police station on Wednesday night under sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Nitika's body was handed over to her family after an autopsy on Thursday, police said. Meanwhile, Mandawat, a lawyer practising at the Rohini court, said his 91-year-old uncle Gyarsi Ram had reached Delhi for a short stay. 'We had gone to drop him to Alwar. While returing, Nitika complainted of dizziness due to motion sickness and was vomiting,' he said. Mandawat said he puchased lemonade and water and gave it to her. 'I slowed down the car along the crash barriers and opened the windows when the Brezza rammed us,' he said. 'Nitika and Himani were on the rear seat and were not wearing seat belts. Somehow Nitika sustained a severe head injury as she was peeping out of the window to vomit and died on the way to the hospital,' he said 'There was no cooling facility at the government mortuary to preserve her body for an autopsy, so we arranged ice blocks for the purpose,' he said.

It will likely fill the gap between the Brezza and the Grand Vitara in Maruti's lineup and will be available at Arena dealerships. Rumours suggest, originally Maruti Suzuki had planned to develop a new internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV that would be a 3-row, 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara. Test vehicles have been spotted on the roads, but the 7-seater version would have competed with vehicles such as the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus, and Mahindra. The Escudo will share the Global-C platform with the Grand Vitara but will be slightly longer, likely providing more space in the cabin and simultaneously more boot space than both the Grand Vitara (373 liters) and the Creta (433 liters). In terms of engine options, the Escudo is expected to feature a 1.5-liter petrol engine delivering 101.65 hp and 139 Nm of torque, a CNG option providing 86.79 hp, and a strong hybrid variant with a total output of 113.97 hp. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic, and an e-CVT for hybrids, with choices for both 2WD and 4WD (Suzuki AllGrip). The Escudo is expected to be priced lower than its competitors, with some variants positioned as cost-effective alternatives to the Creta and Seltos. Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Las Vegas — May 16

It's the most pressing question of the weekend: 'Where should I eat?' Here, Eater editors issue tried and true recommendations for places to check out this weekend. For late-night conversation: Peppermill and Fireside Lounge The Peppermill and Fireside Lounge is certifiably a classic — the James Beard Foundation even named it one of its 2024 America's Classics Award winners. More than 53 years after opening on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, it still delivers all the neon-soaked, maximalist-diner charm: faux cherry blossom trees, cords of purple light, and generous plates of French toast ambrosia buried under fruit cocktail. Stop by for gravy-smothered Southern-fried steak at dinner, or swing through on the weekend in the wee hours for fishbowl cocktails and a round of appetizers. While the Peppermill proper draws the crowds, its adjacent Fireside Lounge tends to fly under the radar — which, thankfully, usually means no wait. On a recent weekend, I lucked out with open seating in the sunken conversation pit, wrapped around a glowing fire-and-water feature that's pure '70s Vegas. Drinks are gleefully oversized and over-garnished — like a chocolate-banana spin on a mudslide or an icy strawberry daiquiri. The lounge menu sticks to appetizers, but the sampler platter — coconut shrimp, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and bruschetta — could have fed the whole pit. 2985 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89109. — Janna Karel, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest For mid-morning Mediterranean fare: Cafe Landwer More than 100 years after starting as a small coffee roasting facility in Berlin, Germany in 1919, Cafe Landwer has expanded to Las Vegas. In a bright and airy space in the Boca Park shopping center, Cafe Landwer does coffee and casual Mediterranean food to impressive effect. I often like to cowork with friends at a restaurant or coffee shop once or twice during the week. A recent visit to Cafe Landwer was just right for a deadline-addled midweek change of scenery. I ordered a Belgian waffle that came as a platter heaping with thick waffles, bowls of Nutella and fresh whipped cream, and sliced strawberries and bananas. On repeat visits — ideally on slow and sleepy weekend mornings — I will again order the mezze platter. Four incredibly soft and fluffy pita pockets come poised for dipping and spreading with pleasantly earthy hummus, smoky baba ghanoush, tangy matbucha, and cool labneh sprinkled with za'atar spices. Warm spring days call if icy mint yes, the Dubai chocolate trend lives here too — croissants half-dipped in glossy chocolate, filled with pistachio cream and scattered with crispy shards of feuilletine. 8704 West Charleston Boulevard, Suite 101, Las Vegas, NV 89117. — Janna Karel, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest For an easy Italian-inflected brunch without the need for a reservation: Brezza What exactly is Brezza? For the evenings, it's kind of an Italian-style steakhouse with a full line of wood-grilled proteins, but during the day, the Resorts World restaurant becomes a reasonable pizza-and-pasta spot with snacky salumi boards, chopped salad, and a burger. And yet, it's typically not very busy, which means the restaurant works as a solid brunch destination without the need for a reservation. On a visit earlier this year, we took down a few of its Roman pinsa-style pizzas that are great for sharing, topped with sausage and pepperonata peppers or prosciutto and ricotta. Lumache bolognese would've been more soporific if we didn't wash down lunch with ample iced tea and Diet Cokes, but this hearty meat pasta was quite delicious. The best part is that brunch is simply unfussy, which is always the best way to approach the weekend meal at a time when too many of them are over-the-top. 3000 South Las Vegas Boulevard, Las Vegas, NV 89109. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest Sign up for our newsletter.
