Contract secured, Courtland Sutton wants to help Broncos return to glory

Courtland Sutton spoke to media members on Tuesday after agreeing to a four-year contract extension with the Denver Broncos on Monday. First things, first, Sutton had a lengthy thank you list that included Jesus Christ, agent Jacob Presser, manager Daniel Gresham, Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner (and the entire ownership group), general manager George Paton, VP of football administration Rich Hurtado and head coach Sean Payton. "I'm just grateful," Sutton said. "I have a heart of gratitude for this opportunity, and I'm just grateful." Following Tuesday's practice, Payton said Sutton is "everything you want in a pro." "[H]e epitomizes what we're looking for," Payton said. "Then you match that with his play, and I mean just each box you're checking, leadership, work ethic. I'm excited for him and for the club." Sutton, 29, joined the Broncos in 2018, and he endured six losing seasons to begin his career. Last year, in Payton's second season, Denver had a breakthrough and returned to the playoffs for the first time since they won the Super Bowl following the 2015 season. Sutton now wants to help the franchise return to the NFL's mountaintop. 'It is legacy, being able to be here, signing the contract," Sutton said. "The biggest thing for me was being able to be here and bring back the years that Broncos fans have known. The organization has such a long historic tradition of being successful. You all know that I've been here through the thick and the thin. There's a lot of promise on the other side of the horizon here. To be able to be here and have more years of being able to chase greatness with this great team that we have, and with this great organization, that was one thing I was looking forward to. "We have the best fans in football. It's not a cliché thing to say. It's one thing that I believe wholeheartedly. I've played in almost every NFL stadium, and there's nothing like Empower Field [at Mile High] and being able to play in front of Broncos Country. I'm just grateful to be able to be here and continue my legacy here.' Sutton's 5,340 receiving yards rank 11th in franchise history, and he only needs 22 yards this fall to pass Emmanuel Sanders and crack the top 10. He's also just two touchdowns away from passing Eric Decker (33) on the team's all-time receiving TDs list. And although he's entering his eighth year in the NFL, Sutton believes he can still improve. "There's always growth that's able to be done," Sutton said. "I tell the young guys all the time, I'm always trying to find different ways to master and become better at my craft on and off the field. I'm a thief when it comes to finding different ways to be better, whether it's a recovery thing, whether it's watching film, whether it's a pre-practice thing, whether it's a post-practice thing. I'm always trying to find something to be better at whatever it is I can be better at. Complacency scares me, so to find different ways to step forward and continue to better myself, I'm trying to do that.' Now signed through the 2029 season, Sutton has five more years to continue improving in Denver. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Broncos host 4 linebackers for tryouts after 2 injuries at position

In addition to bringing in three wide receivers for workouts on Tuesday, the Denver Broncos also hosted four linebackers, according to the NFL's transaction wire. After losing Alex Singleton (thumb) and Drew Sanders (foot) in a three-day span, the Broncos took a look at linebackers Krys Barnes (27), Garret Wallow (26), Anthony Hines (26) and Jailin Walker (22). Barnes (6-2, 229 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA with the Green Bay Packers in 2020. He was a two-year starter in Green Bay before an injury derailed his third season. Barnes recorded 190 tackles, four pass breakups, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble in 35 games with the Packers. He spent the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, posting 90 tackles, six pass breakups, two sacks and one interception in 33 games. Wallow (6-2, 230 pounds) was picked by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of TCU. He spent the first two and a half years of his career in Houston, totaling 36 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup in 32 games (five starts). After being bumped down to the Texans' practice squad in 2023, he was signed by the Tennessee Titans to their active roster. He had six tackles in three appearances with the Titans to close out the year and then missed the 2024 season with a pectoral injury. Hines (6-3, 226 pounds) went undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2021 and signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a college free agent. He went on to have later stints with the Washington Football Team, Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets, but never appeared in a regular season game. Hines spent the last two years in the UFL with the DC Defenders, totaling 72 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles in 18 games. Walker (6-0, 219 pounds) is a rookie out of Indiana (and James Madison before that) who was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders in May. He was cut by the Raiders last week. Denver brought Walker in for a pre-draft visit earlier this year. At the time of publication, the Broncos have not made any signings. The healthy linebackers currently on the roster are Dre Greenlaw, Levelle Bailey, Justin Strnad and three undrafted free agent additions: Karene Reid, JB Brown and Jordan Turner. We'll see if Denver opts to add any more LBs to the squad. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

4 players who could get contract extensions next from Broncos

One down, four to go? The Denver Broncos signed wide receiver Courtland Sutton to a four-year contract extension on Monday, securing the receiver through the 2029 season. Broncos general manager George Paton might now turn his attention toward four other players scheduled to become free agents in 2026. Here's a quick list of the players who could be next on Paton's to-do list. Broncos contract extension candidates 1. DL Zach Allen: Allen (27) is coming off the best season of his career with 40 quarterback hits and 8.5 sacks. After earning second-team All-Pro honors last season, Allen is said to be seeking $25 million per season on his next contract. 2. OLB Nik Bonitto: Bonitto (25) earned his first career Pro Bowl nod and a second-team All-Pro selection after totaling 13.5 sacks and scoring two defensive touchdowns in 2024. He is now expected to start negotiations for a new deal at $23 million per year. 3. DL John Franklin-Myers: JFM (28) has made it abundantly clear on social media that he wants an extension sooner rather than later. Spotrac estimates JFM has a market value of $8.5 million, but the defensive lineman has hinted that estimate is too low. 4. DL Malcolm Roach: Roach (26) was dubbed perhaps the team's best free agent addition of 2024 by Paton, so he is clearly valued by the team's front office. Roach's contract will likely be more affordable than the three other players on this list, which might help his chances of getting an extension sooner. Stay tuned as we wait to see which player could get a deal next. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Did you know: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
