Wrexham edge nearer to transfer breakthrough as £7m star's move announced
Ipswich's signing of Chuba Akpom may revive Wrexham's club record £7.5million move for Nathan Broadhead, with more transfers expected by Phil Parkinson before deadline day Wrexham's bid to sign Nathan Broadhead could be back on track after Ipswich Town took action to bolster their attacking options. The Tractor Boys announced the arrival of Ajax striker Chuba Akpom on Sunday as part of an initial season-long loan deal, beating rivals Birmingham City and Middlesbrough to secure his services. Ipswich will have an obligation to buy the 29-year-old for £7million if they gain promotion to the Premier League this season, according to Sky Sports. The successful swoop for Akpom could provide a boost to Championship new boys Wrexham 's hopes of acquiring Ipswich forward Broadhead. The Red Dragons, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were previously reported to have reached an agreement to purchase the Wales international for a club record fee of £7.5m. However, the 27-year-old's move was later placed on hold by Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna amid injuries to other attacking players and transfer interest in Omari Hutchinson from several Premier League sides. The Northern Irishman admitted last week that Broadhead had expressed a desire to leave, but said he would not sanction his departure unless the Tractor Boys were able to add new recruits up front. He later featured as a second-half substitute during Ipswich's 1-1 draw at Birmingham in their opening Championship fixture on Friday. Broadhead's inclusion in the matchday squad raised doubts over whether his switch to Wrexham would materialise. But McKenna offered a clue about the potential knock-on effect of Akpom's arrival during a post-match interview. He indicated Ipswich had more business to do in the transfer market to be considered contenders for automatic promotion, with players likely moving both in and out of the club before the window closes on September 1. "We've got work to do with the group on the training pitch," McKenna told Sky Sports."It's a short turnaround between Premier League and the Championship. It's still been a short pre-season, so we've got work to do on the training ground. "We've got new players to integrate, and to still get up to full speed. We know we've got some incomings and outgoings that we need to resolve. Our squad needs to be stronger if we want to consider ourselves one of the top teams in the division." Wrexham kicked off their first Championship campaign in 43 years on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat at Southampton. Phil Parkinson's team took the lead in the first half after Josh Windass converted a penalty, but were beaten in dramatic fashion as Ryan Manning and Jack Stephens grabbed two late goals for the Saints. The former Bolton manager has already signed eight new players this summer after securing promotion from League One in April. However, Parkinson indicated that he was keen to add to his squad further after the loss at St. Mary's. When asked if he wanted more fresh faces, Parkinson said: "Without a doubt - we're working towards that. We want to keep strengthening the squad so it's competitive enough to give us a chance in this division. We're bringing players in to help the existing players." As well as Broadhead, Wrexham have also been linked with a bid to sign Sheffield United defender Jack Robinson in a permanent deal. Loan moves for Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas and Wolves' right-wing back Pedro Lima are also reported to be in the offing. Sign up to our newsletter! Broadhead's Wrexham AFC move looks to be a step nearer
Welsh international forward Broadhead has been linked with the Reds for the past two weeks and came off the bench to play 22 minutes in The Tractor Boys' 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in Friday's Championship opener. Reds boss Phil Parkinson has openly admitted he's still looking to add to his ranks and Broadhead seems to be the number one target. Bangor-born Broadhead, 27, was on Wrexham's books as a youngster before moving to Everton for whom Ipswich paid £1.5m for him in 2023. On joining Ipswich, Akpom told the club website: 'I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I'm delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions. 'I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.'

Wrexham eye up new target as £7.5m record transfer deal in danger of falling through
Wrexham have made a club-record bid for Ipswich Town winger Nathan Broadhead as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the Championship season, but have a back-up plan just in case Wrexham might resort to a familiar face if their club-record £7.5million deal for Nathan Broadhead falls through. The Red Dragons have splashed the cash in the summer transfer window following their promotion from League One last season, with their total spending reportedly hitting eight figures. Manager Phil Parkinson has been backed heavily by Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, bringing in eight new faces so far. The former Bolton boss said this week that more signings could be on the cards as he aims to assemble a squad capable of holding its own in the Championship. The acquisition of a ninth player is on the cards as Wrexham chase Ipswich Town winger Broadhead, who began his football journey in the North Wales team's academy. If the move for the Welsh international gets the go-ahead, it would mark the third time Wrexham have broken their transfer record in the current window. READ MORE: Managing Wrexham as Ryan Reynolds smashes club transfer record and lands Ajax star Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna conceded this week that Broadhead has expressed a wish to move on. However, he was adamant that he wouldn't let the 27-year-old leave unless Ipswich's thin attacking ranks were bolstered. While Wrexham are willing to bide their time in their pursuit of Broadhead, reports suggest they do have a contingency plan should the deal fall through. As per the Daily Mail, Barnsley 's Davis Keillor-Dunn has caught the eye of Parkinson as a possible substitute. The forward shone in League One last season, bagging 18 goals and dishing out five assists, and had a stint with Wrexham in the National League back in 2020. Keillor-Dunn could be a more budget-friendly choice than Broadhead, with the Barnsley Chronicle claiming that he could be available for £5m. How long Wrexham are prepared to wait for a resolution on Broadhead's situation is still up in the air, but Ipswich manager McKenna recognised the player's eagerness to move during a press briefing on Wednesday. The former Manchester United coach said: "(There's) no update from what I said last week, really, with Nathan. He's expressed his desire to look at another opportunity that's been presented to him. "But at this moment with the position the club is in, it's not the right time or even a possible time for us to allow a good player to leave the building. We'll have to see how the situation plays out over the coming weeks." In response to queries about whether Broadhead will play in Ipswich's first Championship match against Birmingham on Friday night, he said: "He's been training and we're short in those positions. "He's missed some of the pre-season minutes, so he hasn't played quite as much, but he's in our plans for the weekend and there's every chance that we'll need a strong contribution from him." Broadhead has emerged as a prime target for Wrexham as they seek to wrap up their transfer dealings before the window shuts on September 1. The forward joined the Tractor Boys from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023 and played a crucial role in their remarkable consecutive promotions from League One and the Championship. During his stint at Ipswich, he has found the net 23 times in 83 outings, though he was restricted to merely seven Premier League starts last season. With Wrexham's pursuit of Broadhead still uncertain, Parkinson has acknowledged that his summer shopping spree remains incomplete. "I don't think we are there yet where we need to be," he told The Leader. "We have made quite a few signings but we still feel we need to add in a few areas. We have been close to a couple of deals and then they didn't happen for whatever reason but we are working on a few things. "We know the kind of template where we want the squad to look when we finish and we are working towards that. Sometimes patience is a virtue with these things." Wrexham's plan B if record-breaking £7.5m transfer collapses with manager holding up deal
Wrexham's plan B if record-breaking £7.5m transfer collapses with manager holding up deal Wrexham may target a move for a former player if their record-breaking £7.5million move for Nathan Broadhead falls through, as they continue building for the Championship Wrexham co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds face a dilemma over their main summer transfer target (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images) Wrexham could turn to a familiar face if their club-record-breaking £7.5million deal for Nathan Broadhead falls through. The Red Dragons have spent big in the summer transfer window after being promoted from League One last season, with their total estimated outlay reaching an eight-figure sum. Manager Phil Parkinson has received significant funding from Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, bringing in eight new players to date. The former Bolton boss revealed this week that there could be more arrivals as well as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Championship. The purchase of a ninth player is on the horizon as Wrexham pursue a move for Broadhead, the Ipswich Town winger who started his career in the North Wales team's academy. If the deal for the Wales international receives the green light, it would see them break their transfer record for the third time during the current window. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna admitted this week that Broadhead has expressed a desire to leave. However, he insisted he would not sanction the 27-year-old's departure unless the Tractor Boys' scarce attacking options are improved. While Wrexham are prepared to be patient in their pursuit of Broadhead, it's now being reported that they do have a back-up plan if the move collapses. According to the Daily Mail, Barnsley's Davis Keillor-Dunn is being eyed by Parkinson as a potential alternative. The forward was one of the standout performers in League One last term, scoring 18 goals and providing five assists, and previously had a brief spell with Wrexham in the National League in 2020. It remains unclear how long Wrexham are willing to wait for Broadhead's future to be decided, but Ipswich boss McKenna acknowledged the player's preference to make the switch at a press conference on Wednesday. Ryan Reynolds' £7.5m target's dad drops huge hint on record Wrexham transfer going through
A Wrexham transfer target's dad appears to have hinted that a record £7.5m move is close with a cryptic post, sparking fan excitement as the club gears up for the Championship Nathan Broadhead's dad appears to have dropped a major hint that his son is about to complete a move to Wrexham in a club-record deal. The Red Dragons, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were reported to have tabled a £7.5million bid for the Ipswich Town forward last week. Broadhead, who was previously part of Wrexham's academy, joined the Tractor Boys from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023. He played a key role in Ipswich 's back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, before being restricted to just seven Premier League starts last season. Now in the final year of his contract at Portman Road, talks over the Wales international's proposed move were initially understood to be progressing well. The deal looked to have stalled at the weekend though due to injuries and transfer interest in other Ipswich attackers. However, the 27-year-old's dad, Mark Broadhead, has offered hope to Wrexham fans after sharing a cryptic post from his personal Facebook account. Simply captioned "12 years later," it shows an image of a young Nathan playing for Everton in 2013, followed by one of him celebrating a goal for Ipswich last year. The final picture, titled "Now," shows Nathan sporting a Wrexham shirt while kneeling on the pitch at the Racecourse Ground back in his academy days. While the deal has not been confirmed by either club, supporters have taken it as a sign that his return is imminent after a screengrab of the post was shared on X by the Fearless in Devotion fan account. One person replied: "That's all the info we need." While someone else posted: "As good as an official announcement, that." Another supporter wrote: "Someone may have just let it slip also outside the ground too." Ipswich fans also seemed convinced, with one adding: "You've got yourselves one hell of a player. Good luck this season." Broadhead has bagged 23 goals in 83 appearances for Ipswich in total and his arrival at Wrexham would be seen as a big coup. The Welsh side are preparing for their first campaign in the second tier for 43 years after securing promotion from League One in April. Manager Phil Parkinson has so far signed eight players this summer as he looks to improve his squad. Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore became the latest addition on Tuesday, joining on a three-year contract in a deal reportedly worth £2m. Wrexham face a tough start to the season as they travel to face relegated Southampton on Saturday in their opening game. Liberato Cacace is another new face who signed up last month from Italian outfit Empoli, and the left-back is looking forward to getting started. Explaining why he signed, he told the BBC: "There was interest in Italy, but for me, I'm a big football fan as well. I watch a lot of football and I've always watched English football, from the Premier League to the Championship so I know the level I'm heading into. "It was always a big dream of mine to play in the UK. Obviously Wrexham having so much publicity in the media as well you could see what the club was like. It's a very exciting project and I'm also very excited to start the season as well." He added: "I've already had chats with the players and with the manager and I think I'm settling in pretty well. I'm a professional person as well so I always like to keep fit. I'm going to use every day to make sure that against Southampton I'll be ready to go."
