Supercars Townsville: Brodie Kostecki back in winners' circle

Brodie Kostecki has taken Dick Johnson Racing back to the winners' circle after two winless years, taking out the 20th race in the 2025 Supercars championship on the streets of Townsville in Far North Queensland. Kostecki, who took his 16th career pole and his first since moving to DJR at the start of the season, beat Tickford Racing's Cam Waters away at the start of the race and was never headed, heading the Ford Mustang. Advertisement But he was chased hard by Waters, who cut what had been a 3.8-second deficit to Kostecki in half with a strong pitstop from the Tickford Racing team. But Kostecki rebuilt his lead and sped home to a 4.31s victory. 'I had Cam breathing down my back for the whole race so I knew I could not make any mistakes,' said the 2023 Supercars champion after his second podium finish of the season and ninth career win. 'Not great starts so far this year but we got that sorted out. To get the launch and control the race was great, it was a fast pace and this guy [Waters] was pushing 24/7.' Brodie Kostecki, Dick Johnson Racing Brodie Kostecki, Dick Johnson Racing 'A pretty good race, but we didn't have the pace for Brodie and his team,' said Waters after his 11th podium in Townsville. '[I am lacking] a bit of tyre life in certain areas, my car is not quite good enough.' Advertisement Former DJR driver Anton De Pasquale took third place for Team 18, after aggressively gaining two places in the opening tours of the 35-lap race distance to finish on the podium for the second race weekend in succession. 'A sprint race around here means you are not looking after the tyres as much as you might,' he said. 'You have to get it done early, I had to use [the tyre] as much as I could and use the strategy a bit. The car was good but it's not perfect every day.' Matt Payne took a strong fourth place in the Grove Racing Ford, ahead of Bryce Fullwood, who moved up from eighth on the grid in the Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet, and Chaz Mostert, from ninth in Walkinshaw Andretti United's Ford. Advertisement It was a challenging day for the Triple Eight drivers. Both Broc Feeney and Will Brown qualified outside the top 10, Feeney in 14th and Brown in 20th, the latter after tearing his rear wing off with a light crash at the end of the opening practice session. From there, both drivers fought hard to regain positions, Feeney finishing eighth and Brown gaining 10 places to make it home in 10th. As a result of the dramas at Triple Eight, Feeney saw the 183-point lead he brought to Townsville stay the same, but by finishing ahead of Brown, Payne has moved into second place for the first time. Feeney has 1519 points from Payne on 1336, with Brown now third on 1331. Waters has 298 ahead of Mostert (1047) and Kostecki (987). The Supercars and drivers will return to the Townsville tarmac on Saturday at 10:00am AET, for qualifying ahead of the 21st race of the championship. The Top 10 Shoot Out is set for 12:05pm, and the 70-lap race is due to start at 3:00pm. Supercars Townsville - Race 1 results To read more articles visit our website.

Supercars champion Kostecki gets 'money off the back'

2023 Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki has broken through for first win in a Ford since his dramatic switch from Erebus. Starting on pole in Townsville, Kostecki converted his qualifying dominance in the 35-lap sprint race to win for Shell V-Power Racing. It was the 20th race of the season, the first time Supercars have raced on a Friday at the northern Queensland circuit. Kostecki's victory ended a five-race run by championship leader Broc Feeney, who drove superbly during the recent rounds in Perth and Darwin. The 27-year-old held off Ford rival Cam Waters and former Shell V-Power driver Anton De Pasquale. 'That felt awesome,' Kostecki said. 'The Shell V-Power Mustang was on fire. 'I had Cam breathing down my neck the whole race so I knew you I couldn't make a mistake. 'An awesome feeling to get the monkey off the back, it's just absolutely unreal. I've been pretty fortunate to win some pretty cool races, but this feels real special. 'There's relief for the whole team. We've been putting in a lot of effort, everyone works really hard up and down the pit lane.' By winning, Kostecki may have just created a new superstition. 'We had a team lunch on Monday, and I joked and said 'if this works, we're going to do this every round. 'So we're going to get the spatula out, we're going to be cooking Wagyu burgers every Monday.' Defending champion Will Brown had a horrendous qualifying session, starting the race 20th. But he managed to make up 10 spots in the race in an important stint for his season. Feeney finished eighth. A 70-lap race will take place in Townsville on Saturday and Sunday.

Supercars Darwin: Barry Ryan's frank verdict on fall of Erebus

Don't miss out on the headlines from Motorsport. Followed categories will be added to My News. Erebus chief executive Barry Ryan has offered a frank reflection on a crippling 18 months that has seen his title-winning team slip to last in the Supercars standings. After a fairytale start to the Gen3 era, which saw Erebus win both the drivers' and teams' titles in 2023, the squad has endured a string of well-publicised internal struggles. Will Brown defected to Triple Eight at the end of 2023, while reigning champion Brodie Kostecki missed the start of the 2024 season while in dispute with the team, which coincided with big name sponsors such as Coca-Cola walking away. Kostecki would later return and win the Bathurst 1000, however left to Dick Johnson Racing at the end of last season – along with both Erebus race engineers George Commins and Tom Moore. Will Brown left Erebus at the end of 2023. Picture: Brendan Radke Brodie Kostecki was another high-profile departure. Team principal Brad Tremain also left the squad at the end of 2024 with plans to pursue an opportunity in IndyCar in the US. That has prompted a significant, and ongoing, internal rebuild, highlighted by Ryan himself needing to take the race engineer role on Jack Le Brocq's car. It's been tough going for Le Brocq and rookie teammate Cooper Murray, too, with Erebus slumping to last in the teams' standings ahead of this weekend's Darwin Triple Crown. 'There's no hiding behind it; the last 18 months have been really hard on our team. Really hard,' said Ryan at Hidden Valley on Friday. 'Losing key people … our last rebuild was 2021 and we got Brodie and Will and no one believed, really, in that. And we won a championship two years later, and we won Bathurst the year after. X SUBSCRIBER ONLY 'We've gone back to where we were [in 2021]. 'It's hard on the team. To replace people like George, Tom and Brodie is really hard. Brad Tremain is going to kick goals in America. That's four key people out of the team, it's really tough to replace that. 'It's going to take time. We can't hide behind that. I can only do so much and the boys that I've had there for six, seven years can only do so much. 'Unfortunately I'm still race engineering, and I say that because I shouldn't be. I should be running the business. But until we can get the right person to do that role; we're trying to self-promote from within, we're trying to find an engineer we can just put in and be really successful. Cooper Murray was 11th in the second practice session in Darwin. 'It's a balancing act and I can't say I'm really enjoying it. We got to a point where we were beating Triple Eight and we wanted to be that team that was the best year in, year out. 'Massive respect to Roland Dane for what he did for that whole time he was there, and what they're still doing. We got there and we just couldn't keep the momentum. 'No matter what everyone thinks the reason is why. We just couldn't keep that momentum that teams like that can do. 'Anyway, it's a lesson learned, this whole situation. We'll try not to go through it again. 'We'll get there again. We're confident in our team. We've got a great bunch of loyal staff that want to stay on and want to see us get there again and win championships and Bathursts. 'We're still going to go to Bathurst trying to win there this year. We'll have the belief and we'll have the drivers than can do it.' Erebus showed signs of improvement on track on Friday, with Murray 11th in the second practice session and Le Brocq in 19th as Andre Heimgartner led the way for Brad Jones Racing ahead of Ryan Wood and Will Brown.
