Broncos roster: S Talanoa Hufanga (No. 9) improves already-stout defense

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year safety Talanoa Hufanga, No. 9. Before the Broncos: Hufanga was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round (180th overall) of the 2021 NFL draft, and he was thrust into action almost immediately. Hufanga saw action in 15 of 17 games in 2021, starting three games, recording 32 tackles (24 solo, eight assisted), one tackle for loss and one QB hit. Hufanga's best season as a pro came in 2022 when he started 17 games, earning a Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro nod after netting four interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), two forced fumbles, nine pass deflections, two sacks, 97 total tackles (66 solo, 31 assisted) and five tackles for losses. In 2023 and 2024, Hufanga had his seasons cut short due to injury, although he managed to put together some strong stats in 2023. Before tearing his ACL in Week 11 of 2023, Hufanga collected three interceptions, three pass deflections, 52 total tackles (39 solo, 13 assisted), one tackle for loss and two QB hits. In 2024, Hufanga only started seven games, making 38 total tackles (20 solo, 18 assisted) and two tackles for loss before suffering various injuries that sidelined him on injured reserve. Broncos tenure: Hufanga departed the 49ers as an unrestricted free agent this spring, signing with the Broncos on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million. He is projected to start across from Brandon Jones in 2025. Chance to make the 53-man roster: Lock. The Broncos would not have brought in Hufanga, even with his injury-riddled history, if he were not going to be a starter. Hufanga will be a vital piece in a Denver defense that was near the top of the league in every defensive statistical category last year. Hufanga and fellow free agent signee Dre Greenlaw will help Denver's defense reach another level in 2025. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Surtain (6-2, 202) left college as one of the top cornerbacks in the nation. Broncos tenure: Denver used its first pick (ninth overall) to select Surtain in the 2021 NFL draft. He has been a star since Day 1, making PFWA's All-Rookie Team in 2021 before going on to earn Pro Bowl selections each year from 2022-2024. Surtain was named a first-team All-Pro in 2022 and 2024, winning Defensive Player of the Year last fall. Broncos roster: Evan Engram (No. 1) adds 'Joker' to offense

Broncos roster: Evan Engram (No. 1) adds 'Joker' to offense Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at ninth-year tight end Evan Engram, No. 1. Before the Broncos: Engram (6-3, 240 pounds) entered the league as a first-round pick out of Ole Miss with the New York Giants in 2017. He spent the first five years of his career in New York, hauling in 262 receptions for 2,828 yards and 16 touchdowns in 65 games. After a somewhat down year in 2021, Engram signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022. He then totaled 73 receptions for 766 yards and four scores in his first year in Jacksonville and was rewarded with a three-year extension. Engram had the best season of his career with the Jaguars in 2023, earning his second career Pro Bowl selection after totaling 114 receptions for 963 yards and four touchdowns. He was then limited to nine games in 2024 due to injury. Jacksonville cut Engram in March to save salary cap space. Broncos tenure: Denver coach Sean Payton spoke about adding a "Joker" to his offense this spring, and when Engram became available, it was clear that he was a perfect fit for the role. After signing a two-year deal in March, Engram will make his Bronco debut this fall. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Engram will make the team as Denver's No. 1 receiving threat at tight end. Engram will help Payton create mismatches in the offense's favor, and he'll likely emerge as a favorite target of second-year quarterback Bo Nix in 2025. Broncos cut 4 players after rookie minicamp

Broncos cut 4 players after rookie minicamp Denver Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton had a busy Monday. After hosting 33 players for tryouts over the weekend, the Broncos signed two of them: Michigan State inside linebacker Jordan Turner and Utah State wide receiver Kyrese White. Turner and White are both undrafted free agents. Denver also had four veteran players try out. Of those four, only tight end Cole Fotheringham was signed. The Broncos also brought back Zach Triner on Monday. Triner was cut last week to make room for the team's incoming rookies. With Mitchell Fraboni (back) still sidelined, Triner is expected to fill in for organized team activities later this month. To make room for Turner, White, Triner and Fotheringham on the 90-man offseason roster, Denver cut defensive back Kendall Bohler, defensive lineman Christian Dowell, tight end Thomas Yammin and inside linebacker K.J. Broncos sign 2 tryout players after rookie minicamp

Broncos sign 2 tryout players after rookie minicamp The Denver Broncos have signed two tryout players following rookie minicamp. The Broncos brought in four veteran players and 29 rookie tryout players over the weekend. Two of them impressed enough to earn a spot on the 90-man offseason roster. Denver signed Michigan State inside linebacker Jordan Turner and Utah State wide receiver Kyrese White, according to a report from KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. The Broncos are also bringing back long snapper Zach Triner, so the team will have to make three corresponding moves today to make room for the new additions. Turner (6-1, 231 pounds) spent four years at Wisconsin before transferring to the Spartans. He totaled 201 tackles, eight sacks, five interceptions, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 29 college starts. Turner earned two honorable mention All-Big Ten selections (one at Wisconsin and another at Michigan State). White (5-10, 185 pounds) spent three years at Utah before transferring to Utah State. He had a breakout season in 2024, totaling 44 receptions for 526 yards and three touchdowns. He also made an impact on special teams with eight kickoff returns for 188 yards and one blocked punt. White ran a 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds at the Aggies' pro day. Stay tuned as three more moves are on the way. We will track all of the team's transactions on Broncos Wire.
