BBL: Melbourne Stars make important signing ahead of the 2025-26 season

The 'proven wicket-taker' is back. Experienced seamer Mark Steketee has penned a one-season extension with the Melbourne Stars ahead of the 2025-26 season. Steketee has captured 104 Big Bash wickets at an average of 23 across his 78 appearances with the Stars and Brisbane Heat. Stars high performance manager, and ex-Australian quick, Clint McKay said Steketee was an important piece of the Stars' fast-bowling stocks. 'Full credit to Mark, he worked his way into the tournament and then capitalised on his opportunity in the attack,' McKay said. 'He is a proven wicket-taker in the BBL and a fierce competitor and hopefully he can take the momentum and belief from last season into this year. 'We're really pleased with our fast-bowling stocks with Mark complementing Peter Siddle, Tom Curran, Scott Boland and Liam Hatcher.' Steketee said the Stars set the benchmark for the upcoming season with their red-hot run to the finals last campaign. 'I've loved my last couple of years at the Stars and the MCG is an amazing place to play when you're on a roll like the team was last year,' Steketee said. 'Hopefully, the boys can keep that momentum going and get back to the finals again in BBL|15.'

Labuschagne was under increasing pressure over the Australian summer while he produced some questionable performances. At the start of this month he received his Australian contract, but there have been calls for him to make way for teenage sensation Sam Konstas (who was rewarded with his first Cricket Australia contract). 'I found it interesting that it was written (that) Sam Konstas getting a contract puts Marnus' career on edge,' cricket great Ian Healy said at the time. 'I don't understand that. 'They're in different batting positions in the order and I don't see the connection. 'Marnus just needs to knock out a few more runs and keep going.'

Gardner ruled out of T20 series

Brisbane Heat and Queensland all-rounder Charli Knott has been called into Australia's T20 women's squad for the rest of its tour of New Zealand as a replacement for the injured Ashleigh Gardner. Scans have confirmed that Gardner broke her finger in attempting to take a catch off her own bowling in Australia's eight-wicket win over the White Ferns in Auckland on Friday in the first game of a three-match series. The uncapped Knott, an Australia 'A' representative, was due to link with the squad on Saturday ahead of Sunday's second match of the series in Tauranga. She has been rewarded for her good white-ball form with bat and ball in the 2024-25 Women's National Cricket League season. Knott scored 542 runs for Queensland at an average of 54.2, and took 12 wickets with her off-spinners at an average of 28.66. Gardner's place in Australia's 11 for Sunday's game is reportedly set to filled by leg-spinner Alana King.
